I have no idea who wrote this song, but those lyrics together with the video litteraly brought tears to my eyes. This song catches EVERYTHING perfectly of the journey in dark souls 2 and Ashelyn's voice is just......I don't even have words. From the bottom of my musical heart thank you Vaati, thank you for making this amazing content and thank you for introducing me to Ashelyn. If you happen to read this (even though this is a very late comment), never stop working as hard as you do, a lot of people want more videos faster but your content is the best when you take your time to make something as amazing as this and your other lore videos. Much love from Sweden.

This song... It caused me pain. It caused me the pain of the struggle we all know, the hardships of us undead. I felt every death and every victory, every decision and every regret... And most of all... I felt the determination of our fate. The second i heard the first line of lyrics, something clicked, and tears came to my eyes, my chest burned and i grit my teeth for something amazing. And something amazing came. With manly tears and a new love for what we put ourselves through, I write this. In hopes that my thanks for the experience i was just granted comes through.

The thing about DS2 is that it is by no means a bad game, it's just a poor Souls game. I played DS fairly late into it's life, but I still logged well over 500 hours into it, just because it grabbed me in a way very few games do. And after I was done learning the combat and game mechanics (which took a long-ass time!) I had all this amazing lore to delve into, which the devs obviously invested ludicrous amounts of time into. DS2 just wasn't the same. I played through it once, had fun, but that's it. I've barely played it since then which is in stark contrast to the first one which I couldn't put down. In my humble opinion they should make a third and final instalment, and just pray they get it right.

I have played the souls series since demons souls and I have to agree.... However lets talk about the good things dark souls 2 did...for one the gameplay is a heck of a lot better than demons souls or dark souls...adn the graphics did get bumped up a bit more hahaa Now for the bad things....it just didnt have the same exciting lore as dark souls 1 or demons souls ... But you have to understand DS2 is a direct sequel to DS1 so in essence it builds up on the lore from DS1 you cant really expect much froma sequel its never gonna be as good as its predecessor >_
@GreysonMacAllister10 жыл бұрын
MrMilkyCoco I have one counterpoint for both the better gameplay and inferior sequel clause: 1. In DS2 the difficulty is more often than not artificial and for its own sake. 2. The Godfather, Half-Life 2, Back to the Future, White Knight Chronicles 2, Any Elder Scrolls game that isn't ESO, LittleBigPlanet 2, Darksiders 2, and so on. I love all of the souls games, including DS2 (I realized that using DS as the abbreviation is slightly meh because Demon's Souls is also abbrevied as DS) but there were glaring issues and retreads that didn't blong because WHY DOES THE ROYAL RAT AUTHORITY EVEN SIF FROMSOFT THERE'S NO WAY IT COULD HAVE THE SAME TRAGIC IMPACT THAT THAT BOSS FIGHT HAD ON US!!! sorry, sorry. Ok, you are free to disagree with me but that's my 2 cents to toss on the table.
@MrMilkyCoco10 жыл бұрын
GreysonMacAllister yeah I somewhat agree with you its just since fromsoft basically knew dark souls would be a cash grab if they made a sequel, they pretty much half baked the storyline >_< the other games you mentioned actually put time into their sequel and cared about what is going to happen (even though in my opinion the ending of half life 2 made me hate it cause we still dont have a half life 3 hahaha they leave us at such a cliff hanger >_
@durchlogik834410 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. And as for the whole sequels are inferior thing, dark souls was essentially a sequel to demon souls. They worked to improve virtually every part of the game and made it a spiritual successor so they could start a fresh story. So I don't think it's fair to say darksouls2 was bad because it was a sequel. If they couldn't crest fresh lore and truly build on dks then they should have made another spiritual Successor and not tried. The reason dks2 failed was because it was Miyazaki wasn't behind it. With out his ingenuity and unwillingness to compromise his vision, the game turned into a rehashing of the original with copied bosses, no real lore, no restraint and artificial difficulty.

