Geoff Castellucci is one of the best bass singers around right now, and it's a shame that he's not better known. Not only were all the vocals you heard in that video his (he has a five octave range, and he tends to use a lot of it in most of his songs), he also created the vocal arrangement. He does his own video conceptualization, and if he's only working with still cameras then he and his wife, Kathy, are often the entirety of the video crew. When he needs a steadycam, or a specific set, he'll use Pattycake Productions, a video production studio co-owned by a current and a former VoicePlay member- VoicePlay being an a cappella group for whom Geoff sings bass. More about them later. Another VoicePlay member does his lighting work and once the video is shot, Geoff does all the video editing work himself. Just about the only things he doesn't do himself are steadycam work, costume makeup, and the final audio mix; all of these are subbed out to other folk who are excellent in their respective fields. As far as what to watch next of Geoff's, all I can say is you won't find a bad song. He has a knack for tapping into the essence of a song, then transforming it into something entirely his own while still retaining whatever made the song so familiar and iconic. His cover of Bill Withers' hit Ain't No Sunshine is a good example- Geoff's version comes across as almost a remix of that song, with fascinating vocal elements reminiscent of electronica. But it's still completely recognizable, with many of the same iconic moments (a few Geoff-ified), and the emotion is the same as the original, only dialed up a few notches. Absolutely masterful. So as I mentioned, Geoff is the bass vocalist for VoicePlay, an a cappella group that is easily on par with Pentatonix and Home Free. Like Geoff, VoicePlay are 100% independent artists, so they haven't benefited from the promotion PTX and Home Free have received in the past. Layne Stein- vocal percussionist, baritone and co-owner of Pattycake Productions- creates roughly half of the vocal arrangements for VoicePlay, and does all the associated video work, just as Geoff does. Geoff handles nearly the other half, with a rare few songs being passed on to either a trusted arranger or Eli Jacobson, VoicePlay's tenor and video lighting genius. Once you've recovered from Geoff's abilities, it's well worth your time to swing over to VoicePlay and acquaint yourself with the rest of the guys. I've long called Geoff VoicePlay's 'gateway drug', because he tends to draw people in with his absolutely jaw-dropping vocal talents. But I've got a secret to tell you- every one of VoicePlay's members are vocal monsters, just like him. And their approach to a cappella is different than anything you've ever heard before.

It truly is remarkable how outstandingly talented EVERY single member (and featured artists) are in their own right, let alone when combined together in an a cappella group... Not a single member is more talented than the others, each one is on equal footing as the other. One of the things I love most about VoicePlay is how each person is given lots of moments to shine in their arrangements.

If there's one thing that Geoff and/or Voiceplay fans love as much as listening to the music, it's watching the expression on someone's face when they hear their first Geoff Note. Thank you for reacting! As for recommendations, I'd normally tell you to check out "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold," and that's definitely a wonderful song, but Halloween is coming up, many reactors are doing Halloween things, and Geoff and his group Voiceplay are here to help with that. There's virtually anything they've done from Nightmare Before Christmas, there's Geoff's Monster Mash or Ghost Riders In The Sky . . . but you could also wait and see if Geoff puts together anything special this Halloween. Because word is that something cool is coming.

Yes. Geoff and Voiceplay released their Halloween videos on their Patreons Saturday. They are absolutely amazing. Two very unexpected songs for sure. Geoff was supposed to collaborate with Pattycake Productions on their Halloween video. However, Voiceplay has a lot going on right now with 2 videos and an upcoming concert with Chicago November 17 & 18 in Ocean City NJ. They will be singing Chicago songs with them. So Geoff and Pattycake put it off until next year.

Love first-time reactions to Geoff! I haven't seen it in the comments, but all the voices you heard (solo, lead, and background vocals) are Geoff. Others have mentioned VoicePlay. You really need to hear some of their stuff as well. Geoff is one of a very few basso profundo singers that are "top tier." His low range (and upper range) are not "natural/ I mean they are not inherent ability. He has trained his voice over years to lower and raise his range. Someone mentioned A0 to Bb flat 5. A 0 is the lowest note on a piano. Yes. You will get so many suggestions for "what's next" that I won't weigh in. There are enough really good suggestions already. My only hint is to pick something you already know. I think that allows you to get "used to" Geoff and/or VoicePlay with music that is familiar. Of COURSE, you can also branch out to numbers that are new to you. That's part of the fun. Good luck with the rabbit hole you just dove into!!

