I know how it is. As a man who had very long hair for over 21 years until this year when I shaved it all off (I had been balding and it just wasn't the same any longer so I felt it was best to let it go), it was always a recurring nightmare for me that somebody would somehow restrain or incapacitate me and cut my hair. A lot of friends made jokes about doing that (I knew they were just kidding) but some certain relatives and friends of my parents didn't like it at all and kept telling my parents that they should discipline me more and force me to get it cut. Some relatives openly criticized me for having long hair, calling me a disgrace and that they wouldn't allow it (they couldn't do anything about it though because by that time I was over 6 feet tall and strong enough to defend myself). I hated them because they were showing intolerance towards my choice of individuality and that they wanted me to be like them. So I wasn't having any of it. This was the way, especially as a heavy metal rocker, I wanted to present myself and how I wanted others to see me whether they liked it or not. Ultimately I had to let my hair go because it had gotten very thin and stringy in the midst of an already invading prominent bald patch and it looked awful. It wasn't easy to do that at first but it was the right thing to do and I have no regrets, now embracing the bald look. But I will always remember my big-haired years and they'll always be a part of me. Embrace what makes you guys you and don't be afraid to be individual and original.

I feel sad that that beautiful kid just got stepped over by a cruel bully, but also enraged at that bully. I may not agree with the kids style. Usually people ask when that one person that usually cuts their hair is going to be back or they end up looking "a little" messed up. It's not necessarily a race thing but an issue of knowledge and skills. One time my exhusband and i went to a barber shop. The lay told us she doesn't cut our type of hair, but she will try if we want. End of the story was i had to shave him bald afterwards.

Mixed & born in 76. Hair came out wavy/straight & my hippie parents let it grow to my shoulders. People would come up to me & say "what a pretty little girl", so when I was around 4 I demanded a haircut so that people would just know I was a boy. Dad (black) & mom (white) took me to a nearby barber in the place I grew up (mostly white people). White barber looked at me, then mom, then dad... then all of us again & told dad "we don't cut that kind of hair here". Clearly, I didn't have "that kind" of hair, but they knew what he meant. Ended up at a salon getting my hair cut by the nicest black lady with the biggest late 70s afro; sky blue polyester, butterfly collared leisure suit! She cut my ear with the scissors but I got a red popsicle afterwards! 😅
