Have you seen Geoff's interview with Elizabeth Zharoff? He talks about how he does an arrangement, and he said he listens to other covers so he doesn't do what everyone ELSE does. I think he NAILED this one. NO ONE else has done some of those chord variations.

What I like is that you are not a one and done reactor. You seem to realize while others don't that you need to hear more than one song from someone to get a feeling for who that artist is. Your in-depth analysis and your sense of humor are appreciated by this old guy.
@candilunsford2878 Жыл бұрын
I was waiting for you to do this one. FerretMom said earlier that the S&G version was the warning, Disturbed's was the anger and Geoff's the sorrow. Geoff has the uncanny ability to yank out all the feels of a song and smack you in the face with them. I'm a huge fan of his bass, but I'm really liking hearing him use his full range too. The background music/percussion/vocals just kept ramping up the intensity throughout the whole song. That final verse was amazing! He's just so talented and IMHO one of the best arrangers in the business, followed closely by Layne. I can't wait to see what's next!

Geoff has said that he doesn't need to warm up his voice as he's always singing. And Kathy would vouch for it. She has said that she always knows where he is indoors as she can hear him singing. :) You do know that there is no issue with copyright with Geoff and VP I suppose? They never block. But stopping for comment is a different thing.
@randiskye4444 Жыл бұрын
They don't block, but will copyright claim, except for fair use. That's why reactors who analyze with pauses and explanations fare better than "watch someone else's product they've invested thousands of dollars in producing, and increase my views and revenue instead of theirs" type reactors. Jen, Peter Barber, Elizabeth Zharoff, etc. value add and so earn their portion.
@christinestromberg4057 Жыл бұрын
@@randiskye4444 It is normally record companies who do that: invest thousands, and have copyright issues. I don't think Geoff or VoiecePlay have thousands to invest. The patrons do a great job but I doubt it runs into thousands. They pay copyright for every song they cover and Geoff has said that their Boy Bands in 5 Minures has never earned them a cent and never will because it cost them so much in royalties to produce. You can't put them into the same bracket with artists who are signed to recording companies.

I remember clearly the first time I heard this song. I couldn't believe anyone could combine these lyrics with this melody and sing it so calmly. Geoff does remarkable job of this cover. He captures the feeling I had on hearing this. This was the beginning of my love of Simon and Garf. And it was when I began to love the music of my youth. That was a long time ago. This cover resonates deep.

I can kind of understand Geoff's reaction to this. I don't know if you saw the video where he talks about Kathy (his wife) and her deafness, but I would imagine it's been a struggle to deal with unwanted silence, especially for a musician. He has handled both this song and that topic with class and aplomb.

It's hard, perhaps unfair, to compare performances because each artist brings their own perspective and strengths to a work. I think I still prefer Simon and Garfunkel's original version and (was surprised!) Disturbed's cover was equally good. The Pentatonix cover and Geoff's (this one) are good, just not as good, not as impactful. I feel it is a high bar to meet. Good analysis as ever and it's always a pleasure.

Could the poster be Brenda Russell's setting of "The Color Purple"? I remember a scene where Shug wears a red dress and holds a piece of birthday cake. Thanks for your thoughts on this one. As this gets more and more covered, the space of "unique takes" gets smaller, but I think Geoff managed to carve out a niche for himself by making it a post-disaster lament, as distinct from the S&G original warning, Disturbed's rage we didn't hear the warning, and Pentatonix's leaning into choral colors.

Those low backing notes are really powerful with a subwoofer. Maybe I have my sub cranked a bit high, but when there are any little scraps of cardboard (thanx to my cats using their cardboard scratching pad next to the sub) on the floor in front of the sub the scraps of cardboard dance around. Also when the cats are investigating, the start of the low notes makes them jump. My wife finds the low notes relaxing, she says it feels like they are massaging her brain. Does anyone know what waveform they are? I'm thinking simple sinewaves, but I can't be sure.

This is a very good cover, but not my favorite. I did enjoy the BV Geoffs when they came in with that very low occasional rumble that just tickles your brain. The original came out when I was in college and it will always be my favorite. My favorite cover is the duet from Peter Hollens and Tim Foust which is on Peter's channel. And The Hound and the Fox do a very nice version with Adam Chance. Neither the PTX nor the Distrubed versions made a positive impression in me. Far too theatrical and noisy for this (mostly) soft song. Loved your reaction and the insights to technique, as usual. Have a great weekend! Oh! I like your new poster. @Katie-Didn-t11 ай бұрын
THANK YOU!!!! I was starting to feel like I was going insane and no one else could hear the off-key note he holds at the end of the second line for “again”. I’m not sure what his deal is. He can obviously carry a tune and stay on pitch… ALMOST through an entire song. I just don’t know if he can’t hear it when he goes sharp/flat or can’t/doesn’t want to re-do a video before putting it up when he does it. If you notice, he NEVER drops any sour notes in his more heavily produced songs where he layers over himself? (Just an explanation: I just call any bad notes that are bad for any reason, on any instrument, including vocals cords, sour notes. Kinda like fruit- if it’s not good, it’s bad, does it matter if it was not ripe yet, overripe, moldy, eaten from the inside by a worm, or started fermenting? No. It’s just bad and not good). I don’t know if he’s trying harder because he HAS to harmonize with himself or if it’s auto tune (I REALLY REALLY hope not), but it’s still a problem. He drops a sour note in House of The Rising Sun on the very first word which threw me off so bad (because I thought the first word was setting the key for the rest of the song but it was the only note that was OFF key for 2 lines) that it took a while for me to recover and catch up with what he was singing… then dropped another in the 3rd or 4th line, I lost track because of being thrown off by the first word being off-key. I have so much trouble understanding the contradiction of this man’s pitch that I can’t appreciate anything about his singing except that he has an excellent voice. Which just makes me more frustrated because IF HE CAN SING WHY DOES HE KEEP DROPPING 1-3 SOUR NOTES/SONG? It literally hurts my ears like nails on a chalkboard or when someone screeches in your ear as a not-funny joke to scare you. I’m not trolling here, I’d truly appreciate answers if anyone has them about what his deal is with it? I WANT to listen to his songs but I’ve had too many “jump scares” from the sour notes and I’m afraid to try it anymore. This was actually my last try, when he hit “again” so badly off-key and just held it without even trying to correct it I couldn’t reach my phone and had to yank my headset off and LITERALLY listen to the sound of silence for a good 5-10 minutes to get my ears to stop hurting and my brain to stop playing it on loop back to me. I know I have perfect pitch and have some trouble hearing HOW FAR off a note is rather than just being off vs correct, but these sound sharp and flat enough for most people to be able to hear. So are people hearing and it doesn’t bother them? Is this some kind of test to see if people care if you’re in tune if your voice is good enough? Aaaand we’ve circled around to the beginning where I feel like I’m going insane.

For me it's the exact opposite. Not that S&G's left me cold at the time, but that I've heard it so often, it has lost much meaning for me. I didn't like the anger of Disturbed's.
