My first ASTRO VAN MODS! - the bass van vlogs #5

Today, Rafa and I discuss which mods I should start with on the Astro Van. I decide to start by cleaning up the look of the van by shaving the factory license plate box. I plan to tuck the bumpers closer to the body and shave all door handles.
We are waiting for sound deadener material and audio equipment and we have PLENTY of work to do!, so sit back and enjoy this long bass van build project! :)))

Doug, use 3m 08115 panel bond to "weld" the panel over the license plate , the bondo glass will hair line crack with time. Just for future reference 👍

The panel welding should be its own mini series within the series. 4-5 welds a day. No warpage. Maximum content. Perfect panel in the end. Win win Doug

You don't need to worry about distortion from welding as much on the rear door because the strength from the flange just tack one side tac the opposite side and just keep tacking jumping from one side to the other

Hey Doug ..... do the spot welds . But move around . Start in one corner the move to the next and so on . And repeat . The panel won’t heat up and less chance of warping. Also less chance of cracking the filler done the road.

next body work tip Doug never straight line prime. most of the time it leaves lines after paint showing your body work section. Instead roll some tape by sticking the back side far from the area being primed and roll the front edge back and use the sticky side to attach paper. This leaves your primer line being defined by the adhesive backing on the tape leaving a nice nonuniform over spray edge. Sands away a lot better.

Hey Doug, it's better to use more heat. When you turn down your welder you need more time to heat the welding spot up. The heat goes in to the sheet metal and causes the warping in your panel. You spend too much time on the same area. Walk around your whole panel, not only in the same corner. Use a thinner wire than your sheet metal. I set my welder up, to weld through the metal in one second. Not more, or it will warp. And use compressed air to cool down your weld quickly. Sorry for my bad english. I love your videos. Spot weld around the panel. Do not try to run a long weld. Jump around the panel 8 or 9 times and let the panel cool off . Don't use water. Welding sheet metal takes time. The slower the better. Don't get in a rush.

I think you should do a 2 tone at the midle body line. Or something crazy like a 3 or 4 tone and gradually change the shades to the roof, break them up at each body line. White on the roof to a dark color below the bumper line.

Using spot welds move at least 4 inches away after each spot. Continue all the way around till it is fully welded. The whole reason you warped roof is because you're trying to weld in one spot too much.. No matter how much kitty hair filler you put on there it is just going to crack out from the bass..

For that back panel, don’t weld. You should use body panel bond adhesive . Then you body work over it.

JB weld ain’t got nothing on this stuff. There’s another one from maxwell or something like that. I rebuilt the plastic engine cover on a guy’s John deer lawn tractor using and a plastic F150 air dame to fill in the missing parts. They use it to repair plastic bumpers and you can sand it and primer and paint without bondo.
