I think this illustrates the difficulty in sounding like John F. His style of playing, his sound and his philosophy all seems to be about the space in between notes, the space in between sounds and tones. generally what's not being played seems more important to him and what makes him so incredible than what is being played. The relationship of what's not being played to what the rest of the band is playing and what the listener's imagination is filling in the blanks with is the key to him.

the problem is, 90% of frusciante's tone is from his hands. the total and utter emotion that man put into every single note is on another level. it's more than just pedals and amps.
@RodrigoPiccoli4 жыл бұрын
Frusciante sounds comes from his hands 80% and the rest is the gear. His guitar tech said that. And watching both videos this makes sense. Even if you try busting the bank, doesn’t sound like him. Of course. With any strat you can get closer but that last step is just almost impossible. And both videos are missing the Chorus sound. He uses a lot. E the moog pedals too. But it was a good video and a good try!
@pegglethon45533 жыл бұрын
Then his tech is wrong, because most of the tone doesn't come from your hands if it's being run through an electronic/valve power device. He can sound check and fine tune John's gear all he wants, and he will always know more about his kit than any of us, but that's traditionalist exaggerated bullcrap just like "playing 'till your fingers bleed". If you can get the tone bare from just the amp and guitar, and maybe the pedalboard, then his tone isn't 80% his hands. It's the gear.

The modern Les Paul Standards I believe have a push pull pot that does that 'out of phase' stuff.

Another awesome vid and without commenting on how well it soulds like JF or not as I'm in no way qualified to do that.. :P One thing I can comment on is all the sounds like vids have the benefit of back and forth commentary, brainstorming about the gear etc and that is exactly what's missing from the David and Goliath vids. The best things about your crew and the amazing content you all provide for us are the personalities and fun around the gear and music. I forget in which one but Capt. Lee even says at one point how they don't want to do straight up how to or product evals but have to keep the fun and banter. The D&G vids need more of that so they are more like the rest.

Much better job than the last one . Great stuff! Few things to add though - he used Seymour Duncan SS1's in his strat, the Boss CE1 (Chorus) was his main modulation pedal, and yeah the wah would have been better if you had the Ibanez in stock. But anyways thank you for revisiting it!! Big JF fan.. Just wish I could afford a silver jubilee :D sounds great !

Also, The secret about Get on top is the Boss Ce-1 pre-amp. There are some vids that some guys use it like an overdrive, and John uses like this. The Original and the V2 Ibanez Wh10 have an Volume boost, that is converted in Overdrive with this pedal. also, he mentioned something about use this pedal in this song with the bass mode (bass frequency range).

At get on top, I personally think that the sound of the main riff depends a lot of the right hand excecution and using the Brigde pickup position As ALWAYS: great job, Rabea and Matt :)

Frusciante used Seymour Duncan SSL-1's in his Strats, I played in a Chili's tribute band, our guitarist got Frusciante's tone with a Mexican Strat and the Duncan pickups (along with the Marshall amp and all the pedals)
@eoln_6 жыл бұрын
John Frusciante uses the Turbo mode on the Ds-2. Full volume (Compressed by the Ce-1), Distortion at 3 o'clock and Full tone, With amp settings Full Bass, 1 o'clock mid and 11 o'clock treble

If you’re talking about the one in February 2020, that wasn’t his pedalboard; it was a pedalboard that was at the venue there for him to use
@caseynewton8273 жыл бұрын
@@georgehale9471 I don’t disbelieve you, but how do you know?
@georgehale94713 жыл бұрын
@@caseynewton827 i read somewhere on a video of the performance that it was either dave navarro’s rig (he was using the same board) or it was just there for him to use at the venue, i can’t remember which for sure; but if you look closely and you know johns pedalboard from the mid 2000s you can see it’s not his just by looking at the pedals/layout. considering also that the wh10 along with the ds2 is the staple of his sound and has been since 1988, it’s unlikely he’d be without one if it was his board.

Just rewatched both videos and honestly You didn't do THAT bad on sounds like without busting the bank. You came close on some and less on others, but so much of John's sound comes from his playing and the phrasing used. This try did really tick most of the sound like boxes though! Great job!
@sjlacey658 жыл бұрын
Great job guys, you took it all on board well and produced some tones and playing that are as close as is reasonable
