It was more word of mouth where I was because we were never sitting around watching MTV, we full time job looking hot girls to hang out with. Soundgarden has some very Black Sabbath moments in their discography. Listen to songs like Birth Ritual, Beyond the Wheel and Gun if you want more in that direction. The entire Badmotorfinger album is much darker. I prefer their darker, more metal tinted songs over the more Beetles inspired songs like Blackhole Sun. This particular song and this particular album, is my peak Soundgarden. Badmotorfinger is greatness. By the way, you were asking about The Mars Volta on Facebook. The beginning of this song reminds me of one of their songs with the bass and the trippy alien guitar work. You should listen to their song Drunkenship of Lanterns.

Yup. Soundgarden obviously did this before The Mars Volta... but it’s all 60-70s jazz trip inspired sound. Both pulling from that... The Mars Volta definitely dipping into that more often. None of these bands called themselves Grunge. Nirvana - Punk, Pearl Jam - classic American Rock, Soundgarden - Metal. Alice in Chains always had a grungy sound. Essentially they peaked together located in the rain city of Seattle and the world said thank you. Soundgarden on this record were nearly into the prog metal, ignoring the labels all these bands were quite different while sharing a mood/feeling. Expressing real human emotions. These bands also all benefited from a generation of great singers. I was 16 in 91, happy days. Saw them all live.

To quote Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden: “I never got this bullshit about Soundgarden not being a Heavy Metal band, they're a fuckin' Metal band for Christ sake" - It’s cool to see a Bruce give them that sort of Metal stamp of approval. Soundgarden was the most Metal of the big Grunge bands from back then. There’s a few people who might argue that Alice In Chains is, but I disagree because I think anybody who says that probably mostly has Facelift in mind when they make that statement. Or has songs like Man In The Box in mind. But that’s just one album. If all Alice In Chains’ albums sounded like Facelift, then I would probably agree that they were the most Metal. But when you look at their catalog, most of the Metal sounding stuff surrounds that album. With Soundgarden, their catalog is more consistently Metal. Obviously not all of it, but much more apparent than the others. Especially from their first string of albums. As far as the meaning goes, I thought that was cool to see how Vin got the ball rolling. For the first portion of the discussion, it seemed like there was a little bit of confusion when it came to deciphering the meaning. But then Vin’s understanding just seemed to come outta no where, which was cool to see happen so suddenly. I was like “okay you’re definitely in the ball park”. Like on a cold to warm scale, you instantly came in on the “hot” end of the “warm” region. Then as soon as you started looking at pictures, boom, you’re already there. I was impressed. Like the equivalent of having a mountain covered in snow, and then one basic happening on this mountain was enough to trigger an avalanche. The information seemed to come to you in that sort of way.

Specifically, there were a lot of rock guys that did that arms-outstretched kind of pose; that sort of victim that’s suffering for their fans and their art. It’s kind of annoying.
