Lol, you didn't understand the song. It's not 'dark' or needs to be bettered. It's normal and healthy (so long as it's at a distance). Destruction comes before life. Stars die in order for new elements to be created, higher life forms consume lower ones and energy transfers up trophic levels. It's called entropy. Observing nature take it's course and getting serotonin from it is an evolutionary mechanism there to reward us for being alive. Much better you than I.

Sori is a little more accurate about the definition of "voyeur," it is usually used in a sexual connotation but it is more accurately deriving pleasure from watching & observing other people, often watching other people experiencing a pleasure. Voyeurism is also a theme in The Great Gatsby, so you see, (although there may be a fair amount of sexuality in the air of books like that one,) voyeurism isn't an inherently sexual concept. The voyeur who drills a hole in a wall or sets up a spy camera is a very literal interpretation. We hid death in the west. Very few people actually ever see a dead body other than at a funerals. We don't even prepare our own dead for burial. We have professionals do it for us. The curiosity many people have, I believe, is because we had detached ourselves from death. It's not something to fear as much as it's a curiosity

Violence/death/destruction increases ratings on the news, yet even those of us who are aware of the media's obsession with it are still human and can't resist the urge to look as we pass by an automobile accident on the road.

Sori, you dear sweet beautiful soul. Thank goodness you and Vin have each other to find balance and strength as you grow together. You guys hit the nail on the head on this song. The instinctual drive to survive is transforming us into connoisseur of violence. These are the chains that we need to break moving forward and evolve. As people learn to cast off these chains we are able to grow past these attachments to we work so hard to hide, we will finally start to grow beyond the sensationalized media driven perversion of our survival instinct.

This is a difficult topic, on one hand there is a lot of traumatizing and desensitizing effects to images of real violence that can cause so many problems but at the the same time some people needs the kick in the ass, the shock of seeing the reality of violence to come to pay attention and actually care. My personal struggle with real life violence is between what I feel is my civic duty to be aware of what is going on in the world and my community and trying to maintain my own mental health as someone who finds actual violence incredibly disturbing and triggering towards my PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Some times I HAVE to shut myself off from the world for a few days to cope. Sometimes I feel like we are damned if we do and damned if we don't. Being ignorant of the reality of violence in our world doesn't help, how can we work to change things and make the world better if we're ignorant? At the same time real violence can have such a horrific and traumatizing affect on people that it can make things worse. How do we draw the line between the too? With what you said about LGBT+ people, how lesbians or butch women or even transmen are far more accepted than gay men or transwomen, that's a prime example of sexism and misogyny. It's about men being inherently superior to women. A butch woman (who is inferior for being a woman) is taking on aspects of at least the appearance if not also the behavior of her superior (men). She is elevating herself. Where a transwoman is choosing to discard the superior position of being male for the inferior position of being female. Works the same for gay men, being attracted to men is something only women are supposed to do, so by being attracted to another man they are debasing themselves to be like women. With lesbians it's a mix of the elevation of taking on the male trait of being attracted to women, sexual objectification of women, and (to at least some degree) the protection of the fragile, insercure male ego. If it's just two women then there's no naked guy to look at and make you question your sexuality.

Part of the problem we have now-a-days with Social Media and events is that people equate individual situations to a group. Like what you brought up in the video with the Eric Garner situation. That is an individual situation. Not all cops are like that. Not all situations are like that. However, people will view individual situations and hold an opinion on the entire group. While there may be problems with a structure or organization we shouldn't hold opinions on an entire group of people because of an individual situation. That is the root of racism, hate, and in-equality.

You were very specific about not liking death videos, but I think Maynard just means tragedy stories in general. Kittens playing the keyboard don't hold people's attention. Hurricanes and school shootings and "menacing" caravans from Mexico and shark attacks and lead in the public water supply - these things hold people's attention. People don't watch Real Housewives to see them doing the dishes. They watch for the arguments and fights.

The song is taking a jab at cable news and how we are all addictive to it. The song came out before FB and most social media. Maynard has a strange ability to see into the future based on what was happening around him at the time. You are right that he's self aware. I think he's an Atheist, but you can see a lot of Buddhist beliefs in some of his songs. The song was written about Fox News and how people are so addicted to it that they see tragedy happen and think it's like the WWE. They are so glued to Fox News that if they go to a doctor's office, they can't handle the fact that any other channel but Fox News is on the TV. Usually they have on HGTV, but this guy was so pissed that they wouldn't change the channel to fox, he threatened the nurses and had to be taken out by police.

