If ur wondering, "sound dampening foam" will do nothing to reduce sound travelling through a wall. All it will do is reduce acoustic reverb within the space where the sound is. So in a car, sound dampening foam might give a little benefit by reducing reverb because its such a small space that reducing reverb might help the overall sound you need to block. If you want to deaden sound (aka reduce the sound traveling through a wall, aka sound proofing) you need to add mass. Whatever is the most dense and will vibrate the least, will block the sound waves the best. Foam isn't dense, therefore it will not stop sound going straight through it. Simple physics.

Damping = changing the resonant frequency or amplitude of a substrate. Dampening = getting something wet. Used in a sentence: Damping was applied to the first few seconds of the video and fooled me into turning my speakers up too far. It spooked me into knocking my drink to the floor - dampening the carpet. OK 2 sentences.

Anyone who has superior canal dehiscence knows exactly how sound dampening affects our everyday lives. People with SCDS have brains that have adapted to prioritize sound being conducted through their skeleton moreso than sound entering the ear. Thus, with SCDS, you can put all the sound dampening stuff you want on the walls, but you also have to insulate the floor somehow (or your shoes, or find a way to levitate) to achieve that sweet, sweet silence.

Not EXACTLY what sound damping is, but close enough. Damping is more to do with controlling the sound than eliminating it entirely, for example damping in subwoofer enclosures. The sound still permeates but it has been conditioned to sound less boomy than otherwise.
