Thanks for this video. I've also been trying to get Allan Holdsworth sounds for a long time, mainly through software. I really like the 3 sounds in the video. But I feel a lack: The explanation is incomplete. It is not explained how to create the patches in Valhalla following the provided UD-Stomp patch list. Understanding that the Delay Time of each Patch would have to be adjusted in Valhalla and also the PAN settings, but I don't see any other UD-Stomp setting that can be put in Valhalla. In the video you also talk about how the Valhalla settings would also carry the modulation... In addition, the post-gain settings for the effects chain in Blue Cat Patchwork, which I see in the video have certain values, I don't know where to find them... I bought the Valhalla and the Blue Cat Patchwork and I am disappointed at this lack of explanation that prevents us from Creating Allan's Patchwork. I do not see the name or the way to communicate with the author of the video… Please, that the author of the video or someone explain to us what I indicated above. Not only me, but all those who want to get Allan's Patches that the video promises but does not adequately explain, we would be very grateful.

Have you tried a plug-in called BYOME (Build Your Own Modulation Engine) from plug-in alliance. Expensive but sometimes on sale for $50. You can have up to 40 effects. Delays, Reverb’s, oscillators, filters, envelope followers, sequencers connected in all kinds of ways. The way you put it all together is clever and fun.

Really great/informative video. Just to clarify, it appears that you are using the parameter listings for the UD Stomp presets from the .pdf and “translating” them to each the 8 (or so) Valhalla Delay parameter settings in the Patchwork plug. Right? By the way, your playing examples fit well with the patches you’re illustrating. Great work. I’m sure you’ve checked Holdsworth’s work with the Tony Williams Lifetime, Soft Machine and, of course, UK.

Correct. In general, the millisecond delay times are right on with the real UD-Stomp, as are the percentages of levels and feedback (i.e., 2.5 = 25% on the Valhalla). Modulation rate is a little tricky, but if take whatever the value is in the PDF and divide in half, seems pretty close to the US setting. And yes, have checked all the early Holdsworth stuff!
@GauteEliassenMusic

@@chordsoforion is it the "SPEED" column in the pdf that you divide in half to get the MOD rate in Valhalla? What about the LEVEL, EFFECT LEVEL and DIRECT LEVEL?
@chordsoforion

@@GauteEliassenMusic No - it is Speed in the UD-Stomp patchiest that I am dividing. The levels you can play around with them. 8.5 in the UD-Stomp patchiest would be 85% in the plugin.

Hey there! Thanks for your great work! I previously had a version of this rigged up in Logic using their stock plugins but this is a lot better. I wanted to ask a few pertinent questions- I really hope you or someone here will help me with these! Here goes: 1. I've basically set this up and it sounds great, but I'm confused about the way you have your stereo width setup on different instances of Valhalla Delay. In the video I see varying instances of Valhalla Delay with the "width" control either at 0% or -100% values. Obviously the Pan plugin after each instance is doing the job of panning, but why are we not feeding it a full stereo signal on each band before panning hard-left or hard-right? Is the idea that each instance is folded down to mono by setting 'width" to 0% before it hits its following pan plugin in Patchwork? Or then, why are you at -100% "width" values on some of the instances of Valhalla Delay which, according to the Valhalla manual, would only flip the L/R signals to mirror their usual configuration? I tried to find all the spots in your video where the "width" controls were shown, and I never saw one where the width control was just set to 100% like normal. 2. Some of the UD Stomp settings have "tap" adjusted to be less than 100. But we don't have separate controls for delay time and "tap" on the Valhalla Delay, do we? What do we do when on "AH Chorus 7" for example, "tap" is at 25.4 and "delay time" is at 31.5? How to set that up? 3. I don't agree with the user below who said that "level" corresponds to "mix". Because for example at "Level 6.5", to me that just means that the volume of that delay band is 65% of maximum output, not that the "mix" of that delay band should be set to 65% because then you get dry signal running through that band which is probably not what AH/Yamaha intended. So how can we adjust a delay band to a lesser "Level" or gain value than 100% and have it correspond to the original Yamaha settings for each band? In the Patchwork plugin, you can boost or trim the gain of each individual band directly on the plugin's post section on the right side of the plugin, but then how do we convert "65%" to a decibel value for trimming? It's not clear... Thanks!