I don't think it is as widespread as people think it is. Like smoking weed. Some people do it, but the majority of people are elderly and anyone under 15 (I hope) likely don't watch it. I should imagine most women don't either, although certainly a lot do. Sadly a lot of younger people will get into it in this generation as their whole lives are on the internet it seems. Porn is terrible along with every other form of instant gratifying things in society, like food, caffeine, alcohol. Excess in anything is bad and I feel that a large portion of the male population have a dependency on pornography.

The lyrics 'We wont give pause until the blood is flowing' is more along the lines of the fact that we wont stop doing the things in our everyday lives until we see something so violent that it stops us in our tracks, we will stop and give pause to watch something bloody and violent, somebody subjected to either violence or ultimately death, to live through their tragedy, to learn the cause and the end result of the circumstances of said incident, its how we learn to survive, to adapt to situations that could unless learned, would kill us or cause us some tragedy etc. Its the basis of human survival, weve been doing it since time began, HEY, JOHNNY ACCIDENTLY RAN IN FRONT OF A TRUCK AND GOT KILLED..... the lesson we take from that is dont run in front of a truck because it could kill you. As vin says, the ubiquitous nature of the media and how its shared nowadays is so readily available and as much as you try and steer clear of watching those tragic videos of someones downfall or death, its a human trait to want to see it so that we learn to avoid that situation if it ever presented itself, its how we learn and evolve and survive! Were all vicarious by nature, to what extreme is varied depending on your life experiences etc, some people actually get off on watching people die, other see the tragedy of it and we try and put ourselves in that situation but thankfully it happened to someone else and not them.... Much better you than i!!! You should listen to some of the new A Perfect Circle album, TALK TALK, By and down the river, Disillusioned. Also listen to some Puscifer, the track Simultaneous, both studio and vinyl edition, theyre both of the same context but lyrically very different.

I am pretty sure that one of the major points of this song (it was released on 2006) was the new phenomenon that humankind had of experiencing, from a distance via live tv, stuff like war or human disasters in real time. This is not like social media per se, where social media is at least interactive and people can comment on or even do their own reporting on the events being seen live. This is about the surreal passivity that many experiencing see bombs actually hit in real time from bomb cams or watching the towers fall live on tv or any other similar event.

There is a theory about how the size of a primate skull can determine the (also, just came to the point with the contractions. Congratulations!) size of the tribe. It's called the Dunbar number. Robin Dunbar is an anthropologist that found this correlation to the size of primate skulls to the size of tribes their tribes. For humans it's about 150 (relatively). But what this means is that there is a hardwired amount of how many people you can really empathize with at any given time. People outside of that parameter become abstracts (like why you feel more when a loved one cuts their hand versus when you hear about 300+ people dying in a terrorist attack. No judgement, it's just the way we're built). It's why people in large cities are generally seen as colder because they are dealing with a larger population than people who live in smaller cities. They have to shield themselves emotionally from other people because our brains aren't able to process this amount of emotional stimulation. Our technology has outgrown our physical ability to process true empathy. ...so now that I've rambled, thank you for your insights and entertainment.

In a way this is a natural extension from Stinkfist. Talking about widespread cultural desensitization and the need to feel better about one’s self by watching misfortune of others go hand in hand. In this song he even says “we won’t give pause until the blood is flowing”. Watching Vin’s reactions while the song played I was worried he was just gonna label Maynard as some sociopath, but I’m glad he really got what Maynard was doing here. It’s so much more powerful when he sings it from the first person perspective and makes it deeply personal and honest.

I am kind of jealous of you just now getting into Tool... I have been a Tool fan since 1993. So waiting for their new album that is finally coming this August has been killing me. In case you didn't know they have played two new songs in their latest tour. I was lucky enough to hear them in person. Search out here for them.... Invincible and Descending are the two songs. They are very good but not as good as their older stuff in my opinion.

Sori understands the emotional side of things so well. The reality of things, not so well. Vin is a perfect compliment to he naivety. I love you guys as a couple. Perfect symmetry. Fo sho. :)

If you stopped and slowed to look at a bad car accident along the freeway , then you have. Yes it’s true, if you don’t think so, then why’d you look?

I would like to add about the "let everyone out of prison," comment. I feel, all nonviolent drug offenders should be released.

Marillion Assasing, Fugazi or Punch and Judy. See I request things other than, Iron Maiden Revelations, 22 Acadia Avenue or Sea of Madness. Remember Tomorrow or Killer's from the early years. See, I'm not a one trick pony.

I think that this song is also about watching all kinds of movies, fake stories, that satisfy our need of thrill and entertainment.
