It is true the ball itself stays in place very well. But under extreme circumstances… My new kitten made a leap for the desk and managed to hitch onto the mouse pad, that I kept under the Huge for no good reason. Well, everything went overboard and upon contact with the floor, the ball popped out. Cat got to it first, and I couldn't find that ball for about a month! Meanwhile, I'm very satisfied with the trackball.

Any follow up, did you end up doing the ball replacement?

For the thumb thing, just press the 2nd button with the thumb joint/middle of your thumb and the first button with the tip of your thumb. Much easier.

Have been using a trackball since my Logitech Marble FX (1997). Then came the end of PS/2 and USB took over (like 20 years ago). PS/2 to USB never worked and nothing like the vertical feel of the MFX, so I settled for Logitech Marble Mouse. Now (2022) the MM driver is not supported beyond macOS Catalina (Windows 10 ok) and need to find a replacement that will work with my Wacom Cintiq 21UX and 3DConnexions Space Navigator. Still nothing like an MFX, but giving the Elecom Huge a try. Bought ceramic bearings with the Huge from Amazon ($60+). I am not noticing any drag so far and will wait to put in the bearings. Better test will be in the software Clip Studio Paint, Gimp, and Blender. Huge does feel great and very comfortable, but still miss the feel of the MFX. It was like holding a 3D object between your thumb and finger(s) so you could move it just how you needed to.

I've got this and after swapping the bearings and applying some silicon spray (to a paper towel, that I then wiped the bearings and ball socket with), it's much less stuttery than before. Still a bit, but definitely better. Also, I didn't really like the default layout of the buttons. I swapped forward/back, because the way my hand rests my thumb is closer to the "forward" button, but I almost always want to use "back" instead. I also moved middle mouse click, to right mouse and moved right click to button 8. I also set the scroll tilt to ctrl+pg up/dn, so I can easily switch between tabs. I haven't really found a use for buttons 6/7 because they're in a bit of an awkward spot, but I'm sure I'll find something eventually.

I've wanted to buy a trackball mouse for a long time. Would you recommend this over the Kensington Expert?

I've test driven every trackball mouse that there is. For super comfort, Elecom is the best. Their medium size are the best. I've tried all the Kensington and they all felt unconformable to me. On all Kensington my hand had to stretch all fingers wide apart all the time to be able to reach buttons and it's physically impossible to roll the ball and click buttons at the same time. You have to roll to target first, then get off the ball to reach buttons, but releasing the ball makes the pointer cursor jump off the intended target. With Elecom you can easily roll and click at the same time. My problem with logitech trackballs is that the roll ball is on the side forcing you to use your thumb to roll the ball. The ball being on top makes using your index finger way much easier, faster and efficient.

The sticking is definitely the biggest issue with the ELECOM. Everything else you could get used to, but the ball sticking during slow movements makes it nearly impossible for precision aiming. The quality of the ELECOM is also very disappointing, it feels extremely cheap and weightless. I returned the ELECOM after a week and decided to buy the SANWA GRAVI instead due to its similarity to the Microsoft Trackball Explorer. EDIT: After receiving the SANWA, I am very impressed; this is a very good trackball for the price. The ball on the SANWA moves much more smoothly than the ELECOM due to the higher quality ceramic bearings, the shape is more ergonomic, and the overall build quality is way better. The SANWA does use a relatively old optical sensor with a maximum DPI of 1600 or 2400 for the Bluetooth version, but this is a common issue with most trackballs nowadays.

how is the thumb scroll wheel? is it easy to use or is harder to use than the scroll wheel at the middle finger in the standard mouse design?

It's not bad! The muscle memory is weird at first but this track ball setup is pretty good. I think what really gets me, when switching back to it sometimes, is clicking the main mouse button with my thumb haha. Picks right up though 😁

Late to the party but for future viewers, I find the way I hold it, my thumb rests where the scroll wheel, left click, and forward buttons meet. It's fine for scrolling down, but a bit awkward for going up. I also found that middle clicking required me to tense almost my entire hand. Because of that, I rebound middle mouse to one of the ring finger buttons, and honestly I'm starting to prefer that. It's nice to not have to repeat the same motion to scroll long distances, and I don't have to worry about scrolling while trying to middle click anymore.

Definitely a replacement for the Microsoft trackball explorer. Have you seen the Ploopy trackball mouse?

I grinded off the butt part my Elcom huge where the bottom of my palm rest at to make it closer to the size of the Deft Pro and it's now perfect!

I notice that too. The very back edge of the Huge just drops off too soon. If it was longer and tapered close to desk level, I'd like it even better.

@@samtgodfrey I used a rotary tool to grid the butt off, to where the middle of my palm is where it starts to make contact with the mouse and both my index and middle finger perfectly lay on top of the ball. I first disassembled the entire mouse to mark where to grind off, making sure not to cross into areas that would conflict with the functions. STILL, modified, or not, it is without a doubt the best trackball mouse in history!! I've bought EVERYSINGLE high grade trackball mouse since the XP days, and this one is THE absolute winner! All others were either too small or too large, too bulky, not enough function buttons, the ball does not sit in the slot firm enough to make rolling smooth, the distance between the ball and buttons either too far apart or too close to each other.

Thanks, @@alwaysemployed656 That's good to know! I was thinking about trying that but wondered what's inside there! I'm still waiting for a tiny Torx set I ordered to open it up. Otherwise I love the thing!

@@samtgodfrey Oh, if you want to skip the teardown, since I already did it, the entire back where the bottom of your palm sits at is hollow inside, nothing sits inside that area. The circuit board is way deep in close to the rolling ball. But you are probably just like me and you want to peek what's inside, curiosity.

If I wasn't so mindlessly trying to learn Python and playing EVE Online, I'd have one up. Sorry about that :P I really like this thing, but for what I'm doing now - I haven't used it in a while. Highly recommend though if you're a dev, or traveling. I still need to do the bearings in it to the aftermarkets. Thanks for watching!

Hey, I got idea. They should put the trackball on the bottom that way you can just use it like a normal mouse!