I don't think one should destroy Alex Roe's great work with vocals.
@PhobiaSoft10 жыл бұрын
It depends on who's vocals they are. Plus, it would have to be an arrangement that compliments vocals, obviously not someone simply singing on top of "Epitaph for Boletaria".
@PointThree10 жыл бұрын
PhobiaSoft The problem lies in adding vocals in the first place. The Souls' series has an amazing soundtrack built around atmosphere, and Alex Roe perfectly remasters the tune down to an A. Chanting is the furthest I could ever imagine in a Souls-esque song, but I'm always open to surprises and I'll be damned if someone manages to add in vocals to something like that and making it sound atmospheric at the same time.

Some contructive criticism (I hope): The song structure was really well made and fitted together with the visuals very nicely. Also great that the video is following some kind of path/story. The lyrics of the song are rhythmic and well chosen. They also fit the game pretty good. The singing is good, I like the general sound of her voice, but I think the mix of vocal techniques was way over the top. I mean - it's all nice and cool, like jumping from deep to flageolet or finishing a long note with a vibrato, but on many occasions it was too much to still feel musical. On some parts it was very well regulated, but often I felt kinda... meh. =/ Anyways, still a great experience. Keep it up!
@BidetToYou10 жыл бұрын
I agree with some of what you said, but I would argue that the lyrics are really cheesy, and altogether too literal all the way through. The secondary dominant at 3:00 helped the song pick up a bit, but I think this would have also benefited greatly from a second singer, or at least from the singer using multiple tracks, as some vocal overlap would have flowed better, and vocal harmony would have been a godsend. I think altogether this song sounds almost mechanical in its delivery, but I respect that it's also likely difficult tackling a series you're not familiar with and making a relevant piece that will actually work.

Too bad Dark Souls II's ending was garbage compared to the first one's endings. Same can be said for the entirety of Dark Souls 2 lore, pretty much every item description could be summarized by one sentence: "Weapon of an old hero...or is it?"
@devint240910 жыл бұрын
dark souls 2 lore was just even more vague descriptions that kind of allude to something that might have happened in dark souls. it's like reminiscing about that awsome weekend you had a couple weeks ago, everyone still remembers you don't need to remind them how awesome it was.

devint2409 the big problem with Ds2 is how little the scale of things were. We have a king in a barbaric war and a evil queen. On Ds we have Gods, Demons, The abyss, everything was epic, a adventure full of grandiosity. Mitical ancient beins.

I wouldnt say the story was garbage, not by a long shot, but..... well its hard to explain it. Its like Half life 1 and 2 endings, HL1 gman lets you decide to live or die whereas in HL2 gman just makes the decision for you. Just like rekindling or letting the bonfire die. Ultimately the decision you made was meaningless and the ending of the second installment in both games, like the gman puts it so well "Rather than give you the illusion of free choice...." Does this make the story of DkS1 or DkS2 meaningless? Hardly. DkS1 had ALOT of unanswered questions during its first few years, and so does DkS2. Maybe the DLC will answer some like it did for DkS1. Besides, wasnt the beauty of DkS1 putting together all the little clues and making up the 'side stories'(Tarkus, Havel, the history of pyromancy and etc)?

If we wanna be super technical, Lordvessel was more of a Post-hardcore song, but getting technical sucks.

Hey Vaati, before I say anything else, I'd like to applaud your passion towards an amazing series of games, the fact that you are willing to create a completely new style of devoted song-making similar but not like OCremix shows the love you have for the game and for that the Dark Souls community thanks you. But I would like to pose some criticism that I hope will help you create the next song in another manner. I honestly didn't like the song, but it's just not the kind of music I'm into, Taste is as always subjective. But as a seasoned musician, I can appreciate good pieces of music even in genres I don't usually listen to. The thing that ticked me off with this song was the fact that I didn't feel it embodied the DS world all that well. Just like the world of Dark Souls, I expected the song to revolve around environment and metaphors. But it didn't feel like it did. I was expecting the instruments to paint me a sad depressing world and the lyrics to give me a metaphorical story that related to the world of DS and specifically the main story-line according to the description. But the lyrics where WAY too literal for me, using the words hollow and throne and monarchy out of place just to keep the framework of the song in the DS thematology in an obvious manner. I would've liked the lyrics to be more free form in terms of writing and the references not so obvious. As for the instruments, I felt that sad piano and cello is the most obvious way to keep the mood sad by default. Not that bad a choice but a bit too obvious in terms of composition. Sounded like a generic Apocalyptica backing track honestly. I would've liked the composition to be more varying in terms of depth with more turning points with highs and lows even if you decide to stick with the piano+cello combo for the rest of the songs. I honestly hope I've written this in a constructive manner that can help the future Soulsongs in any way possible. and I'm looking forward to the Soulsong series. Best of luck Vaati!

