This song to be is one of the biggest criticism to the American (or western) way of life. Perfect little houses, car, job, trimmed hair and body, always friendly, shallow but nothing behind it but horror and ugliness. Wash away the rain could also be "wash away the tears". Also funny how two Christians didn't make the connection to the flood and Noah. Because good old angry god did wash away everything because it was fake and wrong and since he can't change human nature for some reason he had to change everything else and kill everyone. Which he should have seen coming a million years ago but that's another topic for another time ;) But ultimately it makes me sad because the black hole sun did take him in the end...and he did make my life more beautiful and this world and he might have been to pure for this world and how fucking ugly we are with each other. Evolution is trying every single possible different mindset to see if it succeeds in the world. This includes serial killers and very sensible pure people. I think Chris Cornell and George Michael were the later...and fame can be a fucking nightmare make no mistake about it. I keep hear Vin saying "They are living the dream of millions" Yeah? No they are living what other think to be a dream because they have no fucking idea. Everything comes with a price. Being exceptionally beautiful, being deformed, being gifted, being rich, being poor, being famous, being chosen by god or thinking you are, being an atheist and for some reason the grass on the other side always seems greener until you're actually there. People glorify and condems what the don't know at the same time, strange thing. But Chris Cornell had a way to make his world known to me and I it resonated with me. I don't give two fucks how some idiot calls the genre. Genres are for people with too much time on their hand and needy egos. The only genres I know are art, music and noise. Soundgarden was art.

"Grunge" was not what these Seattle bands wanted to be called. The industry came up with that moniker. The bands considered themselves rock bands with a mix of classic rock, metal and punk...even funk was infused. The industry was done with glam and poseurs. Their clothes are what people wear in the North West. It rains and the towns are surrounded by forest. It's not quite cold enough for your typical winter clothes, but never warm for long periods. The glam look of spandex and glitter doesn't go well with the lumberjack look. Soundgarden made some of the heaviest music, but also some of the most melodic. Chris was a fundamental part of so many bands during that time. Especially Pearl Jam. Great review guys.

Even though it's an industry term that has more to do with the image, I've always thought it fit the texture of the music. Not just with the stuff that's heavy on distortion either. Throughout the fairly wide variety of bands that were considered 'grunge', in many of the songs there's something, sometimes right there on the surface, sometimes underlying and subtle, which gives me the feeling that if I could actually touch the music, it would feel like the residue of humble beginnings and a hard day's work in some sort of grimy, earthy environment. It's that little something that distinguishes it from other rock sounds, and I love that about it.

Kurt Cobain was part of the Grunge movement not the reason for it. It was all apart of the Seattle Sound. Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam are all from there. It was a whole movement spawned from a rebellion against traditional, manufacturered rock bands from the 80's lil Bon Jovi and Poison

Melvin's and Soungarden I feel like really heavily pushed the grunge movement. Although heavily influenced by punk bands, and also the Who and Black Sabbath and whatnot, I feel like these guys had more of an influence on each more than anything and what they saw in the world around. I feel like grunge is best described as very raw and emotional music, at least in my mind

Sonic Youth really was a part of all that early de-constructured non-metal rock sound. pushing boundaries IS a good thing. but so much of the "grunge" term is thrown around like it was an actual genre - it was more of a movement, that which got absorbed by the mainstream. Ironically, Nirvana didnt blow up until they added Grohl on drums and adapted a more commercial, sellable, verse -chorus-verse formula. all of which was against what spawned the movement in the first place

I think grunge was more rebelling against society, rebelling against the music industry that would try to make artists act and look a certain way, rebelling against music industry manufactured bands. It was a murkier sound, high levels of distortion, feedback, fuzz effects, a fusion of punk and metal influences...no guitar solos. The entire scene was specifically tied to Seattle.
@0okamino6 жыл бұрын
The rebelling against society part was the punk aspect. What added to that was rebelling against the 80s, a decade that just adored itself and its slick image... So. Fucking. Much. Not that I can't find some nostalgia for the 80s, though. I mean, I'm not immune to sometimes donning the rose-colored glasses. :D

