I'm from that guys who started learning bass just for fun and because I really like its sound and role, and you know, there are some people who can learn some tabs and play some covers (like I do) but what I recently found the most entertaining way to do with the instrument is to play along with the jams like yours. Believe or not, I'm lacking a lot of the music theory, but even playing the root notes in a time (which is quite challenging for me yet) is like the most fun I ever get with bass :D
