Temple of the dog was a side project started by Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell as a tribute to his former roommate Andrew wood, the vocalist of Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990 just before the release of their first album. Mother Love Bone featured two future Pearl Jam members, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. Chris approached them with the intention of releasing a couple of songs he wrote as they were figuring out how to continue without Andrew. Jeff and Stone were trying to recruit members to form a new band and eventually found two of them, one being Eddie Vedder. Chris insisted on making them part of the project. So this was a supergroup before any of these bands achieved any substantial mainstream sucess. Pearl Jam would release their first album one year later and Soundgarden was just starting to get some attention.

Yep they all started in Seattle playing clubs together and playing in each others bands, writing, etc. Cornell was pretty much the big brother and mentor of the scene, especially once Andy Wood died. Cornell was also the main person to make sure Eddie Vedder was excepted into the scene as he arrived late when all those guys already knew each other, and many of them were not very accepting of Eddie when he first came to Seattle. Cornell was also the principal songwriter of these songs with Temple OTD.

Eddie was recruited & then became Pearl Jam. From the same record you should check out "Wooden Jesus", & "Reach Down".

“Hunger Strike” and “Wooden Jesus” were ideas that might have been a few months old, but I had never really finished writing or fully realized them. They didn’t feel like Soundgarden, so I didn’t really pursue them. But “Hunger Strike” came about because of an existential crisis that Soundgarden faced at that moment. We were sort of the first band [from Seattle] that had attention from labels in a meaningful way. There was a bidding war, which was unusual for any band from Seattle. We were living our dream, but there was also this mistrust over what that meant. Does this make us a commercial rock band? Does it change our motivation when we’re writing a song and making a record? “Hunger Strike” is a statement that I’m staying true to what I’m doing regardless of what comes of it, but I will never change what I’m doing for the purposes of success or money" - Chris Cornell, 2016

Pearl Jam was the only band to go to Congress to fight Ticketmaster was charging too much for concerts. No other band joined them. PJ are so loyal to their fans. Lived in Seattle in 1980s and 90s and had the time of my life with the music scene. ❤

It was a group out together to grieve for their friend Andrew Wood. Before PearlJam there was Mother Love Bone to which Andrew was the singer. Eddie was the ringer, brought into form Pearl Jam. Chris and Andrew were flat mates. Chris took Eddie in like a little brother when arriving in Seattle. I was 16, magical times. Grunge to me was a easy slogan. The bands shared a little in sound, more in heart felt emotion and big vocalists. Love the channel

I don't hear country in it...and Eddie Vedder wasn't from Seattle, he was a surfer from Cali when he tried out to be the new singer of what was Mother Love Bone which became Mookie Blaylock then turned into Pearl Jam, the rest of them were from Seattle though...and after meeting the band a couple of times, Eddie was called to be the singer then moved to Seattle...but yes, ALL of the grunge bands knew each other....because the bands ALL came out of Seattle...and Eddie idt was accepted by everyone right away...but grunge was mainly underground music to begin with, that's why Nirvana front man Kirk Cobain took fame so hard...he never expected to be big him!!🌹

This wasn't really a supergroup when it came out as most of these guys were just starting to become successful. Most of their fame came after this.

Eddie vedder has a very specific way of pronouncing his vowels and words in general. His is the most like unique of the 4 grunge vocalists, he’s always done that and it’s one of my favorite things of his style and it kinda comes out in my singing style too

Temple of the Dog is a tribute to Andy Wood, he was the singer of Mother Love Bone. Andy Wood and Chris Cornell were roommates at one point, so Chris wrote a couple of songs about him after he died. He invited Jeff Ament & Stone Gossard to record these songs with him, they were both in Mother Love Bone. Mike McCready, a friend of Stone was also invited. Jeff, Stone and Mike were testing out new singers for a new band, thats were Eddie Vedder comes in the picture(this became Pearl Jam) . At rehearsal Chris was having trouble singing the lower parts of Hunger Strike, and Eddie steped in and sang them, Chris then invited Eddie back to sing them on record, the first time Eddie ever sang on a record. When both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam became huge, the Temple of the Dog album was re-released and became a hit.

Did really enjoy this music. had feeling. great lyrics and the singing was amazing. voices pushed to new limits and styles. great review to. can't wait till your next reaction. and conversations.
It’s hard to believe that almost all my heroes from the Seattle grunge scene are gone. I thank god that Eddie Vedder is still here and I had the opportunity to have the fallen grunge legends in my life ( shout out to Chris Cornell (soundgarden, audioslave), Layne Staley (Alice and Chains), Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots), and Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) thank you.) Also Siri I know what you mean by that the vocals sounded a bit like country. I always felt, Chris Cornell especially, had a voice that ancient humans used. I think about Native Americans, Africans, ancient Chinese, Muslims reciting Quran (tajweed), all crying from mountain tops. I love it a lot.

Sori is totally right. Chris Cornell has a lot of Country influences. His song "Seasons" is a pure Country song - and what a song it is! And Johnny Cash covered Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage". Both versions are great. Also fun you mention Hair-Metal. Because the whole Temple of the Dog album is a tribute to Andrew Wood, who was the vocalist of Mother Love Bone, which was basically a Glam-Rock band.

In my opinion, Temple of the Dog created the greatest grunge album of all time. Listen to their other song "Say Hello To Heaven." It was written as a tribute to Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood, who had died of a heroin overdose. In fact, Temple of The Dog consisted not of Pearl Jam members, but of Mother Love Bone members. They, along with Eddie Vedder would go on to form Pearl Jam. Temple of The Dog came first. This video was filmed at Discovery Park in Seattle.
