Our Van Plan

Күн бұрын

The van build continues with the installation of Silent Coat 2mm Sound Deadening Sheets followed by Dodomat 6mm Super Liner closed cell foam.
The sound deadening helps to reduce the tinny, hollow sounding metal sound of a panel van by adding mass to each panel. We used one sheet on each large panel and half a sheet on the smaller ones. We also used it on the floor, in strips, on the ceiling and on the MASSIVE wheel arches! Overall it does make a difference, particularly when driving, and feels like the first step to making this panel van a home on wheels.
The next thing we decided to do was install 6mm closed cell foam insulation on op of the sound deadening. Most people don't seem to do this although it does appear popular on conversions in Europe. The foam acts as a noise reducer, insulator and (in my mind at least) helps to reduce the amount of bare metal and hopefully helps to minimise condensation. I'm not convinced on the science of this but for a bit of extra time and effort we wanted to do it.

WHO ARE WE?
We're Mark and Neil and this is Our Van Plan. We've always wanted a camper van and took the plunge in 2020 by ordering a brand new medium wheelbase (L2H2) Fiat Ducato. We are converting it ourselves into the van of our dreams with little previous experience. We're glad to have you along for the ride!

Hi Guy. I have enjoyed your videos and like you decided to by new over second hand due to the deals available only I went for a L3H2 . Yesterday I installed my Maxxfan and Heki midi roof light and today have done some of the sound deadening. Used Dado Deadn and covered the panels fully. But I have used the same Dado Super Liner. Once that’s all done I have decided to get Dado Thermo Liner. Hopefully this will give me enough Insulations and act as a vapor barrier. I look forward to seeing how you progress and I think we will be using the same things to build our camper vans. Regards Kevin

Thanks Kevin. Sounds like you’re making good progress. Ultimately any combination will work, but I don’t know about you but this stage is quite long winded and tedious at times! Will get there in the end. Nice to know someone else has gone with a new van. Are you on Instagram or anything?

@@OurVanPlan Hi Guy. Yes it is tedious and time consuming but worth the effort. I had considered spray foam but went with the combination I have. My van came a good month before it was due so buying it was so quick it didn’t give me time to get materials. Then only find the things I had decided to use were out of stock. No I am just on Facebook but might get a Instagram account. I am looking forward to following your progress and how you are doing some of the jobs that will need to be carried out. As you are building a quality van. Thank Kevin

I'm working on my Citroen Relay L1 H1 so we can access areas easier (being the smaller van) it is 8x6 floorspace and 5'4" floor to ceiling...now decided on a double bed hack..I've recently saw on KZbin.. Basically it's a galvanized telescopic beam x3 and u then add the slat pack for 25 quid. The 3 beams were 10 quid each...cheaper lighter to use than making a bulky frame..more space for more electrics etc and two electric bikes (plan B) fingers crossed ⚔️

Would be interested in knowing more if possible? Converting a L4H3 so want to check out lightweight options for furniture instead of carting tonnes of wood around lol.

I agree it’s a nightmare what do you ....do you put in the sound deadening or don’t ...the problem is if you don’t and your van is finished and if it’s a lot of noise you’re gutted... so I guess you have to do it!!! Please keep us updated if the close foam does stop the condensation on the van I presume it will

Haha yep spot on! I think it’s ultimately worth doing the deadening (but not going too mad and covering every inch of every panel) but the foam I’m not so sure. Hopefully it’ll do it’s job behind the scenes but it’ll be hard to tell. Thanks for watching 👍🏻

Enjoying the videos guys! This is an option that I'm thinking about - to convert rather than buy. I have loads of questions, but one general one for now - what is your skill level? Are you experienced DIYers? Did that influence your decision to take on the project? OK, that was more than one question...
@OurVanPlan
@OurVanPlan 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tony. So total honesty - we are total amateurs and don’t have very much DIY skill at all! We wanted a project that was a bit different and with the cost of buying finished vs cost to convert, we thought we’d give it a go! There’s a LOT to think about and plan but there are loads of resources online. I think you need patience, logical mind and element of practical skills but I’ve only ever put shelves up and built flat pack furniture 😂

1:04 no way that sheet was 50% coverage on that panel, it's more like 20-25%. Don't waste fuel and money on 50% coverage though, 25% is all you need, they just want to sell you more material lol.

Hi good videos easy to watch and informative. Quick question sound deadening and dodo mat, or could you get away with just dodo mat? Cheers, looking forward to watching your progress, bit envious you having a brand new Ducato when we get round to doing ours (retirement project) we will be looking at a used Boxer, Ducato or Relay, probably going L3 H2, but prices are pretty high considering what they were going for 3 or 4 years ago, all this staycation malarky seems to have pushed used prices well up.

Good to have you along Rob. I’d prioritise the sound deadening over the dodo mat if we had to choose one. It’s crazy where the prices of used vans have gone. There were some cracking deals on new hence we went that route. Good luck with your project.

Great Job on the insulation...will you be filling the Chanel's also and will you put in some kind of cellotex then moisture barrier?

I've got same van. Kept bulkhead for safety. Bulkhead was radiating heat from cab in sunny conditions. Lined bulkhead with superliner and then carpet. Drastically reduced heat transfer. Superliner sufficient as sole insulation material?

You've covered every panel. Are you not fitting any extra windows?
@OurVanPlan
@OurVanPlan 3 жыл бұрын
No, just the one in the sliding door and the two in the rear doors. It’s only a medium wheel base so it’s nice and light in there.

@@OurVanPlan I'm no expert but I believe if you want to register it with DVLA as a campervan you need at least two windows on one side. Best to check the requirements before you get in too deep.

Yeah you do but they’re getting very strict about accepting changes of vehicle type to the extent they basically don’t any more. We’re not bothered as we decided that we didn’t need to do that anyway, it doesn’t really make any difference. But appreciate the heads up 👍🏻
