For those who say we shouldn't find this relaxing... It isn't wrong, we don't crave the sound of war or combat. What we crave is the sensation of safety, or being just out of reach from danger. Hearing it in the distance means it's not here. It's cozy, the same feeling you get when you are in your house by a crackling fire while a storm rages outside.

As a soldier, even when you sleep (what little sleep you do get), you can judge to a degree of how close or how far away the sounds. You never really 'sleep', as a part of you is constantly 'awake' listening. Even then, an attack can happen at any time. But hearing the far away sounds is actually to a degree 'comforting' in such away as they are not close... It's hard to explain. And if you hear them getting closer, you respond accordingly... Thank you for posting this.

This makes me think of all those who haven't had a directly personal part of war, but have been swept up in it's chaos nevertheless. Sitting in your home, only a scant couple miles from an active front or battlefield. Maybe you have children fighting in the war. At the very least you know someone who is. Your neighbor, another's husband, both of another's sons. Knowing you have chores to do, but mesmerized and terrified by the distant sounds of uncertain future, potential coming hardships, and the specter of death swinging his scythe and harvesting men like wheat. The cow begging to be milked, the sow pleading for her slop. The mind skips a beat between the war that could change everything, and the chores that won't change no matter who wins the war. Whether Napoleonic or World War Europe, Revolutionary or Civil War America, or anywhere else, doesn't matter...war sweeps up all, even those who try to hide and hope it passes them by. The fear and uncertainty of those who have heard these sounds for real echoing across their formally peaceful and comforting landscape, from young children all the way to the aged, can weigh heavily on the mind.

No one cares and adhd isn't real. You've been lied to by pharmaceutical companies that want you addicted to their product. Wake up.

Things are fucked up in chicago downtown?

Oh stfu. I’ve lived in Chicago all my life and I’m in my mid 30s. It’s nothing like this. I also work downtown and it’s probably the safest place in the city. I bet you never even ventured anywhere outside of your bubble.

downtown Chicago is not the hood what are u talking about., i used to live in Pilsen my aunt's house got shot at when she was renting, they thought a gangbanger was still living there but he moved out. I rarely hear gun shots like once every 6 months compare to the south side every week

In the world we live in now I don't feel safe. In a combat type area and knowing I can handle things in a combat type area way... very comforting. Just easier that way.

“Hear the sound of the machine gun. Hear it echo in the night. Mortars firing, rains the scene. Scars the fields that once were green. It’s a stalemate at the frontline, where the soldiers rest in mud. Roads and houses, all is gone. There’s no glory to be won.” Price of a Mile by Sabaton
