[Sound Comparison] Yamaha QY70 vs. QY100 - Patterns

This is me playing back some factory patterns of the Yamaha QY70 through its own sound engine and simultaneously the QY100, switching A/B between them using their own volume sliders (very professional I know). They're both XG compatible but from different generations (like MU100 vs. MU128).
Both devices are set on the same level (judging from some identical sounds) and EQed neutrally.
Yes, there's backlight in both of them. I've got a tutorial in my main channel how I did it.

I liked the QY70 more than the 100, it sounds more open and clear to me.

Must agree. I was expecting the QY100 much better, but it sounds a bit muffled to me. Maybe there is some postprocessing (reverb, chorus) on QY100 activated?

There's nothing happening after their headphone outputs. However, you must consider that those patterns are optimized for the QY70's sound engine, not for the QY100's. If I switched the MIDI connection the QY100 would probably sound better.

The QY100 sounds fuller to me. It's like you cut away a lot of lower to upper mid-range when swapping to the QY70, which makes it sound more airy at first, but actually a lot thinner.

They both sound good. I agree above, the QY100 sounds more rounded and balanced to my ears. I think the quality could be described as more "modern". It depends what your goals are in the mixing.

Both sounds the same, QY70 is in whole test louder ... that´s all. Both have the same audio engine.

After so many years I had to buy back the QY 100, it's on the way....and getting expensive. I never became good friend with the apps, although I've found some with Chord Search and Chord Composition...but there are phrases on the QY one could combine, I forgot that part and I like the guitar amp too. Hey there, let me ask you. I have a QY100 and the physical volume button on the left seems so powerful, I mean, when I insert an Earphone and turn up the volume after the middle, and starts to play a pattern, the sounds seems to be distorting because it is "too loud". I see on your video the you rise the volume to the maximum and it doesn't distort the sound. I wonder if you using a earphone and put the volume on maximum or after the middle, you hear a distorted sound? Thanks.

I used the midi from that horn riff at 5:29 in one of my songs. There are quite.a few gems in the preset patterns on the QYs.

Is the line out socket the only audio output for the qy70? What I mean is can I connect the qy70 to a pc with a firewire sound module (Echo Audiofire 2) using midi or 'to host' and then monitor the qy70 by sound played back out from the pc to a hifi system? Sorry, I'm new to audio hardware like this! Would that require special software on my computer?

A lot people are going DAWless these days too. I picked up a QY70 a few months ago and will definitely be using it with hardware drum machines, rack synths, sequencers, effects pedals, etc 👍

Ah, you made a second channel. :-) I do hear a difference but to me, it seems negligible. The QY100 sounds more "powerful", for a lack of better words.

This has been really helpful for me. I’ve been curious to see if there was any way to get MIDI files to sound like music from Playstation 1 and Sega Saturn games. I think devs created music with similar devices and then recorded them onto CD. I gotta ask, would you be willing to help me make some remixes with me? Do you have an email I can contact you at?

You can, if you hook a MIDI interface (preferably USB) in between. Just gotta tell you that the QY100 is sensitive to Bank select commands. Sometimes MIDI files send a bank 0 select on the drums channel which makes the QY to select a piano (or other non-drum instrument) as drums.

The QY100 has more features, but the QY70 sounds way better!!! You just ruined my QY100. Now I have to find a QY70 on EBay.

Please pay attention that those patterns were made for the QY70 and certainly sound different on the QY100. There's another video where I do it vice versa. The QY100 has far more realistic sounds, however it's not as "in your face" as the QY70.

Yes. And you can directly transfer songs and patterns from 70 to 100 (with only minor data lost, like pattern tracks in songs).

Oh, hehe, yes. QY70 pattern "Smooth 1" is based on the TLC song. You just have to put it together yourself to make it a complete song.

Something is "WRONG" with this comparison! With the QY-70 you are in Pattern Mode! With the QY-100 you are in Song Mode! The Song Mode is the Mode to Mix the Song! The Pattern Mode have more "Direct out" ! And truely i don't understand why NOT both maschines by comparison into the same mode??? Edit: Ah i Understand...you trigger from the QY-70 the QY-100 and send to them the Pattern into a Song! That is NOT a Comparison...that won't work. I my Opinion the QY-70 is more open ...but QY-100 Sounds to quietly, but more Low End more HiFi! Thats while you send the Pattern to Song Mode!

The tone generator doesn't care if the MIDI data comes from a pattern or a song. I could also send some MIDI files from the PC to both devices in song mode (a.k.a. the only mode where you can directly communicate with the tone generator). It wouldn't make a single difference. But yes, the QY100 has a warmer more HiFi sound.
