What is it that makes you...YOU? Pixar Animation Studios' all-new feature film SOUL introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) - a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before - a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what's great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life's most important questions. Directed by Academy Award® winner Pete Docter ("Inside Out," "Up"), co-directed by Kemp Powers ("One Night in Miami"), written by Kemp Powers & Mike Jones, and produced by Academy Award nominee Dana Murray (Pixar short "Lou"), SOUL also stars the voice talents of Phylicia Rashad, Questlove and Daveed Diggs. It features original jazz music by globally renowned musician Jon Batiste, and Oscar® winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross ("The Social Network"), from Nine Inch Nails, composed an original score that drifts between the real and soul worlds.

A soul's purpose is to experience life. To invoke Alan Watts, "The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves."

I cried like a baby when I first saw it. It moved me in such a way that it made rethink alot of things, especially how I view life and how much of a gift it is. We sometimes forget with how hectic things can get sometimes. The reason it didn’t make much in the theaters is because it was supposed to Debut in theaters June 2020 but because of shutdown. Eventually they couldn’t push it back any longer and they released it Christmas Day on Disney plus for free so that is why it lost money. I wish I could’ve seen it in the theaters because the animation in this is gorgeous.

My favorite moment of this entire film is actually a callback. When we first see him in the diner eating alone, we see it as something sad and depressing. But later, when Joe is looking at all of 22's mementos, he starts thinking about his life and remembers how DELICIOUS that pie is. It's an uphill battle sometimes to hold on to that spark, so that callback is where the broken, open weeping started. This movie is beautiful. It made me feel all the things.

I think that might be one of my favorite parts too. I like to eat alone in restaurants sometimes because I love trying their food. From an outsider's perspective, it may look sad, but I'm having the time of my life delighting in one of life's simple pleasures. And what is life, if not for those simple pleasures?

I think it showed how much 22, in turn, impacted Joe! When we first saw him eat the pie, it was when Joe was obsessing over purpose and a meaning for living. After watching 22 run around *literally in his shoes…* we see him living as she was. Enjoying herself. Being in the moment. Experiencing the now. *He really went from eating to savoring pie~*

What happens inside 22’s mind at the end is so real because it illustrates what happens inside the minds of mental health issues. Agonizing over purpose, the sayings of others that get stuck in a loop and possibly different from what they actually said, the vivid imagery…all there. I love that this movie put the title card at the very end instead of the beginning sequences. That’s a unique thing. It packs a different punch.

I cannot recall if I cried during my first watch, but I DO remember how painful it was to witness that scene. Listening to the thousands, *millions* of mentors berate 22, watching her repeating, cycling their words out loud, and seeing the image of *Joe come down* on them both hurt me in the worst way; I had been coming to terms of being a college dropout when I first watched. My mom suggested we watch it together and I felt 22’s dilemma with the worst kind of understanding. I had spent most of the film *agonizing* over the difference between the spark and purpose. But that scene? It stole my attention and *forced me to immerse.*

I just must mention, that souls have their numbers- pretty big numbers, as we’ve seen in the beginning. And 22 is literally… 22. That means, there were only 21 living beings made before her, and she was first and only one, who stuck unborn for EONS. Literally for all history of humanity. It’s crazy…

+SunGunner At 9:12, Jerry scolds a new soul "37, that's enough!" So it appears that 22 isn't alone, and that there are probably countless other new (but really ANCIENT) souls who are just floating around and haven't been assigned to Earth for some reason. However, unlike 22, 37 is playful and doesn't seem at all cynical.

A dear friend of mine once said, "The purpose of life is to live." It really resonated with me. Life has no purpose except for the purpose we assign it. This movie really hits the nail on the head with this message by giving the protagonist what he wants, but not what he needs. Finding what we need may not always align with what we want, but finding a way to make those two align is a good purpose to attain.

I love the pie eating memory scene. It feels like he is super sad, obviously it is a core memory, perhaps that was when his dad passed away or yet another rejection from the music path. But that pie also gave him comfort, so it probably is also linked to him sharing a pie with his dad or maybe pie was what he at at the music bar when he fell in love with jazz. Either way it was a moment that made him enjoy life right at that moment in the present.