Hail from Seattle, the Emerald City. I grew up here in the 90s. Sound Garden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, etc were the soundtrack for my youth. Chris's voice was one of the ones that was in my head and ears during some of the hardest times of my youth. His wife had put on his tombstone "A voice of a generation" and surely he was. I felt like Chris was a soul brother to me, all his music, every song i could listen to and feel like I knew what he was saying, how he felt, and it was often h ow I felt. When he died I felt like I lost a brother, seriously... fucking seriously. Chris grew up a Catholic, in fact he went to "Christ the King Perish school", a few block from where I used to live. His experience with Catholics, much like my own, was not the best. So many were so fake. They were high and mighty 1 hr a week, mindlessly doing their elaborate rituals, mindlessly reciting ancient "creeds" they dont understand, etc, but step out the door and they were well, not the best people, very fake and hypocritical, and capable of doing some very heartless things to others with the idea "ill make up for it next sunday with a few hail marry's". Grunge was a name forced on the "genre" for commercial purposes. Most of the "grunge" musicians hated the label, most of the "grunge" kids hated it too, seattle herself hated it. The "grunge look" stemmed from the fact that, in the 80's, rock stars were these glamorous people with makeup, big hair, expensive cloths, etc etc. Seattle used to be a working mans town, not a lot of wealthy white collars, and no tech companies yet. So many were not very rich. So these bands coming out of Seattle were poor, many of the semi homeless. Their cloths shabby, unkempt, etc. The "come as you are" mentality.. We dont give a fuck if you dont have the designer jeans, expensive shoes, etc. were here to rock the hell out" They werent affraid of their feelings, 80's metal was all about sex drugs and rock and roll, a lot of sappy love ballads, the flashy pop singers, etc. Of course, it wasnt long until big companies found out they could commercialize off grunge, so they created the title so they could sell it, the Bon Marche'(now macies) sold pre-ripped jeans and flannel shirts for a premium, and the music became commercialized... which ultimately caused the collapse of it, since its whole "theme" was against the fake commercial bullshit. Chris was a beautiful, generous soul, and this song, all though far from my favorite of his, speaks to the fact he never felt like he could relate to this world, all the fake ass people, pasting on smiles and mindlessly sheeping their way through life oblivious to anyone or anything else exists but them... something I can relate to. And not in a self righteous way (never once do you here mention of himself being superior or above them in any way). "Call my name through the cream" COULD mean, everything around him, the world he doesnt understand, relate to, feel apart of, etc surrounds you like thick smothering mud... so perhaps he was hoping to hear someone else like him, call to him through the world of shit. "Heaven send Hell away, no-one sings like you anymore"... I seem to remember (though my memory from then is a bit hazy) reading back in the 90's in "Guitar World" magazine, that line referenced his mother, or grandmother used to sing him religious lullaby's when he was very young when he was going to sleep to send away the nightmares. Check out: Soundgarden "Rusty Cage" "Outshined" "Hands All Over" "Pretty Noose" "Slaves and Bulldozers" "Spoon Man" Audioslave: "I am the Highway" "Show Me How to Live" "Be Yourself" Temple of the Dog: "Wooden Jesus" "Times of Trouble" "Hunger Strike" Saw Hello 2 Heaven" "Call me the Dog" Chris Cornell: "Sunshowers" (that song has saved my life a handful of times)"All night thing" "The Promise" "When Bad Does Good" "You Know my Name" "The Keeper" "Nothing Compares (cover)" . Chris also did a lot of humanitarian work for children and war torn families across the world, always very humble, down to earth, gracious. He struggled with anxiety, depression, substance abuse, etc.. My soul brother, RIP, and I MEAN IN PEACE... and where ever we go, or come back to or whatever is on the other side , i hope we can jam out together and I can show you how much of an impact you made to me my brother!

I think the song about depression. Black hole sun is the solution that he desires because depression can seem incurable and unbearable. Hints Suicide is like a black hole it destroy you. He says he wants everyone to go away maybe because the people he cared or talk to didn’t understand how he feels and didn’t understand why he felt the way he felt. He’s not mad at the people really he’s probably frustrated that everyone around him doesn’t understand him. He watches the world in a perspective that makes him feel alone and everyone else seems different. He feels disconnected. The rain symbolizes he’s depression. Wash away the rain.... you should react to “be yourself “ it’s another good personal song from Chris Cornell. Also it’s like the old cartoons whenever someone’s sad they have a cloud on top of their head and it’s raining only on their head. Symbolism....:)

These bands were so different to me musically other than the fact that they were Such a Breath of Fresh Air to the many repetitious Hair bands of the 80s. WOW, Chord changes Again, Lyrics that actually mean something, and Vocalists that can actually Sing (especially Cornell, Staley, and Vedder!!). Again, I'm now 57 years old, and heard many Rock Vocalists since the 60s. Robert Plant was Always Number One to me followed by Steven Tyler (talking only about Males), then I heard Chris Cornell and his Over 4 octave range!! That floored me! Also, the video is supposed to be disturbing. Cornell has said the idea was if you made a video on LSD what would it look like? That's what they tried to do.

