Geoff's solos are never a capella reserving that for VoicePlay. Loved Simon and Garfunkel's version from back in my high school/(college days (Patterns)). Listened to Disturbed version and for me the anger was so overpowering that aside from listening to it a couple more times, I put that one away. Heard Pentatonix, nice, and then this one came out. I love it, from the piano, to the Geoff clones in the background singing, from the bass to the tenor range (maybe especially the tenor parts). Thanks for your reactions. Mike was grinning most of the way through this one.

Good reaction guys. I liked the original song as well. Then came along came an angry, Disturbed version of this song. Now Geoff has covered it in his earth rumbling way. ‘Who”

What you are experiencing is called a Geoff Quake, not to be confused with the Mitch Slap, by PTX. Also, I have said it before, and will say it again, Goeff isn't human, he is a Bass God!

Geoff did a somber version instead of an angry. But there was still hope in there as well, that things might change and aren't set in stone.

Definitely a pessimistic song arranged and done by a hopeful optimist.

Such a beautiful cover. So melancholy and sad, but there is a light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. This song literally touches my soul and makes me cry every time I listen to it. There just are no words to properly describe how it makes me feel.

I LOVED the Disturbed version. I agree with you about the original. So you have at least one person on your side. 😄

I've heard the versions of this song described like this: the original S&G version was giving a warning of where we might end up if nothing changed our direction. The Disturbed version was ANGRY that we hadn't paid more attention to the warning. Geoff's version is a more somber and restrained version, mourning that we hadn't paid more attention to the warning, but all hope isn't gone yet. I certainly don't think you have to defend your choice if you like one version more than another. It's the sign of a remarkable song that it can be interpreted in so many extremely different ways, but still remain recognizable as the same song.

This is the first time (so far) Geoff has sung harmony without showing the Geoff clones. He is an amazing singer, arranger, and artist. I love everything he does. Subscribed in anticipation of more Geoff and Voiceplay. You will love the one they just dropped last week, trust me!

I think it's because the nature of the song, message wise, works best visually solo. That's my take on it anyway.

Is the Sound of Silence angry? It's sad, like how Geoff sang it. Loved your facial reactions.

As Geoff has said when he arranges a song he listens to the original first then finds as many cover version as he can so he doesn't copy what others have done. Then he figures out what can he bring to the song.

It is the most haunting version of the song I ever heard. That I think was his intent, not an angry version, but a sad reminder we've all been there at some point!

The original, by Simon and Garfunkel, was a warning. More recently Disturbed's version appeared to convey anger that the warning had not been heeded. Geoff has re-imagined it yet again with a delivery that conveys sadness, yes, but more that that; to me it displays anguish, despair even, that people are still not listening.

Mid-song onwards you can see it as a warning. An outcry against injustice everyone interpreted because of Vietnam and it's aftermath. Simon himself said after countless remarks on it to interpretet what you will. So he neither confirmed nor denied it. But first half? A lonesome person in his room (likely a student), who has the silence as his companion. Walks outside contemplating things and daydreaming/ having a vision, likely of wrong things in society and by extent war and politics. Only from Disturbed onwards it's truly straight up anger and anti-war message. Because the original is more philosophical, I always like the original the best and now second the Geoff's one.

@@embran8486 I see it even more appropriate to talk about the people not listening in this age of people addicted to their movile phones. Living separate lives whilst apparently surrounded by others. Silence, like a cancer, grows.....

I always love a great bass or baritone voice, but his in particular is great. I love him with the band VoicePlay. His part in Tennessee Whiskey is epic.

Geoff's videos are not Acapella. He was actually playing the piano. And the other instruments he uses in his videos are from the computer. Voiceplay however is all Acapella except in Warriors and Nothing Else Matters. And Hoist The Colours.
@embran8486

Many of the Geoff ones with his clones are considered A capella. They provide it for him. Plus some vocal teachers/ music arrangers reacting comfirmed an added instrumental doesn't erase the song for being A Capella. As long as the vocals stay true to the style. This Sound of Silence? Yeah, that isn't A capella.

@@embran8486 Geoff has said himself that he is not Acapella on his channel. Because he does use a wide variety of instruments and extra sounds in his videos. Also he said that if he wants to do Acapella he has Voiceplay for that. So he chooses not to be. If you could see his arrangements computer he has a multitude of various sounds and instruments on each that are not human made. Geoff knows how to beatbox. He taught Layne way back in 2003 when Scott Porter left the group. Scott was their original beatboxer. Geoff jokes and says in chats he's not very good at anymore but when he's looking for a question or comment to read he's beatboxing at the same time. Not the big sounds like in videos. Just little ones. And btw... I've seen his arrangements several times on Patreon. And I've seen Layne's. Quite different. Geoff's is more intricate and has way more to it. Especially in Ghost Riders. OMG. That board was filled with various sounds sound effects and instruments. But in the others there there but not as much. Yes. Acapella can use an instrument here and there. But 99% it's Layne. With Geoff it's 100% instruments. And I don't see how using his clones makes it Acapella. He sings each clone with the same sounds and music as himself. It is him singing. Him doing everything.
@embran8486

@@ronsbrat525 Some are A Capella even if he denies it. Geoff denies plenty including him being a bass. Best example the one. God rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, though i sure would consider White Christmas, Headless Horseman and Ghost Riders also. The clones there have each a highlight of their own while the rest backup sings their harmonies, switching high and low.

@@embran8486 He says that because in reality he isn't bass. He's baritone. That's why he can go way high and way low. But for the video descriptions he says bass because that's what everyone else calls him. As far as those you named on his channel. They were only a few and as he progresses he adds more and more instruments and sounds. Sound of Silence isn't Acapella. He added all those extra sounds that isn't human made. And the piano. In chorus in high school he was tenor. At Disney World and Universal Studios he was baritone. He had voice coaching when he was younger. He said lots of practice and training is why he can sing extremely low. If you listen to early Voiceplay videos you can tell when he went low it wasn't as smooth as now. He didn't know how to get the deep richness until he met Tim Foust. He even said that he has to warm up his throat for several days before recording to get it that low. It's not natural like baritone is.

Don't feel bad Ginger. I watch a bunch bunch bunch of reactors and alot of them prefer Disturbed. However I myself side with Mike and preferred Simon and Garfunkel. Until I heard this one. Geoff supercede both of them.
