Allan was a friend of mine and I have a little memorial Allan collection. I have 2 Magic Stomps and all three versions of his Carvin/ Kiesel signature models and they are my only guitars and the CD Box set. I have his J Rockett signature boost pedal too. I was there when he was using all that stuff. I handled his gear on and off stage for years. I remember changing strings on his Bill Delapp. Thank you for this video. It brings some solace. Great times, lots of pints. Great memories. Cheers chaps! I'll see you.....then.

Dude that's awesome. I've been a huge Allan Holdsworth fan since I was 14. I had no idea who Allan was, I was in a guitar shop, looking at instructional materials, and I saw his REH video. So I bought it. I'll never forget the guy at the counter looking at me, smirking, and saying "Good luck kid". Purchasing that video irreparably changed my life. Cheers.

It has the most gorgeous delays & modulation indeed. But how do you activate & store an expression pedal for effect level as ALWAYS active (on all presets), I mean also after switching the UD stomp off and back on again? Now I need to go through the lengthy and complicated procedures on p24 and p26 of the manual every time after switching the unit on. And even then, after using the expression pedal a bit, it suddenly is no longer active, even without me switching the unit off! Both are on my pedal board and I just want to keep the expression pedal active all the time, automatically.

Not to get too dramatic but I’ve followed this video to the letter and turned a nice bass magic stomp into the most surreal and gorgeous AH sound imaginable . The chorus sounds alone make the purchase of my new HH2 Kiesel worth every penny. I’ve known AH music for 40 years. Before I saw your videos I had little to no hope of experiencing his music from the inside. Now that I have the tone my big job is to learn his voicings, create a few of my own and bathe in the ‘other world’ sound the two combine to make. This sound is a dream come true for me. Thank you. I want to pay you some money for this. What’s the best way?

I got it because honestly I didn't have a lot of money when I first started playing guitar and it seemed like the best bang for the buck. I've tried other effect units and pedals over the years but I just keep going back to the magicstomp. This is also my go-to for connecting to synths because the tone you can get is amazing.

2 suggestions for running the editor in windows 10 - go to Windows explorer and navigate to the .exe that launches the editor and right-click and go to Properties > compatibility. check the box to "run this program in compatibility mode" and at the drop-down choose a supported OS for the editor like XP. Then just below check the box "run this program as an administrator" and click ok thru the dialogs.. Now when the editor is launched, it will be with elevated Admin Rights and the program will think it's on windows XP... One other tip is to not install the editor in Program Files (x86) but rather install to a folder on the root of C, as the rights required for the Program files folder are typically higher ... cheers!

@@TurrigenousOfficial I started with the DG-Stomp, later hand modified for reduced noise. I'd forgotten that the DG series started in the nineties. Around the time I got a Magicstomp I recall seeing the last of the UD-Stomp's disappearing from the catalogs and wished I'd gotten that for the knob-per-function control. Would be really interested to hear it used with a matrix transistor like amp and real cab. I think the axe fx can sometimes sound a bit plasticy doing this, whilst amazing over a PA. I forgot to add in the video but I didn't think it was a big deal, but Allan said in a clinic that he didn't really care about a clean sound. "Clean is clean". Although I don't agree 100% those were his sentiments. I suppose just using a Fender Twin or Deluxe would be good enough for that!
@lukedoyle
@lukedoyle 3 жыл бұрын
@@TurrigenousOfficial I’d say Allan’s comment makes perfect sense in reference to his own clean sound. Great video. A couple of things though. First, the GK pickup is not a “MIDI pickup” - it’s a divided pickup or a hex pickup; it does not produce MIDI. The VG-8 did not use or generate pitch-to-MIDI data but rather relied on individual string signals from the 6 discrete mini humbuckers which were then processed individually. Second, and I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that in the Yamaha gear period Allan always used two amps, not four. He did always have four speakers though; two in the combos (for stereo clean amplification) and two external cabs (driven by an external power amp for his stereo lead sound)...though I’m vastly oversimplifying this.
@TurrigenousOfficial
@TurrigenousOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
@@lukedoyle Didn't know that about the GK! I have that pickup and I was always told it was a 'midi' pickup. Secondly you could be right about the cabs. I think before moving to the Magicstomps/Yamaha stuff, he was using 2 different amps for clean/lead and 2 amps between them. Afterwards, he might have just used 4 speakers then and I just didn't notice. Thanks for watching the video and the clarifications!