Geoff didn't start doing solo work until Covid shut the world down. He is a founding member of the acapella group, Voiceplay, the bass, of course. I am a patron of Geoff and Voiceplay. For your next Geoff piece, I'll go for a classic, Sixteen Tons. It's the introduction that I had, and is the second most popularly viewed cover. Have the closed captions on when you react to it, he throws a little humor in. Trust me on that. I also recommend that you check out Voiceplay. They are independent, no label, no manager and do almost everything themselves. If you check the credits under the screen you will see that. Start with In the Air Tonight. Subscribed in anticipation of more Geoff and Voiceplay!

To coin a phrase, you ain't seen nothing yet. 😄 This video is a departure for Geoff, as he normally layers visuals as well as the audio so you can actually see him singing each part, but all the background vocals here are also him. He can go both lower and higher than he did here--his range is absolutely astounding. Please treat yourself to more of his videos (I recommend I See Fire just for a start) and when you've explored his solo work, he's the bass singer and a founding member of the a capella group VoicePlay, who've been making incredible music for over twenty years! They have far too many masterpieces to list, but their covers of Hoist the Colours, Nothing Else Matters, Valhalla Calling, In The Air Tonight and Creep are some covers performed by their current lineup that are not to be missed. Liked, subscribed and looking forward to seeing you discover more!

Welcome to Geoff's rabbit hole. 🙂 Interestingly, you chose the only one of his videos so far in which he doesn't visually "clone" himself in 4 or 5 different characters, often with different costumes and makeups (e.g. his versions of "Far over the Misty Mountains cold" and "I see fire", both from "The Hobbit" Trilogy, with same characters in both songs... Or "Ghost riders in the sky". BTW, he and Voiceplay just OWN Halloween, so be prepared, something is coming... 😁), each of which has his "character", attitude, and even voice. 🙂 He sings ALL the parts. All the voices in his videos are his, and he harmonizes with himself, which is a heck of a difficult task. 🙂 Now, what next... I'd second the suggestion by @CynicalTesuji of "Ain't no sunshine", but I'd also suggest the two videos from "The Hobbit" I mentioned above, in that order. That would allow you not only to appreciate his skills, but also to notice how much he grew in these past couple years. And both of them are GREAT songs. 🙂 Others I'd like to suggest are "Shenandoah", "Till then", "Man of constant sorrow", and, as we're approaching Christmas, "God rest you merry Gentlemen" and "White Christmas". But you can't find any "bad stuff" in his channel 🙂 Same for Voiceplay, the a cappella group he sings bass for. They're absolutely great. And another endless rabbit hole, as they are around since 1997 (oldest group around, I believe), when they were called "4:2:5". Check ANY of their videos, they're all good, in different ways forms and shapes. 🙂 Just subscribed in anticipation for more Geoff, Voiceplay, and maybe "The Bass Gang", another formidable a cappella group that just released the first video of their new series, "May the Bass be with you - vol. 3" 😉 See you next time!

@@jacquelinevanbierk Well, if you're looking for Halloween stuff, you've got your place. Voiceplay and Geoff just OWN Halloween 😅. Voiceplay has a series of Halloween songs from "Nightmare before Christmas" (This is Halloween, Kidnap the Sandy Claws, Oogie Boogie Song...), or from The Grinch (You're a mean one, mr.Grinch), and others that are just pure Halloween... I'd recommend "In the Hall of the Mountain King", yes, the classical instrumental from Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt". Super creative and hilarious. And "Ding dong - Hide and seek", ft. Lauren Paley. "Mounted Mansion" themed... But there's more. Geoff has his own Halloween repertoire... "Headless Horseman", "Monster Mash", "Ghost riders in the sky"... And he said that he started thinking of this year's Halloween video as soon as he released LAST year's one, so I think it'll be EPIC. 🙂 All of them show their peculiar sense of humour... What Huldra Draco called "Their special brand of dumb". I just LOVE their humour. To get a glimpse of it you could watch Voiceplay's "Golden Hour"... So sweet and cute and yet somehow "sweetly weird". 🙂 Can't wait.

I really liked your reaction. Everyone, including me, reacts this way when they hear Geoff or VoicePlay for the first time. They are the acapella theater kids. They like to dress up and act out the songs. Geoff has a 5 octave range from A0 to Bb5. He uses a subharmonic singing technique for deep voices. My favorite video of his is 16 tons, because I saw it for the first time and was impressed. He is one of those rare singers who has a huge range and sounds just as beautiful in the highs as he does in the lows. I recommend two underrated songs to check out for his higher range. One is Blackbird by the Beatles. The other is High and Dry by Radiohead.

