I just watched the video and learned a lot. I just wonder if you could make a special tutorial (tutorials) tailored for techno- and trance composers, making full patterns (Intro, Mains AB, Fills, End) ...to show how we old beginners should proceed, making 1 pattern set for trance, and one full set for techno, etc. What to consider and how to proceed with it, with your best knowledge, to put us, new users, on a track, lol. You could jump over all that QY user stuff you showed here, creating instead modern genre-special patterns. My point is that Yamaha didn't implement NEW styles at that time, like modern trance, techno, ambient and now synthwave. It would be so great to learn from the Master, lol, how you think and what we should implement, when creating moderns songs, or rather patterns, in this case. Almost all styles on the QY are pretty old-style, like enka, waltz, blues and rock...but few or non trance- techno- and electronica-styles/full pattern sets. When we got the patterns, it would also be interesting to see how to set up a modern trance song (with patterns and variation), to create a full 3-5 minutes composition, with the patterns we programmed. Thanks for all your work and demos!

Hallo JayB, Kannst Du mir etwas Erklären?

You can always use Bulk Dumps to export your songs and patterns. Just make a MIDI connection from the QY to your computer, use a SysEx tool like Snoize SysEx Librarian, and on the QY go to Menu -> Utility -> Menu -> Bulk Dump to transfer sounds. You can also download the QY70 data filer for Windows from my website and run it via wine (e.g. CrossOver, Wineskin Winery or PlayOnMac). Though I experienced issues using the latest CX22 versions so better get the second or third latest version of Wine.

From what I remember, even though it has a 16 channel sequencer you can only send out channels 1 to 8 *or* 9 to 16 at one time. I think that's what put me off buying one when they were released originally. Such a powerful sequencer though.. Might be worth picking one up for modern analogue gear. 🤔
@JayBmusic4 жыл бұрын
Those 1-8 and 9-16 are the settings for sending out pattern events. The QYs are 24 track sequencers. On Song mode you have 16 linear MIDI tracks that go straight to MIDI Out (and the internal tone generator of course). But since you cannot put more than 16 channels over one MIDI line you have to decide whether you want the pattern tracks to be mixed with channels 1-8 or 9-16 or not at all. This of course only affects Midi Out, not the internal tone generator.

Nice tutorial! Can you controll the qy effects/ sliders /parameters and mixer etc from an external midicontroller? ? Do the QY have an arpeggiator
@JayBmusic6 жыл бұрын
The QY react to most standard MIDI control changes so your average MIDI keyboard should be able to change volume, pan, cutoff frequency, resonance, attack and release times, portamento, reverb, chorus and variation sends. You cannot control effect details such as reverb time or chorus LFO speed because these require sysex and I don't really think a MIDI controller supports that. No, the QY doesn't have an arpeggiator. You can emulate an arpeggiator through the pattern mode though.

Coming from a music tracker background, I wanted to transition into the QY100 and I have several questions: 1.) How many phrases can I add into a track? Would I be able to add four phrases into C1 (for instance), so one phrase plays a set of chords then there's slight variation with the other three phrases? 2.) How many user patterns can I add into a section (i.e Intro, Fill AB, etc.)? Is it just one pattern per section to create a song or am I able to also put multiple user patterns down to make a proper buildup, transitions, etc.
@JayBmusic6 жыл бұрын
Révolu It's always one phrase per track per section per pattern. So to make variations you either make the pattern longer or use various sections. You can use several patterns in a song but each time the pattern changes the QY will send a bunch of midi messages to its tone generator with new instruments settings and effect parameters and so on. So you might experience a little sound gap in between. With the QY100 the gap is very small, but with the QY70 its definitely audible.
@Manquant6 жыл бұрын
So from what I'm understanding, you're able to write various patterns then jump between them to write a complex piece? Or is it limited to writing loops and sketching out ideas? The most I've worked with in terms of step sequencers is Nanoloop if you're familiar with it. You're able to write phrases for numerous tracks available, then jump from one phrase to another in that same track (i.e. melody/lead) while the others play the same one (bassline, drums), or move all of the phrases together at once. Is it pretty much the same concept/idea?

