“The South Seas Adventure” (1958) is the fifth in a series of Cinerama travelogues, which comprises a few fictional stories, mainly shot on location at different parts of the south sea. Musical accompaniment was giving beautifully by Alex North, whose music takes an important supportive character to the actions on screen. The movie is filled with recordings from different interprets, performing existing / traditional pieces, but today we focus on North’s original score. Enjoy!

Great movie and score. Going to the Cinerama travelogs was one thing we all did as a family. I have all the audio CDs and Blu-ray movies of all the Cinerama releases especially the 3 panel ones.

The visual antithesis of its most famous and awarded " relative ", the Italian " Mondo Cane "(1962). While this captures the natural beauties the other captures the bizarre and also natural ugliness. Musically, " Mondo... " was a demonstration of the incredible versatility of its composers, Riz Ortolani and Nino Oliviero. In " South Seas Adventure " its impossible not to associate it with the work of the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa - Lobos, performed in concerts around the world since the 30s, always representing Nature and folklore in huge orchestras ( including in a North ,- American film, " Green Mansions ", in 1959 ). North was a delicate person with great sensitivity and who loved the culture of other peoples and regions. His mastery here show us and reminds us how dumb and bad character Stanley Kubrick was when he treated him like garbage and almost killed him a decade later, in the supernothing " 2001 ". Phew!... Totally agree that Kubrick treated Mr North abominably but have to admit that the score for 2001 was groundbreaking and perfect for the film. I'm a fan of Mr North but still have to reconcile the selected tracks for 2001. Can any contemporary composer outdo Strauss, Richard and Johan. Music history will just overwhelm them.

What a treasure! Alex North is always welcome. I will be grading all weekend and I will putting this on repeat. I don't know much about the Cinerama series so I will be looking that up (I love a good research project).

Alex also did the seminal, (and very different) jazz score for "A Streetcar Named Desire". These guys are amazing.

Hey Fred, I know you like classic soundtracks. Can you do the 1958 Hammer Production of Dracula? I believe the score was done by James Bernard. I would love to listen to that. Thanks 🙏

Hello Nicholas! I would love to do it. Unfortunately Bernard's original recordings haven't been released anywhere, yet (maybe they even don't exist anymore? I don't know). Of course there is a re-recording of his music by Tadlow Music but usually we try to focus on the original material on this site (or re-recordings by the composers). However, this is not a "no" from me. If it turns out that there will be no other possibility to listen to Bernard's music, we shall enjoy the re-recording to celebrate his wonderful work (as he and it clearly deserves). :-) Best! Fred