Once you fall in, you'll never want to find your way out :) As for recommendations, my personal favorite of Geoff's solo work is Ain't No Sunshine, which completely transformed the original into something magical. It's a little tougher to pick a favorite of VoicePlay, as they cover such a huge swathe of genres, but I'll do my best to pick my top 10: Nothing Else Matters Creep The Dragonborn Comes Oogie Boogie Song Halo Theme (be sure to watch the video all the way to the end credits, as there's a wonderful message that will give you great insight into who they are as human beings) The Mermaid Medley Hoist the Colors In the Hall of the Mountain King (PERFECT for Halloween season!!) Valhalla Calling I Can't Make You Love Me (have a box of tissues handy, as this one will break your heart) There's much, much more of course, but for a good starting point I think these are the best place to begin :) Great reaction and I can't wait to see more reactions to these incredible singers!

The really low bass noises in the background at the beginning of the song aren't Geoff singing, it's an instrument of some sort - his Patrons have access to the karaoke track, which is just instrumental, and they also appear there. All of the vocals you hear in his solo videos are Geoff, up to and including tenor range. Geoff is known for his subharmonic low notes, and while I think he hits two in this video, all of the rest of his low notes are done in chest voice. Of the bass singers currently on YT his voice is definitely my favorite, both for his low notes and the amazing resonance he gets into notes that Peter Barber, a reactor and professional opera bass singer calls "crazy low". Geoff is the bass singer for the a cappella group VoicePlay, who are known as "the theater kids of a cappella" for a good reason! Anything by them is highly recommended, as well as anything by Geoff. Since he didn't start making solo videos until the pandemic locked everything down, his solo catalog is much smaller than VoicePlay's, but he's putting out quality material every time. To hear Geoff show his range best, the two videos I would recommend are his covers of Blackbird and I See Fire. In Blackbird you'll see multiple "clones" of Geoff, all dressed alike, but in I See Fire, Geoff has gone with the VoicePlay style and dressed everyone differently, enough that some first-time reactors think it's actually different people! But it's all Geoff, and he uses the different versions to showcase his different ranges, from super-deep low notes up to tenor range.

If you don't yet know Geoff you're in for a treat. He's the bass singer and walking bass guitar for a capella group VoicePlay and does about half of their arrangements too. He has a range of five octaves and a wild sense of humour which isn't immediately obvious. Oh and that voice....like melted caramel. :) It gives me tingles in my thighs. Am I allowed to say that? At my age? I recommend hearing I See Fire for a very different look at him. But also his cover of Shenandoah is arguably the most beautiful thing ever. Oh and he also creates all the musical backing. Check out the credits - he does it all. More or less. And his arrangements are always unique and imaginative. No, no operatic training but he's been singing a capella with other VoicePlay members since middle school.

He wasn't operatically trained, but he did learn on the stage, and his theatrical performances really shine. You mentioned you'd love for him to sing a lullaby. I 100% agree. His audio narrations make me feel warm and ready for bed, even as he reads a spooky Edgar Allan Poe story, haha! The closest we get to a lullaby is "Til Then," a ballad from the Second World War about a soldier asking his girl to wait for him. He's actually singing it to his wife, and you see her slip him a note onto his piano at the very beginning. They're adorable! That song is sooooo soothing, it makes me want to slow dance with my husband. Another is over on VoicePlay, which I see many have mentioned and you've discovered already. (I'm going to watch that video next!) I adore their "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You" so much, I got permission to create a brass quintet version of their arrangement, and I hope to perform it next spring. Geoff's voice is like being wrapped in a velvet robe sipping hot chocolate on a rainy autumn night. Yet he's so versatile with that 5 octave range. He's a tenor rock god one moment, a terrifying dragon the next, a mournful lost soul, and a Viking war horn. The depth of his voice, which he barely explores here, actually once broke my headphones, yet the man can sing higher than I can. (Granted, I'm a contralto, but still!)

I haven't seen anyone mention some of Geoff's fun songs, such as Headless Horseman and Monster Mash. Another holiday favorite is his version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. He has also some fascinating informational videos on his channel such as How to Sing Low, parts 1 and 2, and How to Sing Really Low, plus How I Arrange Music For Voiceplay. There is also a very beautiful story about his wife's hearing loss: Hearing Loss (A True Story). Geoff is amazingly humble for such a talented man.

Anything Geoff is amazing. Also, I don’t know if someone said it, but in Geoff’s singles, he sings ALL the parts. And does all the production.

