"My mom still makes me feel safe." I liked the approach she took to this, showing how this struggle impacts her and her mother. That the "dark side of being mixed" is she will not grow up to be her mother. That hits hard on a more intimate level.

May this go viral. Cuz too many stories of being mixed are told from light skinned or racially ambiguous folk. We need balance.

Really wasn't expecting to get misty eyed, but life happens. As a woman I can totally relate to wanting to grow up and look like my mom. She was the most beautiful woman to me as a child. Having that close relationship really does make a huge difference, and naturally anyone would feel loved and protected. But my heart breaks for her and so many others because all the world sees is color, like she said. Her sadness and anger is like a slow burn. It only gets worse as we get older it seems.