Used his recto for 16 men of tane and hardhat area. He might’ve been experimenting during recording And live with the DG while he was getting used to it Used the roland instead of synth axe The UD stomp and the magic stomp was based on his settings for the rack mounted 8x D 1500s although he did he use a Roland SDE 2000 in place of one of the Yamaha D1500s towards the end of using the rack 12:42 Which I have from his studio from the late 90s At one point, he used up to 10 five and five He used them in live mode where you could set three presets-one per foot switch So he had 30 presets 15 clean and 15 lead presets available (Including any swell, option) at any given moment for him to use and he didn’t like things on the floor so he put them up above the rack -so it wouldn’t clutter his space on stage

Thanks for this - I didn't know about flashing the MagicStomp AG and Bass. I could prattle on, but one thing to mention is that it is desirable to cut the bass on the amp model, so the distortion is tighter, then you can add the bass balls back with an eq after the amp model. AH used a parametric EQ after the DG-1000. There is probably a way to do that on the MStump. I wish it had MIDI, so patch changes could be coordinated. And yes, the DG-80 was heavy as hell. 🥴

Did not know u do not need a laptop to edit stuff. Though I did the editing on my laptop many years ago. Been playing with moonwalk, every breath u take and rich stereo delay, this is a factory preset - don't know who made these patches? . Though out of the default presets I like the battery amp 0ne best. Though 1 tip let it rest every 15 minutes to avoid temperature issues,or switch effects off if you go for a break. Will look at your patches. Updated my presets OK, I get into it. There is a 64 bit driver for windows 7 which works with windows 8.1. Install in x compatible mode but keep it connected to the MS. Very easy. But it did not work for me as I had effects off. Scratched my head, put effects on and it worked. Update 2 To move patches like AH lead you have to copy each patch individually, then it paste it your own library. So it takes a couple of hours. But the download with this video has Alan's chorus and lead, and 3 vintage delay, with extra presets using 8 band parellel delay created by video uploader. The leads AH and doubler preset made by video uploader, thanks give him a thumbs up and subscribe do seem to work for another brick in the wall solo. Update 3 The John 5 presets are official and there are 10. But each preset has to be added individually. So it will take some time. Update 4 It does have many unofficial presets, like purple haze which seems to sound true, every breath u take, invincible sun.

I'm a little confused. You have referred many times to his delay sound. Are you including his multi-delay chorus sound? He definitely used the multiple delays to create his chorus sound. He was very clear and specific about that in a Guitar Player magazine interview many years ago. He was the reason I began using multi-voice choruses instead of vintage style/single voice chorus. Maybe this is being nit picky, although I don't mean it that way. He definitely used multiple delays to create his chorus sound, even though it was surprisingly subtle for having eight voices.
@TurrigenousOfficial
@TurrigenousOfficial 8 ай бұрын
Yeah perhaps that's it. From the 6 MS he used, one was labeled "Chorus". Thats what he used for his clean guitar chord playing. It was still the 8 band delays, but with short lead times. They were included in the UD stomp and then carried over to the MS. The other was a lead sound, the other was "UD Echo" which is was swells. The other was delay for his lead sound. The last 2 were for FX and the other a backup.

No bragging…. I knew Allan . His sound was 90% his power solid state amp. I think it was 200w ? And lots of boxes made by him witch were mostly filters I didn’t understand too much of what he explained to me….. he wasn’t into gear much He just loved his DeLap which had an enormous neck with a 20 radius. He also had almost 99% of the time an TC old line booster and rack TC eq (green) from the 80 90s ….. but again he depended of his little crazy boxes witch is a shame no one took the time to ask him what all that was. I’m not engineered so that I just know that he had that , the power amp and the right filters to connect everything in the same right impedance or whatever the word is lol 😂 And one pedal dedicated for ever effect he wanted . I did see him playing in Texas sometime around 2003 using two DG stomps and two volume pedals but I can’t remember if he brought anything else with him. @@TurrigenousOfficial ...hummm... never thought about being designed for piezo systems...Never tested the low/high input switch as well. Actually always thought that doesn't make much sense since I was running a od pedal before magicstomp, to apply it only as my delays, and that was when I noticed that engaging the delays, the volume drop off was too big to be ignored...(imagine during a solo ) Anyway.. thanks for your answer and attention ! If I get to solve that, I let you know !!! Claudio, from Brazil..

@@TurrigenousOfficial By the way, when playing acoustics, using the mic emulation to smooth out that harsh piezo sound we all disgust, this unit works perfectly fine. When doing so, I keep the same preset the whole time so there's no volume issues...

So why upgrade the firmware??
@TurrigenousOfficial
@TurrigenousOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Upgrading the firmware to 2.10 will allow you to control and modify the patches directly on the unit, although its a bit of a nuisance. Without it, you can only modify it by hooking it up to a computer, which is easier, but hard to do if your computer cant recognize it or open up the sound editor.

@@boimesa8190 Mostly its delays. The lead sounds I think we're actually crafted by Allan as well, which at the time I didn't know. This unit just really combines the DG guitar amp sounds and UD delay sounds into one pedal. The UD delay if still pretty expensive, where as this can do the same thing but almost 1/5th the price.
