This makes me think of what the (often overlooked) Korean War B-29 crews must have felt, flying night missions over North Korea. It's almost eerie, you're all alone in a dark sky...except you might not be alone. Will the MiG jets find your formation despite the darkness? Will your mission be completed successfully? So many thoughts that would have gone through their heads, even with possibly a beautiful view of stars.

My grandfather was a B-29 co-pilot in Korea, he had many stories about life during the war, but only rarely told any of his actual missions. When he did tell them he would get a far away look in his eyes. I think a part of him wasn't every fully out of the cockpit to be honest.

This reminds me of flying across the Pacific (transpac) in the U.S. Navy P-3 Orion. There was certainly a difference in the sound, since we had T-56A-14 turboprop engines, which turned at a constant 13820 rpm, and the whine of the jet engine, but the effect is the same. All throughout the aircraft, crew and passengers would find a spot to stretch out or curl up to snooze in the cold, dark aircraft. There were 2 bunks in the aft, but they were reserved for the off-duty pilot and flight engineer. One night, I decided to take a break from reading through some paperwork, and I walked up to the flight station (cockpit). Through the heavy blackout curtains, and into the even more dark compartment with the glowing red instrument panels below the windscreens, through which one could see the utter blackness over the mid-Pacific Ocean. As I stood behind the pilots and the flight engineer, I realized that all three of them were asleep! You should have seen them wake with a start when I asked, "Shouldn't at least one of you be awake?" It was funny, since there was little chance of us missing Japan, still hours away, but in a very real sense, you can appreciate from listening to this video how hypnotic the constant drone and lack of sensory stimulation can be in real life.

Not too dissimilar from flying in Afghanistan, sometimes at night can see white snow sloped mountains if far enough east/south and they’d sleep possibly once in an orbit depending. Some spots were risky due to crossing the border super easy by accident. Reminds me of 130 props a bit and similar mood to Dehav-8. I miss ops…

Though a different cockpit, the sound is so similar your video took me right back to my USAF days 50 years ago. Though not a combat aircraft, we fought the weather and mechanical emergencies, along with incredible boredom as the engines lulled us to sleep, like this video's sound is doing to me now. This sound unlocked a memory of my childhood when it was nighttime. I just spent a weekend night playing jak 3. Orange street lights, window open, sound of crickets, occasional passing car, and the low hum of a fan which sounded exactly like this that I fell asleep to. Only to wake up and have a worry free and fun adventure filled day at elementary school. God, I've never yearned with my soul for a simpler time to date. You never know what you got until you don't have it anymore, being brought to a relative to be watched over wrapped up in a blanket at 4am in a half asleep stupor while my parents would go off to work. Same thing with long car rides, considering we'd make frequent trips to the airport to pick people up that would spend a month or so with us before having to go back, the car rides with that specific quality of sound in early 2000s radios at a low volume, along with the passing overhead lights, the cloth seats, the soft rumble of the tire on the highway. Man, how peacefully I'd sleep. Always managed to wake up just as we got home despite no one making a peep either. Just a matter of subconsciously recognizing road patterns, speed, bump, turn signal, and direction of turns. It's something else I think few may get the chance to experience today.
@BlackAtomProductions
@BlackAtomProductions Жыл бұрын
I completely understand. Nothing beats those childhood memories of long car rides to visit relatives. For me it was a two hour journey to visit my aunt. I would always fall asleep on the way there and when we arrived she always had a set of satin sheets she'd put on my bed for me. I used to love sliding into them on a warm summer night as they were so cool. She'd always make my favorite meal when I visited, teriyaki chicken. Whenever I make a video I always try to capture sounds to recreate nostalgic moments that many of us experienced from youth as those memories can be a very powerful tool for helping to trigger sleep. I grew up on the coast of Maine so I've made a bunch of coastal ambience videos from memory of the many sounds I heard each night falling asleep during the summer. The sound of distant ocean waves crashing on the beaches, a harbor bell, fog horn, stuff like that. And of course I created some car ambience videos featuring sounds like driving along the highway, along with rain, the radio, etc. All great sounds for sleep. Thanks for sharing and thanks for listening!

@@BlackAtomProductions One memory of the coast I always remember isnt so much sound, but the totality of it. Each day the call of seagulls, the singing of birds perched atop ancient trees growing throughout the city of Sopot. The uneven cobble roads filled with tourists, and when the tourists left filled with us locals. Some of who would smoke giving rise to that musky mix of smoke and seaside breeze. Each morning was dotted with light passing through the trees, and as the day stretched on so did the shadows cast by antique buildings and tall trees. For all its shortcomings, the holes in the streets, the occasional gangsters and minor gangs that came and went, the renegade drug and party scene off in the distance. There was no fear of me walking the streets as a young boy and living carefree. Nowadays mafias have moved in and even though the town is at its most bueatiful going to clubs is going into a criminals lair. Mafia have bought out a ton of property and fights are normal now. The locals have all moved out because there is no local economy except tourism and apart from the season its empty. Its strange to see a city become so rich and die at the same time. Soon the only thing left from us locals will be a graveyard full of our names, and in time that will be forgotten. Part of what made our childhoods so amazing was the amount of other children growing up with us. Now not even half of us have children of our own... Poland it seems will half its native population by the time im 80... It worries me most that I might not be able to give my children that I plan to have this same level of childhood, not because of anything I did but because of the way the world is.

I know right, it's a great sound just to zone out to. The sound of propellers, multiple or single engines, something about it is soothing. I have found that there are so many different sounds and combinations of sounds that will put me to sleep, or I just love to listen and relax. Quite often when I'm making these videos for this channel, I have to fight to stay awake just to finish my work 😂

The B-29 is my favorite plane in almost every aspect. I quickly grew to love the hum of the engines and I agree they make for good background noise for sleep. So very calming and relaxing. I'd imagine they were pretty alert on bombing runs. It had to have been nerve-racking, never knowing when enemy planes were going to show up or flak was going to start exploding all around. It took a while and a lot of guts to fly those missions. It is a great sound though to listen to, those engines. I often find myself struggling to stay awake when putting one of these videos together 😂