Well there's two ways of doing it: you can either place a pattern no. 129 "---END---" on bar 5 and then start cycle playback by holding Shift and pretting Play. But there's always a minimal gap when it jumps back to bar 01. A better solution would be duplicating your chord sequence with Job 09 (copy event or something). My budget for such a thing would be no more than $100 considering that with enough time and effort I could use an Arduino development board with an audio chip to make my own with only the functions I need, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

Well actually the QY can do this in song mode. 16 linear tracks, copy & paste, everything you want. the only thing is that saving only works on smart media card or via MIDI.

@@JayBmusic Sounds promising! (Pun intended) Is there a European seller for these? Is it possible to get a €100 max model and how much would it cost?

@@альфредпетрович-д7р Problem is; as far as I know, there is no SD card nor USB support.
@альфредпетрович-д7р4 жыл бұрын
@@retrozvoc6189 actually the latest model (QY-100) has a slot for some sort of memory cards (smart media or something), if you really need that for some reason. "USB-support" for anything with MIDI ports is provided by a generic USB MIDI adapter, so it's no problem at all. it's plain idiotic when some modern MIDI gear has no MIDI ports (that's not funny) at all because they are "USB-supported" - and thus you can not directly connect such "midi gear" to actuall midi gear.

How do I save it?
@JayBmusic6 жыл бұрын
It saves automatically. Unless your backup battery is empty. If all data is lost when turning off, open up the unit and replace the button cell battery (a CR2032 IIRC).

This is difficult to word but I'll give it a go: Do you know if, within song mode, there is a way of triggering patterns to start at different bars. For example, I want the first 2 bars (1 + 2) from Main A, followed by the final 2 bars (3 + 4) of Main B?

How can I save tracks on my QY70? Batteries for this sequencer go dead after 5 years. This means all your tracks get wiped off! Its happened to me before. I have a Mac that I need to transfer and save my QY70 tracks onto. And then transfer back to my QY70 - when the battery goes dead. I'm not very tecky, so need some simple process. A tutorial on about this saving QY70 tracks onto an external device would be very useful.
@JayBmusic5 жыл бұрын
Why not quickly replace the backup battery? It's a CR2032 and it's easy to do. Mine lasted for 10 years. gaute.lykkenborg.no/2006/12/yamaha-qy70-backup-battery.html For backing up you need to send bulk dumps from the utility menu. I might make a video about that one day.

there's a special QY70 data filer program somewhere at yamahas, and a pdf manual for it. that wouldnt be easy to find because the sales-fukers have messed their site ones again and overall dont care much about you to use their "outdated" gears once bought for a freaking half a thousand. but at least you know what to search for. for some reason i have a mac version on the HD (though i only distantly saw a mac this year, for the first time in my being) and i definitelly downloaded it from somewhere just this week. also probably a generic SisEx librarian tool (like Elektron C6 wich is for both systems) will help as well - i dont actually own a QY70 or 100 to check for that, only a QY20.

I've had a QY100 for years and honestly can't stand the thing. I just suck at programming it and never had the time to really learn how to use it. I figured I would watch some tutorials and give it another chance but after watching this I don't think I'll ever get the hang of it.

If you're more comfortable working in a DAW, there is Yamaha's S-YXG50 VSTi, which is basically a QY70/100 with some additional sounds. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hILZgYZ6r7V_g7M

@@SamHocking Interesting. I'll have to check that out. Thank you for the suggestion. I'm pretty good at navigating DAWs and for some reason don't mind spending hours programming drums down to minute details on a DAW whereas on the QY100 I lose my patience. I think what bothers me the most with the QY100 is the tiny screen, little buttons and interface and having to jump back and forth through the menus. Are you familiar with any newer sequencers or drum machines? I would like to get something I could use live that's somewhat user friendly.
@SamHocking3 жыл бұрын
@@cdkilo77 No problem. Search google for s-yxg50 vsti and first result will be the place to download it. You will need an XG Editor to edit patches as the VSTi has no editable interface to speak of. Generally, you'll run the VSTi in your DAW, or within an external VSTi host such as SAVIHost, then use a loopback midi port to connect it all up to midi and then take the audio back to your DAW's input bus either physically or virtually. As for drum programming, I can't help, I don't really do any live drums, just sequence on the DAW I'm afraid.
