Thank you Lisa, your casts just keep getting better and better. I bought a copy of Elsie Davenports book in 1971 so it must have been when it was republished, I don't have it now. In those days I bought every book on spinning I could because I was teaching myself to spin and knew no one else who did. That was after I had assembled my kit set wheel from Ashfords. I also bought a drum carder at the time and still use it and have the original carton it came in.

Love your podcast! Just discovered it. I am a self taught spinner who has a Lindrum wheel. Have been considering getting a e-spinner for a little while. There are so many different ones. I do like the natural wood housing for the ashford e-spinner amongst other criteria. I, too, am in love with shetland wool. A few years ago I bought some from a shepherdess at the Black Sheep Gathering here in Oregon. Now I get fiber from her every year. I call it my desert island fiber. If I were on a desert island and could only spin one kind of fiber it would be shetland wool from Joyce's flock. I will look forward to watching your other podcasts. Thank you!

I have purchased an e-spinner, I have only used it once to ply what I spun on my Ashford traditional wheel. After watching your video, I will have a go at spinning on my electric wheel, I must admit I have felt apprehensive about spinning on it. Another wonderful episode Lisa. I appreciate the variety of interesting and thoughtful content. It’s my go to for Sunday morning tea and knitting. I took lessons to learn basic spinning probably 15 years ago but have not consistently worked in any of the fiber arts until the last year or so. Now I am deeply down the spinning, dyeing, weaving and knitting rabbit holes! Your really providing some great inspiration to hone my spinning skill. I am processing my first fleece - a Jacob- with a to spin it up to weave/knit a Hap shawl. Of course I have lots of fiber I can practice on in the meantime! Definitely look forward to hearing how you find the Davenport Spinning book. May have to add that to my wish list!

Jacob wool is a great choice. You should be able to get the gradient you want for your hap. I would love to hear about your progress on that project. I am really wanting to knit a hap made out of Shetland handspun. It is a rabbit hope indeed but one I was (am) happy to jump in 😀. It’s so nice to know we are keeping company on a Sunday morning ☕️ !

I have only one wheel and that is an Hanson e-spinner > I lpove it a lot > for the mobility and I spin outside a lot > just perfect ... No I do not think it is noisy . I only spin plant - based fibre and silk and sock-yarn ( linen Mix) ...for that it's ideal ...you need so much twist for plant fibre ....e-spinner makes it easy ...I have supported spindles as well ....but I use my Hanson plenty and it was the best buy I ever did ....bought it when I was still in Canada > so happy with it ... But Lisa you're spinning and wool prep. is amazing to watch ...I'm enjoying it .. I'm as well self -taught so any prof. input is beneficial for sure .

I love your podcast. You have such a calming way. I may even try and comb my cormo fleece. I have been putting it off because I don’t want to ruin it..ha ha. I too love akerworks bobbins. I like how you can see through the bobbin as you spin. I have a Hanson electric spinner and I love it. Originally I had a single treadle ash ford traditional which I sold because I couldn’t make it work. Maybe if I had a double treadle, it would have been easier. Be safe

hi Lisa, just finished watching the podcast as I finished knitting a quick fingerless mitten. As you have probably seen, I also have the ashford e-spinner which I now find myself using more as my main wheel. I tend to have it set at 12-1 or so and use headphones to listen to audiobooks whilst using it. Like any wheel, I have one bobbin that rattles around on it !You have reminded me to hunt out the spinning book that I bought whilst on Orkney a couple of years ago. It shows around 5 breed then tells how to spin the and gives a knitting pattern for each one. Must date back to the 60's maybe. I'll pop it on Insta when I find it. BTW, Love the small combs x

Yes, my e-spinner seems to works comfortably for me in that same range. It sure is fast. I’m going to make an effort to spin more on it. I am loving my little combs, so light and makes just the right amount of top for a quick spindle spin. I hope you’re having a good week 💕.

I like the E-spinner and am going to investigate. I have a wonderful Elizabeth II signature but have not been using it as it is really two big for my little house and I like to spin while I watch podcasts etc. The E-spinner looks like it would fit my space sooooo much better. Additionally I primarily make socks and from your video looks like that is a great option.

I really enjoyed & learned a lot from your demonstration of the e-spinner. I only have 2 very poor quality spindles that were given to me. I hope to have a Turkish and support spindle soon. After that, my goal is to have an e-spinner. Going with the e-spinner because I have hip and knee issues. I've had good success with the spindles I have. Made some decent yarn from wool and alpaca. Man, is that alpaca a pain!! It has a very short staple (1-1.5 inch). I've spun about 1/4 of a sock worth LOL. My pound of wool is all spun up & just needs it's bath and thwacking before it becomes something knitted. Love your channel ... keep it going!

I bought my Ashford E-Spinner 3 in December 2019 and I love it. I was actually using it while watching this! You made a really good point about the ease of achieving thinner fiber diameter with the E-Spinner that I hadn't considered. I'm currently spinning for a 3 ply sock yarn. I also love it for plying. My other wheel is a Schacht Sidekick which I also love.

I have the Ashford e spinner 3 and loving it. Also have the Matchless, that wheel also spinns so nice. Before the e spinner I had the Louet Victoria, but we were not a successful pair. What I love of the e spinner is that it is so relaxed, i find it quit silent despite the zooming noise. With the Victoria Iossed my mojo but it is back with the e spinner. Please understand me, the Victoria is a very good wheel , but I could not get used to it. It is all me. Thank you for your podcast.

