The 202 jumps out a bit more at first, but the tide quickly turns after a couple more samples. The 301 sometimes seem a bit opaque, but it isn't going to offend. An excellent value for sure. If you chose between it, the 316, axa35 and the Cambridge receiver, you could be a happy budget audio guy.

Any of those four are a great choice, but the S301 and AXR85 are my personal favorites, and I would have a very hard time deciding between the two. I guess it would depend on the speaker I chose, and which of the two I prefer with that speaker.

Different strokes for different folks. Both sound good with these Polks. (hey, that rhymes) The R202 actually comes across as a touch more open and transparent, but less clean, rich and weighty.

The R-N303 looks like the updated version of R-S202, WiFi / BT and digital inputs make it more versatile. binding posts on R-N303 "look" better than the clips on R-S202. Looking forward to the comparison

The AS301 is more transparent and brighter than the RS202, the power stages of both are different and the RS202 shares them with both the RS402 and the RS303, being different in the AS series, that is why the difference in sound, as a technical in audio electronics they can be seen in the topology of the circuits, the latter being cheaper and with a less warm sound.

RS402 and RS303 do not exist. You're confusing it with the R-N402 and R-N303, which sound completely different and sound much better than the R-S202

The R202 is a bit more forward and brighter in the mids, but the sound is edgy and too forward with the Polks compared to the much more natural, unstrained and sweet tonality and easygoing flow of the S301. It remains one of my favorite amps at any price, and has much better dynamics, detail resolution, nuance and expressiveness, and imaging compared to the 202. But, in spite of all that, the R202 still has a lot of the same Yamaha character to its sound., but it's a more flawed version of the Yamaha signature sound in comparison.
