David (the singer) received specific approval and permission personally from Simon & Garfunkle to do their song. They heard him sing it and they were so impressed that they very much approved and found his version of their song really carried the message of the song in such a deep and felt way.

I must thank the Band DISTURBED. In 2013 our son was killed by a Drunk Driver while he was leaving a Jason Aldean concert. When I first heard this song my heart dropped. I started crying because it reminded me of the deadly path my son had to take that night. In 2016 they dedicated the Sound of Silence to our son, Michael on the venue where he was killed.

Every time I hear Disturbed's version of 'Sound of Silence' it moves me to tears. I have chronic bilateral tinnitus that has affected my ability to 'pitch' when singing with friends or bands or in choirs but I remember songs sufficiently to centre my ears when listening. This performance simply 'moves' me in ways others don't.

Disturbed's version of this song is so strong... so imminent and fraught with warning... so dire for action and yet so sad and what could be with failure to heed the warnings... S&G's original was almost like "reading" a history book and the emotion conveyed was "Oh well...". Yes. As a gen X guy, and a Marine of the 90's, THIS is the version I feel in my soul. THIS is the version it always should have been.

Maggie, I love it when classically trained vocalists take the plunge and venture outside of their personal genre. Heavy Metal has produced some of the most amazing vocalists. David Draiman is just one. My personal favorites are Rob Halford of Judas Prist, and Geoff Tate formerly of Queensryche who still, to this day, has a 4 octave voice. Another vocalist that ventures into the speed metal or death metal genre is King Diamond. His music is very dark, but his voice is piercingly high and clear. Thanks for giving metal vocalists a chance.

He has so much control of his voice. He turns the rasp on and off like it has a switch. That's really evident when he sings "tenement halls" tenement = rasp, halls = no rasp. I see people have suggested the video...it has so much symbology to go with the lyrics. It's really good. It also starts with the literal sound of silence, which throws a lot of people off.

@@richardnanian6075 For sure. I'm just being facetious, of course. I'm sure any musician is flattered when new bands cover their music. S&G is definitely a timeless group that continues to influence, not only across generations, but across genres. Someone else expressed that Simon and Garfunkel sang this song as a hopeless warning. Almost 50 years later, Disturbed expressed an anger in this song, that the warning was forgotten. What a deep thought. But, isn’t that music should do?

I know you've been told (I'm months late to the party, LOL), if you haven't already listened to other versions of this, the biggest issue of him being sick was actually a significantly COMPRESSED range (he normally goes a bit deeper, AND a bit higher, on the accents), as well as a much more nasal "n" (sounds closed off at the finish, his 'n's normally finish very open but you can hear they were dying in his sinuses in this performance). As well as some of the wide-open notes were much tighter and less breath available for them, all the more impressive in my book, having heard it live in concert, imagine this performance was about 80-85% of his abilities.

I like your reaction. You already know being a vocalist. What I think is kinda crazy is his range, and he even does vibrato in both raspy hardcore vocals along with the smooth parts! And how he can easily switch! I already know he has had opera experience. Ive been a fan since day 1. He was sick, thats amazing you noticed. His official video sounds better, but to be sick, that is just amazing live!

David has years of show business experience and brings that professionalism to this performance but he also trained as a Hazzan (Jewish Cantor) and is able to tap into the spiritual aspects of the song which gives it a much greater emotional depth. (subbed)

David brings an emotional element to "Sound of Silence" missing from the Simon & Garfunkel version. He rages at the "neon gods" and the indifference of the "crowd" to human suffering expressed "in tenemat halls" and "subway walls". Simon & Garfunkel didn't go there. In that way, David actually improved on this classic song by giving it that powerful emotional arc.

John Johnson I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the 2 different versions and their respective meanings in those Oh! so different times. As a person who was listening to the original version when it first hit the AM radio in D.C. and so many pitiful renditions it was refreshing to hear this young man completely take control of the song and make it completely new.
