In Disney and Pixar's ONWARD, two teenage elf brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot (voices of Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) get an unexpected opportunity to spend one more day with their late dad and embark on an extraordinary quest aboard Barley's epic van Guinevere. Like any good quest, their journey is filled with magic spells, cryptic maps, impossible obstacles, and unimaginable discoveries. My favorite thing about this movie is how Barley is so into magic but isn’t jealous when Ian becomes the “magical” brother. He’s always right there to encourage and support him. Ian was longing to have a male role-model in his Dad, but turns out he had one in his brother all along.

As someone who grew up without a father, and an older brother who immediately took the role of a caring male figure in my life, this movie made me sob like a baby at the end. It's not talked about enough, the older siblings who stepped up when our own parents couldn't. They deserve more recognition.

That line, when Ian tells his Brother, "No! You say goodbye." Broke me even worse than the scene when he realizes how his brother was there for him. That level of awareness that his brother needed that closure more than he did. Priceless.

As someone who nearly worships their older siblings, this movie really resonated with me and I wish I could give them back the parents that they themselves became for me

This one really does sneak up on you in the best possible way. Growth throughout the movie is thinking at the start that Barley is supper annoying and in your face, but then realising by the end that everything he was doing came from a place of just trying to love and support his family and his little brother as much as he could. He is an amazing brother and he really deserved that closure

This movie has you so distracted with the magic and the quest and bringing Dad back that you kinda don't notice what it's really doing... until it just gut punches you with Ian realizing he had a father figure in Barley. Barley who has always been there for him, never given up on him, and never been jealous of him. It was a pretty great film before, but that moment and the things that follow after elevated it to awesome.

Yes, the ending was sad, but this movie never was about the father. Their dad was already gone. It was all about the bond between two brothers.

First time I saw this movie, it destroyed me... My dad died when I was 13 years old, and the idea of this movie, of having your dad for 24 hrs made me cry like a baby (I'm 32 btw). That ending is just priceless.

I relate very heavily with Barley. When my stepdad was on his deathbed and on hospice, I couldn’t face him for more than a few minutes before running out. I left him a simple kiss on the head and “I love you”. I remember just looking at how different he was, how he wasn’t the Gary I knew for years. He was so thin and gasping for air, he was a stranger to me.

I know a lot of people were left wishing Ian had gotten to meet his father at the end of the story, but the whole point of this movie was that Ian didn't even realize he had an amazing male Role model growing up the entire time, he never noticed that Barley had, without needing to be asked, filled the shoes of their father the best he could even when he himself was a child always looking out for and helping his little brother who he loved so much. Ian realizes this and finds a new appreciation for his brother and gains closure in that way, because he never knew their father, so what he "missed" wasn't actually their father but rather, the idea of having one at all. Barley meanwhile did know their father growing up, and he had regret over never saying goodbye to him before he died which gave him the strength and motivation to never make that same mistake again and to always be brave. So Barley gets closure in the end by being given the chance to finally say goodbye :') I felt like the ending was perfect the way it was and though it was a little bittersweet, it tied things up really nicely.

Can I just say I appreciate very much that you have the very emotional reactions that you do. Often I want to share with people the things that inspire me and touch me and they just don't seem to share the feelings that I do. But you cry at movies the same way I do, and the way I wish I could share with more people in my life. I just want you to know that it's appreciated and special that you are unafraid to feel the way you feel and show it. That's important.
