Yup. It looks really lovely but I know I'll never get Apple TV+. I don't even know if we have it in my country yet; that _could_ theoretically mean that some other streaming site holds the rights in Finland (for example, there's no CBS All Access here so Star Trek: Discovery is on our Netflix) but it's more than likely that Apple is holding on to everything they have, so they have as much exclusive stuff as possible, which essentially kills every interesting project they fund. I saw it with my family and none of us were all that enthusiastic about it. It had some interesting ideas, but I feel like it borrowed too many elements from other animated projects. The whole "there's this hidden world that directly affects humans but they don't know about it" concept was done a lot better in Inside Out in my opinion. The world-building and rules were kind of hastily explained and left a lot of questions. I also found the idea of "sparks" kind of contrived. The human character designs were cool, but I hated the pastel-colored blobs they had in their soul-form. I get that the souls are supposed to be genderless manifestations, but they could have taken that to a more creative direction than essentially designing them as blue Minions. The body-swap thing worked because it tied to the story, but the concept itself is kind of cliched and overdone in animation. The break-up in the final act felt very forced. I also agree with Alex that 22 was kind of obnoxious. I think Soul's strongest aspects were the quieter moments and the music. Most of the comedy was pretty lame. Overall I'd give it a 6/10.
@richardsantanna53983 жыл бұрын
Show them Wolfwalkers instead. It's better anyway.
@nicklandgren71443 жыл бұрын
@@Angel_Investor_Music I agree, Soul’s main problem is that Inside Out is better. If Inside Out didn’t exist, Soul would be an instant classic. I didn’t have a problem with the blob form at all. The Jerrys were where the animation got creative, so it makes sense to complement that with a simple design. Yes, body swap is usually a terrible plot line for a movie, but here it works very well, and adds so much to the overall story (also, it never becomes too silly. On my first watch through, I was certain 22 would have to play at the concert in Joe’s body. I am so glad that they didn’t do that, because that is ‘cliche’) I think it was genius that despite 22 being so unlikeable, we still somehow cared for her throughout nearly the whole story (I mean, maybe you didn’t, but I was invested). That is quite a feat. My major problem with the film is Moonwind, as he is not only incredibly unfunny, but the more you think about it, the less sense it makes (also, much of the Soul World Exposition gets boring on rewatches). Still, I must give credit where credit is due: Soul is the first movie in a long time to make me cry happy tears. That scene where he remembers his past (moments important to him) somehow touched me deep inside, and made me consider my life in the context of everything. Especially after that shot of zoomed out NYC, with slow moving traffic. God, it’s so beautiful. Overall, I won’t give it a score out of 10, but I would rank it in the Top 10 Pixar films. Films that I think are better than Soul are: ToyStory, ToyStory 2, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Incredibles, Ratatouille, WALL E, ToyStory 3, Inside Out, (not sure about Coco, I will have to think about it more). All in all, Soul was the perfect ending to 2020, and the perfect way to close the Pixar 2010’s era. Also, this is Pixar’s first film where the main character is a middle aged normal man. Take a moment to digest that fact: It took Pixar 25 years (22 films) before they finally made a movie with a normal, middle aged man as the main character. Quite fascinating

Hope you keep uploading, every video is like a special occasion for me. Have a good one

I really liked the Eurovision movie. It felt like it came from a place of fun and love for Eurovision, which is more than I can say about what they did to replace ESC in 2020

As an Irish person im super proud of Wolfwalkers and Cartoon Saloon in general. When I saw them in and IHE thumbnail I could feel my chest puff out in defense, lol

Wolfwalkers is a fantastic film! Great to hear you talk about it. There are ways to see it outside of Apple tv like certain festivals, on some even for free in connection with talks about the movie.

Soul hit me deep. I play guitar and I have a hand injury which stops me playing to my fullest potential. It's ambiguous if it can be fixed, and I've tried different physical therapies with various results. I know it's not the same as Joe's journey, but trying to learn appreciation for other things in life is definitely something I struggle with. I like your videos at least, you "keep it real", so to speak

Idk, I think the extremely realistic skin and hair and stuff clashes with the cartoony artstyle in soul. It's kinda uncanny-valley for me, same with recent disney movies where all female characters have such huge freaky eyes

Well to each their own. I personally think it worked quite well, partly because the movement, lighting, and texturing worked really well in blending it in with its environment. So if you ask me, it feels like everything worked out quite well by the end.

I didn't mind 22 in Soul so much. I mean, I'm not much of those kind of comic relief side-kick characters much, either, but I thought the character ended up being important to the expression of the central themes, so. Anyway, Wolfwalkers is excellent!

Most of his stuff was always movies, quest for the best and search for the worst has been going on for a long time, he's involved with YMS and Ralphthemoviemaker talking about movies... sure he's did several videos on non-movie related stuff but this isn't new for him

As someone who has spent substantial time in Norway, Will Ferrel's accent was terrible and it hurt. Icelandic people don't sound like that. Some of the other actors were a bit better, but they really should have just made this movie with Icelandic actors and in Icelandic. I don't think it was right for an American audience.
@niksterkai43034 жыл бұрын
I agree. I liked the European diversity and they should have explored the cultures and languages more
@surgeland90844 жыл бұрын
@@niksterkai4303 Yeah, Americans are always afraid of subtitles I find. If we introduce them to the wonderful world of many languages, I think they'd be better off for it.
@magpineapple4 жыл бұрын
@@surgeland9084 tbh subtitles help me understand movies more and actually using the languages makes for a more interesting movie, but English speakers can turn off a great movie simply because of the language. My favorite foreign movie is The Intouchables
@surgeland90844 жыл бұрын
@@magpineapple C'est bien ce film! (Sorry, I'm a French speaker we can't help it lol) There are also a lot of great Indigenous films coming out in native languages. I really enjoyed The Edge of the Knife for that.
@AllyGatorAnimator3 жыл бұрын
Or they could have just gone the whole "Death of Stalin" route and not even bothered doing accents, which actually worked more towards the comedy of the film (not implying these two films are remotely comparable though lol). It personally didn't bother me how bad the accents were, the film wasn't taking itself remotely seriously and that felt like just another part of it. That said though, pretty sure they did dub some of the actors over during the singing parts with native singers, so it would have been possible to have actors from those countries.
