I make soup for lunch or supper at least 3 times a week. I haven't been grocery shopping in 2 weeks due to the bad weather. Yesterday I made soup with a small piece of leftover chicken one small sausage and 6 medium shelled boiled shrimp all leftover from the weeks meals since I had no fresh veg except onion I used a can of Margaret Holmes tomatoes, okra and corn. It was just a made up soup so it's my new recipe almost gumbo soup. Lol

I have been lower energy than usual these days. Somehow, I caught myself chucking things from the freezer into my instant pot, shredding vegetables and making noodles. The only thing I took time to do properly was clean the shrimps. 😂 It was delicious and healthy, and I have enough broth for months! I use empty jam jars to can it. Instead of doomsday prepping, I do sickday prepping.

Definitely similar to zuppa Toscana….which is a favorite with our family. I liked your idea about the first addition of potatoes cooking down. For that effect in other recipes, toss in a portion of instant potato flakes. Cheap, added nutrition, added filler! ♥️ Always, always enjoy your videos!

I am so happy to see you making this soup. I live an area rich in Portuguese heritage and this soup is one I make regularly. I of course make a large pot so I can freeze some for a later time. I don’t use and stock. I start my soup by cooking the kale and onion first until the kale starts to form a good soup base. Some pot liqueur. Then I add my carrots and potato. ❤ I also add red kidney beans. I like canned and add the liquid. This makes the broth more flavorful too. The sausage I use is made locally. Chourico is a thicker bit spicer. They sell a hotter version. I add the cooked sausage back in to warm up. The flavor is more pronounced. ❤ looking forward to the next soup.

Thanks so much for sharing your method. 😁I was thinking that adding the kale in first made more sense. I'm going to try your way next time. I still have the sausage in the fridge so I was thinking about making another pot this afternoon actually. I just picked up some red chard that I think would be good in it. Have a great week!
@VictoriaFerland-gu7rb8 ай бұрын
@@ArdentMichelle chard sounds good too. I also use the sausage with beans. I cheat sometimes and buy a can of bush beans or equivalent. Sauté up an onion with the sausage. Add the beans. That's one thing about fall and winter, you can eat them straight on through. Do you think baby kale would be good or a studier kind like what you were using. Anyway, I will keep you posted when I make it. I think my next thing is jambalaya then this. Have a great week. Charlotte

Linguica was the better choice since there's no chorizo in Portugal. They have a very similar sausage called Chouriço - I guess that's the same word in portuguese, but it's a lot less paprika flavor and a lot more smokey. Also your substitution for lacinato kale was a good one as that kale is well used in Portugal. What I don't agree with is the chicken bouillon powder. Making a real chicken broth from bones, skins, carcass or the leftovers of a rotissery chicken is super easy and so much better than that artificially flavored broth.
@ArdentMichelle8 ай бұрын
yes, the Portuguese chourico is what I was referring to, but they didn't have it at the store I was in anyway. I agree that using homemade chicken broth is best, but it's not always possible for my viewers. I believe in this recipe I used boxed chicken broth and supplemented with a little more powder. I believe using whole foods is always best and in the end tastier, but there is a time expense with that too so everyone has to do what is best for them.
@LAactor7 ай бұрын
With the kale what you can do to have it have a more luscious velvety mouth feel is to "massage" it beforehand. Basically you squeeze it until it becomes soft and the fibers break down. This is true for raw use in salads or for cooking. Ps, I love your soft asmr voice that you use. I'm not an ASMR person, but someone else said recently it about another person I watch and it made sense. I was listening to some of your things a year ago and when you forgot and spoke normally in your speaking voice I could tell it makes a difference in a big way! It really works for your videos!
@ArdentMichelle7 ай бұрын
Sometimes I'm more animated than others and it really depends on the microphone I'm using. When I first started, I practically had to yell into the microphone because people kept complaining that they couldn't hear me. Now, I have a much better microphone and if I even breathe too close to the mic you can hear me, so I speak quieter, but overall I would say I've leaned in to a more calming vibe because most of my viewers tell me it's what they like. 😁