I'm fortunate to have a number of pieces of gear inspired by Alan Holdsworth and one is the UD STOMP VahallaDelay to UD STOMP settings; UD Stomp DELAY TIME = DELAY in ms in the VahallaDelay ~ 23.6 DELAY in the UD Stomp is 23.6ms in VahallaDelay DELAY UD Stomp FEEDBACK 0 to 10 = FEEDBACK 0 to 200% on the VahallaDelay ~ 4.5 in the UD Stomp is 45% in VahallaDelay FEEDBACK UD Stomp SPEED 0 to 10 = MOD Rate on the VahallaDelay ~ 2.5 SPEED in the UD Stomp is 2.5 Hz in VahallaDelay MOD Rate UD Stomp DEPTH 0 to 10 = MOD Rate 0 to 10 Hz ~ so 2.5 Depth in the UD Stomp is 25% in VahallaDelay DEPTH UD Stomp LEVEL 0 to 10 = MIX 0 to 100% on the VahallaDelay ~ 6.5 LEVEL in the UD Stomp is 65% in VahallaDelay MIX Pan is Pan - very simple to setup The area I'm stuck when trying to make ValhallaDelay parameters the same as the UD Stomp parameters is in the TAP on the UD Stomp. Here in the UD Stomp TAP is defined as "the timing at which the delay sound is taken out of the delay loop." Page 14 of the UD Stomp Manual Anyone have any ideas how to dial this up?

100% tap on the UD-Stomp = 1/4 note on the Valhalla Delay, 75% on the UD = dotted eight, 66% = triplet, 50% = 1/8 note, etc. Also, in my testing, I have found that the modulation rate on the Delay does not map directly to the UD-Stomp. To my ear, the rate sounds closer if you take 1/2 the value of the UD-Stomp setting and apply it to the V Delay. For example, 2.5 on the UD-Stomp sounds very close to 1.25 hz on the Delay, at least to my ear.

Chords Of Orion I agree - it’s all pretty much 1:1 except the modulation speed. I’ve been messing with this exact combo (Valhalla delay + BC Patchwork) for while and have yet to get exactly the rates that sound like the UD/MS algorithms - to my ears. It’s easier to hear the subtle differences between modulation rates at lower speeds. There’s another 8-band delay plugin called PSP608 that can achieve almost the same effect but the preset management isn’t as neat as Valhalla Delay.

@@tobbebergman7583 yeah partially correct if you’re looking at the swell and chorus type patches that require modulating the delay time (resulting in minute pitch fluctuations) to emulate the rich-sounding UD chorus effects. But the stereo lead patches don’t use modulation so it could work there. Anyway, I’ve dropped the PSP608 for now as you can’t achieve the luscious UD style effects with it for the very reason you stated. IMO, the closest thing to the UD Stomp is using two instance of the band delay in the Axe-Fx devices. That’s some seriously nice delay.

I was wondering about this as well... I have a UD Stomp and I just grabbed this Blue Cat Audio PATCH WORK plug... and I'm scanning the UD Stomp Manual trying to setup the Valhalla Delay to match and I'm going to assume SPEED listed for the UD is equivalent to Rate in Hz in the Valhalla Delay. Now the Depth on the UD Stomp goes from 0 to 10, so I will assume 2.5 Depth in the UD Stomp is 25% in Valhalla Delay Depth and set up the software that way.

Who is actually going to buy these pedals, thinking that is how you can get Holdsworth's sound? You can use any chorus/delay you already have. They key to his sound is he did selective picking, before it was even called that. On solos he would hammer through the scales with his left hand, as well as bending them. So you get this unique wobbly solo sound. That and he uses certain types of scales with some dissonance.

I purchased the J.Rocket AH box as was disappointed with direct recording (I have no outboard amps). My 'real' lead buddy said I needed an amp for the J.Rocket. I see you're using the Iridium. How important is that in that lead sound? Can I get it with just the Valhala and Blue Cat? If I do need an amp can I use something like THU-Full which I have. Hi Larry: the AH lead tone evolved over the years, but in the latter years, he settled on amp modeling from Yamaha, specifically the DG series amps and then the Magicstomp. The amp model was called Lead 1 and was inspired by a Marshall JCM800 amp. In addition, he liked Celestion V30 speakers. So what does this mean? You will need an amp modeler that can do the Marshall amp and cab kind of thing. Put a compressor in front of it, then adjust the gain to 7-8, treble 2-3, mids - pretty much all the way up, bass - 0-2. There was a lot more tweaking he did, in particular with pre and post EQ, but those are the basics. The iridium does it very well, but it's not the only one. There are a bunch of software amp modelers that would be worth trying. Also, the J. Rockett works really well if you front end it into an amp modeler like the iridium. use the boost and the overdrive and adjust, keeping in mind that you want a mids heavy tone. Hope this helps!