Agree with this. I liked the musical composure, but it needed more variation. The voice was nice, but the lyrics felt like they were bludgeoning you.

Dear Vaati, Dear Ashelyn, I'm really greatfull for this video. Our long wait finally ended with some quality time, as always. Loved the Music, love the voices. AMAZING clip but... Allow me to be the shitty GamerTroll here : I think you missed totally the lyrics. Dark soul is (to me) about the universe. And here, i fell like you just forgot it. Yes, the inner questionnement (?) of the character is present and interesting (And meta, yum) but there is so much more to the GAME. I mean, i feel like this is the music of a film about amnesia, not about a game were you fight demon and monster and shit. Like i said, there IS this aspect. I guess all i'm saying a little more balance would have been better. Secondly, This is a great music for a trailer of the game, not for the game itself. I dont feel dark souls when i ear this. (Loved The Darksoul song with powerfull repetitive riff, and the echos of the fallen heroes, served the topic ) It feel like the artist know the universe because someone shown him, not because he/She was immersed in it. ( Don't know who wrote the music / Lyrics ) As always, this is only my opinion and i'm still glad to kindle this channel every month. Keep up the good stuff ! (Not English speaker, sorry)

You aren't being a "shitty GamerTroll" silly. You are just expressing your opinion, which is a wonderful thing to do! I more or less agree with you with the first and this song is just a tribute to the game so I wouldn't expect it to sound like it belonged in the game either.
@BlueTheLem0n10 жыл бұрын
"I wouldn't expect it to sound like it belonged in the game" I agree with that. I mean, it doesn't reflect the game. Lordvessel would be sooooo awkward in the game but i fell like it reflected it. "shitty GamerTroll" -> I dont what people to think that i could think that Ashelyn is a "Fake geek girl". Just That :) Thanks for your response

I thought the song was good, but it could have been great. Lyrics were clever and thought-out. The singing was amazing. But the rhythm/tone had so much more potential. There was no movement in the song, the entire song felt as if it was the same emotion. Good songs take you on a journey. Have the beginning start out less confident, (maybe less vibrato and slower) more depressing/intimidated by the DS environment and gradually grow to take on the huge physical/mental challange of becoming the next monarch. Just my two cents though.

I feel like she tried to do that when she modified the chorus each time, but you're right in that the tone was the same.

The song is pretty..uhh...hats the rift at to say this? It feels like it should pick up at some point but it keeps the same boring rhythm throughout the entire video. She has an excellent voice but the lyrics and tone just bore me to sleep.
@Doominen10 жыл бұрын
christopherLrat Indeed and how she plays with her voice a bit to much for my taste. For exampel All muhai memoriuhies.
@JaconSamsta10 жыл бұрын
christopherLrat Exactly, I was waiting patiently for this to take off sooner or later but it didn't. Besides that the lyrics weren't very good, cheap rhyms and overall a very bad flow. She tries to hide all that by pulling out words that feel like they shouldn't be pulled out (mostly because they are in the middle of the sentance) which ruins what makes this kind of singing special.

+NightBot Ban Too energetic to dark souls... But it's still one of the best songs ever.
@FranzbroetchenGaming8 жыл бұрын
Too energetic? That's what the gameplay feels like actually. Or how was it when you beat a boss in dark souls? I bet it was a energetic kind of feeling. It was fast, difficult and full of adrenaline and your only goal was to beat that boss at any costs!. That's why "Lordvessel" is so hyped in the Souls-Community. Because it deliverse exacly those feelings while telling us the story of the game like we always remember it. Not about to say that this song isn't good at any kind, not at all it is great, but it doesn't resemble our memories of how we played it and that's why "Lordvessel" will always be the best Soul-Songs. Funfact btw: When a friend and I played DarkSouls 3 and the Boss got low health we always played the OnePunchMan Intro to put pressure on use, while it pumps us up and feels more epic if we win.^^ Such fast paced music like "Lordvessel" really fits the gameplay.
