I’ve heard of this band but don’t know any of their music. The guitar tone in this video is (surprisingly?) good. That octave stuff @9:40 is especially delicious. Dang, that Catalyst with/without the Golden Plexi sounds as good or better than a lot of boutique/high-end tube amps.

The solo on “If you Tolerate This” was recorded by James on a blue Rickenbacker 360/12, but he did always use his trusty white Custom for this song live. The lead on Motorcycle was actually played by the late Richie Edwards on a 70s Thinline Telecaster, but again, JDB played it live on his Custom! Would love to see a sound like of the other two Welshies ‘Phonics and Feeder (especially the latter). Grant Nicolas is a big offset user, so I expect some Squier CV Jazzmaster action. The bass department would be even more interesting, as Taka uses some interesting custom made stuff.

I doubt Richey played lead on Motorcycle Emptiness. He mimed most of the time in live shows and only contributed guitar on two tracks in the entire three studio albums they did while he was in the band. He could write a fantastic lyric, he could look good on stage but he could not play guitar well and certainly not to the standard of lead on Motorcycle Emptiness.

@@danielthompson4463 He never played lead on any track and only played rhythm on La Tristesse and No Surface out of all the 3 albums he was involved in. However, the myth that he never played live was trotted out like a Sex Pistols line, even by Richey himself - as a guitarist, I have watched countless live videos stretching from performances in 91 to 94, and after studying his playing, I can confirm that he plays everything in the right places. Why he's turned down so low is only known by the band, but it could be that James didn't want to be distracted by his mistakes, or he never felt confident enough to be high in the mix. You can hear his guitar clearly on Reading 92, Glasto 94 and The Astoria 94

They were stood in front of a white LP-type guitar at the start and I thought they were gonna go for that which is why they were stood there, esp. like it might have been one of those cheaper brands like Eastcoast that Dave digs. But I think from some digging on the Andertons site that it is a Sire Larry Carlton and that's only a little bit cheaper than the Epi - obvs an Epi is spot-right-on for an LP custom bar the headstock, so...just a rambly comment from me 😁

Love this, of the nineties bands from that era, it would be the Manics or Suede that would be the bands I love the sound of. So in the future it would be great to hear a Sounds like Suede (either Butler era or Oakes era), or from the late nineties to present Sounds like The Living End please, be interesting to see Cici get a budget double bass?

Never heard of this band, I'm old- but their name reminds me of a guy who walks the streets in a town here near where I live. He has a huge radio on his shoulder- walks around with it up to his ear- but there's never any music playing from it. We have no idea what exactly he's listening to, but he says it's God, and every once and awhile he stops, sets the radio down, and decides we all need to hear what God has been telling him- so he starts preaching. Thing is, usually there's no one there- he's preaching to the wind, and he's very passionate and animated about it. If you stop and listen to him, he just goes on like nothing changed- never acknowledges you're there or anything. And when the sermon is over, he hefts the radio back to his shoulder and off he goes. I have no idea where he lives, if anywhere- I just see him walking, all the time. But he has to eat some where I guess, and sleep- he probably has a home somewhere in town.

Seen The Manics a few times first time way back in ‘92 at the Town and Country Club. I remember when they first came out they were really slated by the music press as being Clash rip offs mostly I think for their choice of wearing self painted slogan shirts. That was the reason that Richy Edwards carved For Real into his arm during a Steve Lamacq interview

For The Holy Bible, Bradfield supposedly recorded using a Jazzmaster, which explains the sharp twangy guitar tone on that album, which is hard to achieve on a Les Paul with stock humbuckers.