Geoff is the gift that keeps on giving. Any song by Geoff on his own, or in Voice Play are worthy of your time. I love all of Geoff's work, but his cover of I See Fire hits every single time. (I prefer it over the original) 😊

I love watching someone discover Geoff and VoicePlay for the first time! Geoff does his own arrangements and about half of the arrangements for VoicePlay. They are fantastic! Geoff has done a couple songs from The Hobbit movies, "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold" and "I See Fire." I'd recommend both of those from him. For VoicePlay, just pick something you like and see what they've done with it. They've got everything from Disney to pop to rock. They go theatrical too so it's fun. For that, maybe go with "Valhalla Calling" or "Hoist the Colours." It's hard to go wrong with these guys, lol. ❤

Please explore more Geoff Castellucci, I KNOW you continually be amazed at what a man with five octaves can do when they both love the music AND creatively interact with the art of music!! you can explore Geoff both as a member of Voice Play A Capella, and when he sings five part harmony with himself... Sixteen Tons and Shennendoa are perefect examples but so much to explore and enjoy

Oh, fun, a Geoff newbie! I don't think he's operatically trained. He and his friends spent their younger years as singing characters at Universal Studios, Florida! From videos it seems like his voice has gotten stronger with time/age. Hear him power out the bass in "Valhalla Calling", a VoicePlay video (his group). Btw, another amazing bass is Tim Foust of Home Free; hear him on "My Church" or "So Long Dixie". VoicePlay and Home Free have a history of supporting each other. A cappella bros!

Geoff has only been doing this solo multitrack work since the 2020 shutdown stopped VoicePlay from touring. But you've got plenty of tracks to listen to. Many of them show off both his lows and highs. In the stuff on his personal channel, all the voices are his, unless you see someone else onscreen.

He has done a C0 and was still singing, actual understandable words. And just to hit the note and hold it, in one of the videos he did an A0. Geoff of Voiceplay, Tim Faust with Home Free, and Avi Kaplan was with Pentatonix now Solo career, are all Basso Profundo, singing below C1. Geoff and Tim have both blown speakers from holding sub base notes for so long. As to what else to react to, Oggie Boogie Man kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5PbnIKkqd9liaM. and to be honest the main Acapella groups right now: Pentatonix(3 Grammy awards), VoicePlay, and Home Free for the country influenced acapella. and be ready to be blown away.

Geoff "shows off" more when Layne does the arrangement, because Layne pushes him to do things he isn't sure if he can do, and then it turns out that he can. For example, when they did Tennessee Whiskey, Layne pushed Geoff to do the "runs" (sort of like vocal arpeggios) that he didn't think he could do. Left to his own devices, Geoff tends to do stuff he knows he can handle. A notable exception is the C1 at the end of Way Down, which he was inspired to do because Sumner did it when singing with Elvis.

How deep can he go? A0 How high? Bb5 I found him 2 Halloweens ago doing The Monster Mash. Then found he was an acapella bass with VoicePlay and the first video I heard of theirs was Hoist The Colours and from there, I listened to the videos that Geoff had done when Covid-19 stopped their touring. He started with the Bare Necessities and he's probably got close to 50 videos himself. His solos are not acapella, he does the instrumentals himself and supplements his vocals with somewhere between 3 - 4 clones of himself. See 16 Tons (Tennessee Ernie Ford), Way Down (Elvis), Man of Constant Sorrow (movie - Oh Brother Where Art Thou), Country Road (John Denver) and more. ALL of them so good. VoicePlay is acapella, has well over 800 videos and has been singing since 1997, back when they were school - started singing in middle school and in high school where they started a group called 4:2:Five. Geoff and Layne (VPs beatboxer) are original members. The others have gone on to acting, Broadway, and productions. Back in 2010, Eli (rhymes with jelly) joined the group as a rock tenor, in 2019 Tony (baritone) wanted to start a production studio and he and Layne bought Pattycake Studios where most of VoicePlay's and Geoff's videos are done. In 2000, VoicePlay lost 1 of the original members Earl, for personal reasons after 23 yrs, and another, J None (baritone) to the US Navy for a 5 yr stint in their chorus. He's comes back when he can to participate in VPs videos - the first after bootcamp was Friends on the Other Side, and this year he was in Nothing Else Matters (Metallica), Valhalla Calling (Miracle of Sound - who VoicePlay's cover was the most creative anyone else had done and raised 10 alehorns to them), In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins). When J None and Earl left, VoicePlay auditioned and chose Cesar as a baritone/tenor and filled in the remaining slot with various superb singers. It gives them a lot of leeway to make each version fit their image of what they want it to be. They are under contract to no one and Geoff and Layne usually alternate between them to create their version of the song. Eli had done Eleanor Rigby and recently did Creep and it was good.