Thank you for your beautiful podcast, Lisa. I have an e-spinner, The Device. They were made by Abby Franquemont and her husband, but they no longer make them. It is actually my first and so far only wheel; I was only using spindles before this spinner. I have had it several years. I bought it because I knew that within a few years (which has now passed) I would be retiring and my husband and I would be traveling for a few years in our RV, so I was looking for portability and a small size. Though COVID has delayed our leaving in the RV for the moment, we are still planning on departing maybe by the end of the summer, and The Device will be just perfect. I quite like it and so far can make any of the yarns that I want on it. I am not a fancy spinner, so I stick to the basics. I use Akerworks bobbins on it as well and quite like them. Currently I am combing a fleece from my sheep (that I no longer have): a BFLxFinnxCheviot wether. I am spinning it into sweater yarn. Cheers!

Hello I bought a new ESP2 from a shop. It came from their show room and was sold to a nice price. I need an e-spinner due to my health not for portability. First looked for all information for the e-spinner and I heard much about noise. Theretrfor I compared your spinner with mine. I noticed that mine got louder from the time I got it and I remembered that I didn´t oil it in the meantime. So I dropped some oil. Instantly it is quiet. I notice only something from the original nylon drive band. That should be changed to a waxed cotton band. I will try out. The louder noise Klock Klock which appears on high speed depends on the spool which has a clearance and should be treated with a feltplate in front of the spool. This information I got from KZbin. But the effect of a drop of oil is astonishing.

I have the first Eel Wheel Mini that came out thru a Kickstarter campaign in 2017, I was backer #202, so I was among the first to receive my spinner. It’s really cute! The footprint is no bigger than a paperback book. In fact I secure the spinner to a THICK paperback book to give it some weight and substance. I used it a bit when I first got it and loved it! But I haven’t been back to it. The maker has since upgraded and updated his models (I think he is on #6) my plan is to transport the spinner to our northwoods place as it’s permanent home so that I can choose to use it there when I am in the mood. I also plan to take one of my older wheels up there, too, but I’m sure that won’t happen for a few years.

Breeds vary so much. Fine wool breeds tend to have a shorter staple length but it is not a direct correlation. If you have library nearby, I highly recommend you checking out, 'The Fleece and Fiber Source Book', for tons of information and various breeds. Or check out this website for an over view of the categories. www.sheep101.info/201/breedselection.htm "Fine-wool sheep grow wool fibers with the smallest fiber diameter (usually less than 22 microns). Their fleeces tend to be shorter in length and contain the most lanolin (wool wax or grease). " Thanks for watching!

I’m watching you spin and have a question. When I’m spinning, if I don’t keep my left hand close to the fiber supply triangle I get twist going into the fiber. I have fibromyalgia and get a lot of pain in my fingers and wrist from pulling and tugging on the fiber. There are no fiber spinners anywhere around me, so I’m watching U-Tube and trying to learn. Any suggestions for me? I enjoy your videos very much. Thank you, in advance, for any suggestions you may have.

Make sure your prep is open and fluffy. You may need to draft faster or use a slower spinning spindle or ratio. It may be the twist is moving into the fiber too soon and locking up the wool. It’s difficult to diagnose the problem and I am by no means an expert. I’d check out a few KZbinrs to watch. Jillian Eve, Rachel from wool n spinning and Josefin Waltin are all good ones to start. I also made a drop spinning tutorial a while back. Good luck and I hope you find a comfortable way to spin. It should not be painful.

Great video! I have an Electric Eel Wheel Nano (the smallest e-spinner there is I think lol!), and I also own a regular Ashford Kiwi. Have you tried Woolery.com for a replacement spring? I know they carry a lot of spare parts for wheels and I was able to get a spring for my Kiwi a few months ago when I got a bunch of yarn caught and bent it up .

How do you spin so so thin on the drop spindle?? I have fiber with a long staple length but it wants to spin a thick no ply yarn.

How heavy is your spindle? I find a heavy spindle is great for thicker singles. You might try a very lightweight rim weighted spindle so you get lots of twist very fast. Do you spin thin on a wheel but not a spindle? Draft very fast and watch your drafting triangle, draft out fewer fibers, you’ll get thinner yarn. Happy spinning!

@@SoulfulSpinning I made my own Spindle out of a dowle and a cutting wheel for a grinder. The spindle is pretty heavy but I noticed the type of fiber makes a difference. I am so used to using my spinning wheel and I forgot how to use a drop spindle! :) I am honestly not very fast with my drafting, my spinning wheel has a slower ratio.

i've been spinning with the hansen craft espinner for the last 7 years... and i absolutely love it. it's nice and quiet and can go super fast. i have a louetS10 but never use it. i find i can spin tons of fibre in a shorter period of time with the espinner.... when you have a ton of fleece i find being able to spin huge amounts of fibre is so much more convenient with an espinner. if i want a quieter, slower, more mindful spin, i normally use one of my drop spindles. i do have a question for you, how do you count your yardage of spun yarn? have you tried any of those gadgets out there that counts it for you when you're skeining the yarn? i'm very tempted to try one of them. happy spinning. xo

I have heard such good things about the Hansen. It’s a very beautiful wheel and it sounds like it is quieter than my Ashford. It is amazing how much faster I can spin on the e-spinner though. In regard to you yardage counter question. I do not have any special gadget. I wish I did. When I want to count I lay the hank out and measure the length and count the strands. But in all honesty I do not usually count my yardage (gasp!). I do weigh it though and can get an estimate. Do you have any easy method?

@@SoulfulSpinning i count yardage the same way, measure and then count the strands... such a time sucker though. i've been looking into a skein winder with a yardage counter to make things easier. thanks for a fantastic podcast... you're one of the few spinning podcasts i love to watch.