I love this band. I remember on my college days that we talked a lot about Grunge, many of the guys liked Alice In Chains better but I always was a Soundgarden guy (even when my first favorite band was Nirvana). All this guys were so talented, Cornell had an awsome voice, I love Kim Thayil style (the solo on this song is a bit random but I love it) plus Ben Sheperd and Matt Cameron complemented each other so well, this guys were just amazing. You should give "Head Down" and "Blow Up The Outside World" a chance. Please react to "Nothing Is Not" by Morbid Angel and "In Their Darkened Shrines" by Nile.

I think if you did a song like Jeremy by Pearl Jam you would have to watch the video in order to get the meaning behind the song since you don’t do any research ahead of time.

Brian Urbano I think Jeremy’s lyrics are pretty straightforward.

Loved the vocalists in the grunge era. It was one of the biggest influxes of new, unique, incredible vocalists on the rock scene that I can remember. I'm not sure if y'all are up for doing cover songs but Chris Cornell's cover of Prince's Nothing Compares to You is epic level stuff.

They should do Fell On Black Days, Limo Wreck, or The Day I Try To Live from their Superunknown record! Love to hear their opinion and see their reaction to any of the songs I mentioned!

The three best of that album imo too. Good suggestion.

Some other great Soundgarden songs to check out in no particular order: Let Me Drown, Fell On Black Days, Outshined, Pretty Noose, Rusty Cage, Burden In My Hand, Black Rain and Blood On The Valley Floor. Which vocalist do you guys prefer from the "Grunge" era? While I think the singers from Seattle's big 4 are all great vocalists/songwriters, I think Chris Cornell and Layne Staley were both other worldly and be happy we have the opportunity to enjoy their music in perpetuity!

Regarding “Black Hole Sun”, Cornell stated: It’s just sort of a surreal dreamscape, a weird, play-with-the-title kind of song. Lyrically it’s probably the closest to me just playing with words for words' sake, of anything I’ve written. I guess it worked for a lot of people who heard it, but I have no idea how you’d begin to take that one literally." In another interview he elaborated further, stating, It’s funny because hits are usually sort of congruent, sort of an identifiable lyric idea, and that song pretty much had none. The chorus lyric is kind of beautiful and easy to remember. Other than that, I sure didn’t have an understanding of it after I wrote it. I was just sucked in by the music and I was painting a picture with the lyrics. There was no real idea to get across."

Fuck i love this song. It is so good. Apprently he got the idea, the soun, and most of the lyrics in his head during a car ride home, when he arrived he wrote it out in a few minutes and that was most of it done. So many great songs are just made so fast, and are so perfect. To me, that is a real musician.

Cornell said that he thought of the song title when he misheard a news broadcaster and realized that the idea of a black hole sun was very contradictory and weird, and decided to work with the idea
@beachside14 жыл бұрын
Heres what Chris Cornell said about Black hole sun...I wrote it in my head driving home from Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, a 35-40 minute drive from Seattle. It sparked from something a news anchor said on TV and I heard wrong. I heard 'blah blah blah black hole sun blah blah blah'. I thought that would make an amazing song title, but what would it sound like? It all came together, pretty much the whole arrangement including the guitar solo that's played beneath the riff. I spent a lot of time spinning those melodies in my head so I wouldn't forget them. I got home and whistled it into a Dictaphone. The next day I brought it into the real world, assigning a couple of key changes in the verse to make the melodies more interesting. Then I wrote the lyrics and that was similar, a stream of consciousness based on the feeling I got from the chorus and title

Great song and video. Kinda hard to understand when you look at it from 25 years later. I mean, 90's grunge was always known to be kinda eclectic and strange at times. Anyway, please try and react to other Soundgarden songs like Fell On Black Days and The Day I Tried To Live also on the same album as this song (Superunknown)
