Wonderfully awesome! I've always been a fan of minimalist versions. Another reason I like the 12in extended singles from the 80s, as they frequently did that with songs. Sometimes they started out with a minimalist version, and ended with a minimalist version. Believe it or not, I didn't know that so many elements went into recording that piece. I'm impressed. Jan sent his IIx back to Fairlight after getting the III, so…yes, I’m *not* Jan haha. The Sundown is a smoother distortion than the Rockman. I don’t believe the Sundown is heard on any version of Crockett’s Theme. Thanks for watching/commenting! 😎

On the one hand this is an amazing and super-accurate cover. On the other hand, it's got to be $50-$60K worth of vintage gear to make it--and that's with a VST Fairlight. It would be interesting to compare with a poor man's "all VST" version.

Thank you! I don't know the "bank" name, but I changed the name of that patch to "The Talk" many years ago because Jan uses that patch on his song "The Talk" (it helped me distinguish it more easily from the other guitars in my presets). He had his done by a professional. I did mine myself haha. Used a pitch wheel from a DX7 and modded the molex from KX5 ribbon pad to work with the wheel. Used a small hand-held grinder to cut out a place to mount the wheel. Good times haha. Actually turned out nice for an amateur. What you see in this video is the early stages of the project. Start with one of the factory preset pads. 31, 32, 33? I can’t remember, but one of the “Low Strings” pads. You’ll have to tweak the HPF and cutoff to get close. Good luck! I highly recommend you buy a System 8 for Jupiter sounds. I have one, and after playing the JP8, I can honestly say you can not tell the difference in a mix. It’s all-around the best clone so far. Hopefully, Behringer will make a JP8 clone, but until then, nothing I’ve tried is better than the System 8, which weighs about 10lbs, doesn’t need to warm up, and never needs tuning/calibration. It’s one of my favorite synths ever. Worth every penny of $1K US. 👏👏👏

Synth composers are just as much musicians as they are programmers looking for that specific sound, and I love that you honour that tradition. I love it when people think of a song as something more than just the notes: sounds define an era and can trigger strong emotions. I think of effects as an integral part of a sound (like the gated reverb on the basedrum for instance) and I don´t know if it´s laziness, shortage of money/equipment or whether most people just have no ear for that depth of detail, but you sure do. Amazing! Big fan of all that you're doing! Do you have any tips for how to achieve the rolling bass on Roland's Jupiter-8 Plugin? I believe the patch must be something like patch 48 or on Roland's Plugin "1981 Harp" but I'm not 100%. I've got the arp set to "Random" and the range set to "4". I believe the assigned mode is Poly "1" but also not sure. I seem to have difficulty getting the sequence right, perhaps the speed/rate, as I'm a bit of newbie when trying to adjust the arpeggio. Thanks!

Thanks Nicholas! That JP-8 bass is a real mystery. The one I made in this video works great in the mix, but leaves a bit to be desired in when isolated. I honestly don't even remember where I started with it. I do believe it was a bass preset though. Good luck!

If you managed to get your hands on a real Memorymoog and a real Jupiter-8 hats off bud. They're two of the greatest (and now most exclusive) vintage synths. I was looking at the Moog One but they are extremely expensive, not quite the same as the old Memorymoogs, and not something I want to finance right now with all the economic uncertainty over the virus right now.
@retro-dademusic64034 жыл бұрын
Matthew Cragg Thanks, Matthew. The Memorymoog+ is mine. It is refurbished better than new. I’m extremely fortunate to own as fine an example as any in existence! The JP-8 in this video was loaned for one day of tracking/videoing. However, I do own a System-8, and after playing both, I could never spend the money for a real JP-8 when the plug out on the S8 is almost unrecognizably different (audibly) side by side (at least for what I do). I highly recommend the System 8 to anyone who wants vintage Roland synth sounds. It’s amazing!