I don't have Bigwig, but there very well be a way. You just really to be able to apply modulation to each delay line separately. Best thing to do is download t he UD-Stomp patch list and look the parameters to see how they might map into Bigwig.

Hi Bill, love your channel, thanks for what you do. Am seeing this for the 1st time and am a huge AH fan. For the last lead preset, #131 is there something else you are using to get that classic AH sustain / horn type sound or is it purely the delay settings? Best regards

Hey Howie: Sorry I missed this. The lead preset was as described. The way I got the sustain was to adjust the Strymon Iridium for a lead tone. Also, I turn down the tone control for all of my lead playing to smooth out the tone.

Bill, no modulation on Allan's lead tones? Ever? So his slight "talking" effect came from Haas effect of the delays only, with no modulation?

The lead preset that I demoed is one of 9 on the UD-Stomp, none of which use modulation. As to whether or not he ever used modulation on a lead tone on his albums or during a live set, that would be hard to say.

What's a plug-in? Someone, please explain this to an old guy who didn't get his first computer or mobile phone until around 2011-2013. Please. Others have tried and I just don't get it. Where do I plug in??? OMG, I'm halfway into this and this is like an IT lecture not Rock n Roll. Presets of someone else's tone you "make" (not create) fiddling about on a bloody computer. Truly, we live in Dystopian times. Nothing personal, COR. You're awesome. But everyone is subject to this nightmare, nobody escapes. Myself included.

Seriously? Welcome to the age of the computer., sir! We now record on computers using software, or an APP called a "Digital Audio Workstation." I'm guessing you've heard of some of these, like ProTools, Cubase, Reaper, Logic, Audition, Nuendo, FL Studio, Studio One, etc. In these "Digital Audio Workstations" (DAW for short) various Effects like delays, reverbs, etc., are included, called "VST plugins" (VST = Virtual Studio) . Once you record a track of audio into your DAW (like you would on tape in a studio), you can add effects (just like in a studio). Bill is demonstrating how these. Gotta adapt to the times my fellow older person. This is how music is recorded, and it is SO MUCH easier than in the old days once you learn how. Don't be afraid of the water, come dive in with us.

Plug Ins are relatively small (generally) programs that simulate either a virtual instrument, or in this case an effect or group of effects. They are great standalone but absolutely invaluable when used within a Digital Audio Workstation program (Such as Reaper, Logic, Digital Performer, ProTools, Cubase). You must have an "audio interface" (i.e.: with audio to digital converters for inputs and digital to audio converters for outputs) into your computer to use them. If you've ever recorded, in simplest terms think of these "plug in effects" as being effects pedals or rack units in your signal chain into the board (though they are capable of much more in routing). My best advice for you to really grasp the power of plug ins is to reach out to anyone you know that records and ask them if they would be willing to let you come over and take a few minutes to show you what plug ins do. I could not afford to do the music I do without so many great low cost and even free plug ins.

Hey Matt: Dave and lastdaysguitar provide some helpful information and advice. I'll just say that many newer pedals are kind of like mini-computers complete with processing units, memory, etc. It's all kind of blending together if you know what I mean. That being said, I get what you saying about not letting the tech overshadow the music. I think that line is different for different folks, and some of its depends on what you are trying to accomplish in your art.

Well you could always fiddle about using a 24 track tape machine and a room or two full of expensive - and often vintage - hardware if you prefer I suppose, but it’s a heck of a lot easier and cheaper to use a computer as the recording and processing tool, and it also makes possible things that “traditional” studios simply could not do..

I started learning Cubase, its plug-ins and downloading other free plug-ins for the first time in January. I was nearly 58yrs old at that point. You can learn this stuff, there are tutorial videos for all the functions of my DAW, for example, Cubase, on youtube. If you have a savy friend, maybe they can show you some basics too. That can help. This isn't dystopian. It's one of the BEST things that has happened for musicians, period.

Although I really like the J Rockett AH OD, you can get in that direction pretty easily with other gear. Here's the key that I learned from the old AF forum (and wrote down/copied): His Yamaha DG-era/Magicstomp lead tone used the Lead 1 amp sim, which was inspired by a Marshall JCM. Gain is less than you might think - about 6-7, with a compressor in front. Tone controls were set to: Bass 0-1, Low mid 8-10, high mid 8-10, Treble 2-3. I take these settings as "concepts" and apply them to whatever I am actually using. Also, don't forget to use the bridge humbucker with the tone knob rolled down significantly.