As a foreign student who came from somewhere with no subway, I completely enjoyed the experience almost every time, and got to see how Torontonians got frustrated at delays while for me, TTC was still a great system, compared to the one we have home... When I first saw this I was blown away: the colors, the imagination, the music, everything is just perfect! I feel like this is Disney/Pixar's magnum opus just from it's incredible poignancy and how it kind of lends a hand to everyone to LIVE, not just exist, but really LIVE A LIFE. The hedge fund manager's epiphany is what a lot of people don't end up having sadly. This movie is a beautiful and purposeful wake-up call for every one, young and old, to live life to the fullest. ❤❤❤❤

@nolongerwannadie3025 I'm sorry to hear that you are going through that, bipolar disorder sounds difficult to deal with you are right life isn't as simple as a pinar movie leads people to believe, but it's not about what literally happens in the movie it's about the meaning we get from it on a metaphorical level. Life is a roller coaster of good and bad. We are all different and encounter different personal problems whether it is mental or physical. I just want you to know that there is no such thing as normal. Nobody Has it easy in this world. Even rich people have problems. I hope you have a way of managing your problems in a way you can function. Hopefully one day there is an accurate explanation on the causes and solutions for all mental issues but if you ask me it's our environments and conditioning from what other people say to us that makes us sick. We often forget that we are just meant to experience this life feel the emotions and let them go. If our life leads somewhere exciting then that is a bonus. everything about this world iss mental the physical aspect is just an illusion that feels real. Be strong friend hope you can find balance. ☯️

I just watched this recently too. Like maybe two or three weeks ago. I related a lot with it. As someone whose work is completely unrelated to my passion, I appreciated how the movie conveyed that passion shouldn't be the only thing that defines what your purpose in life is gonna be. It's important to know the difference between the two. Because there would be times that you'll find out that you aren't actually good at your passion or if you are, there would always be someone better than you. And finding that out hurts a lot (in my experience, that is). Thank goodness I learned to appreciate the simple things everyday (not always, but I try). Having the smallest of things to be your reason to smile in one day is already part of your purpose in living. I hope everyone who reads this have a reason to smile everyday, no matter how small it is.

Joy doesn’t come guaranteed when you fulfill whatever your goals are. That’s our assumption, that our desire to live will come when we achieve our whatever. And that’s not how it works.

This movie needs to be talked about more... What an amazing impact it has, I swear it's stuck with me and actually influenced me more than any other film I've watched. Serious kudos to all the people that had a hand in making it, it opens up so many important conversations. I imagine their board room meetings were filled with many existential discussions 😂 Man, I'd type more but I'm busy second-hand tearing up after watching this reaction 💖

This movie was good. And I lost it when 22 felt the wind and everything. I am the person who would smile for a nice breeze or the warm sunshine...and felt like, I'm losing all of this joy and hope or interest, to a point, I did try to leave this world... That part reminds me of the pure feeling which I miss so much.

sometimes when it feels like all is lost, it’s enough just to feel the warmth of the sun, look at a beautiful sunrise, or enjoy the breeze swaying the trees. we don’t have to do something amazing, or make a spectacle of our life. it’s okay to dream big, but it’s also okay if those dreams don’t come true like you thought.

i liked this movie in the beginning, but the moment where it really started to grip me was when the concept of “lost souls” was introduced. i’ve been really obsessing over the things i haven’t been able to achieve lately so seeing a sad representation of that hit hard. the rest of the movie really touched me. i gotta rewatch it soon.

I haven't seen this movie since it came out on Disney+ and I'm watching this and got misty all over again. If a movie can keep striking an emotional cord in you, then it's a good movie 10 / 10. It's a real shame that this never made it to theaters because I was itching to see it there as well. Same goes for Turning Red. This movie is emotional to me because I was trying to be an animator for PIXAR but now I am in an office type of job. It was like PIXAR was telling me that it will all be ok.

Manholes are actually SUPER deep the more central you get to the city. They gradually go on a decline and manholes farthest away from the center are generally shallow, whilst the ones closer to the center can be EXTREMELY deep.
