Both the landlord couples were actually martial artists & stuntman/stuntwoman back in the 70s/80s. Both of them trained in the Peking opera with well known action stars in Hong Kong such as Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung & Yuen Biao since young.

Steven Chow the director, the main character and the producer of the film is the best cartoon-style kungfu comedy director alive!!!! Everything is so random and cartoonish but always tells a simple heart-felt story, strongly suggest you guys to react to Shaolin Soccer after this. P.S. He is making Shaolin Women Soccer right now after a long time he made anything. His films tend to be cartoonish but always have a sad dark undertone to it, telling stories about the little guys, the 'nobody's.

The many martial arts featured in this film are actually pretty famous, and you can also see the 2 stages of the martial arts genre here, namely wushu and wuxia. The 3rd stage is xianxia and that is literally when you become an immortal by mastering martial arts, with fights involving xianxia martial artists akin to Madara vs Hashirama level of map and terrain changing fights. The basis of these 3 genres actually all tie down to one concept: Chi. The first 3 martial artists that appeared to save the tenants from the Axe Gang are the more modern and down to earth and realistic martial arts called wushu. These are real and can actually be learned and trained. There are no chi involved in this stage. Then from wushu, it escalated to wuxia when the musicians got involved. Wuxia is when the internal chi and all that mumbo jumbo come into play, displaying martial artists that had mastered martial arts and capable of superhuman feats by utilising internal chi to enhance their bodies and attacks, such as the Lion's Roar soundwave attack or injuring someone with just playing the musical instrument using chi to produce sound waves. Even traveling at superspeed or becoming capable of stepping on water and superjumps. The highest level of chi manipulation or chi mastery is when mastery of chi had reached such a profound level that the user can even project his internal chi externally to the surrounding. To put it simply, they are capable of using their own internal chi to influence the environment, such as firing their chi like projectiles and move things with their chi like telekinesis. To summarise, wuxia is the romanticised version of martial arts, and are seldom realistic, with many of the kungfu and martial arts being mere myths and legends. The Buddha's Palm is one such romanticised mythical martial arts, with the user capable of reducing mountains to rubble or split the earth open into a gorge, or even have their own shouting soundwave attack like the Lion's Roar. Firing off their internal chi and creating one giant chi handprint is literally just the first phase, or you can say beginner level of using Buddha's Palm.

@holohulolo

I haven't watched Wuxia for many years, used to watched just about every series that came out. You know reading this, I just realise I forgot that Qi was different from NeigGong.i thought in WuXia everything is about NeiGong(internal force/energy), but you are right, Qi is the one that's forced out as a projectile while NeiGong is basically their power level, that determines how well you control it, in your body, as projectile, how strong it is, and how tough the person can be. I was explaining this, in other reaction video about NeiGong. But translation wise, saying the NeiGong is the internal force and saying the inter force is also what is projected makes sense easier. Anyway, I was explaining it, because after watching a couple of these reaction video over some time, I realise they often miss this element and misinterpret what's going on. Like the one where they use the musical instruments and some of them thought it was some kind of magic and that the blade form is real, but really it was just to symbolise how sharp the projectile is. They also miss the part where when his lips got bitten, some of his Qi channels have been unblocked, and thus he was able to create those dents on the metal, and finally when he was beaten half to death, all of it was unblocked and thus he became super. although in usual wuxia, they seldom just suddenly become that powerful but they quickly become that powerful. Also, its a very rare thing to unblock all the channels, and in a way, all his channel being able to be unblocked is why he's a "kungfu genius", as in more like he was born to great at it. usually when the character suddenly becomes so strong, some more experienced senior or someone with great NeiGong transferred it to them, the movie took a bit of liberty with this. Theres also the part about that buddha palm technique, like teaching the beast the technique means hes going to be able to master it. Theres also the part where certain skills not only require practice it requires cultivation, the "KouJue", and is why in some Wuxia stories, the bad guy can steal the technique manual and not able to master the skills.Not to mention how not learning it with proper cultivation, you can corrupt the neigong and hurt yourself, or go crazy, even if theres some level of power, it'll never beat doing it the right way. There's also the part about QingGong, but most of the people who react on that scene with him jumping off the bird, meant that he was thrown so high by the enemy and the bird was to show how high it was, but it was actually meant to show his QingGong power, being able to propel himself upwards off the bird without really pushing the bird down much. theres also the reference to yang guo and XiaoLongNu, which obviously was probably the strongest couple ever in the entire jinyong series, particularly YangGuo, we always feel he would've been the strongest if he had 2 hands. Not to mention the scene with the beggar scamming little children. The scene will seem different when you know that those manuals, might actually be legit. I mean in the setting they dont seem to have that many wuxia level. character, and besides its a modern world not the typical ancient china wuxia setting, so its possible that actual manual has become common but no one practices them, and would explain why, he was able to do the buddha palm technique, because he already learned it, and all he need was access to his qi and neigong.

ayo, you explain it very easy to understand, but just only for Asian people, Westerners who don't at least define wuxia or wushu, a real martial art and fiction martial art or many many thing related to that universe, they will never get how deep of it

To Westerners, Kung Fu Hustle is just a silly martial art movie, but to the Chinese, it's nostalgic satire that parodies scenes, characters, and locations from Chinese cinema and day time television. Pig Sty Alley actually is actually a location in a Chinese series. The Buddhist Palm that the guy claims to have learned is actually an ongoing joke in Chinese television and literature. It's not a real move in martial arts. That's why when he tried using it as a kid nothing happened when he hit the bully with it. Everything from the gambling hall fight to the lion's roar to the hidden masters and even the Lovers duo. They all came from different Chinese television.

At time of writting this I haven't finished the video yet, but I wanted to point out a few references you guys maybe missed. The blood scene in the assylum is a The Shining reference, the scene in the begining where the Axe Gang is dancing is a reference to Westside Story, the scene where he holds the mute girl in front of the poster I thought was Casablanca...but I could be ompletely wrong on that one. Obviously you got the roadrunner and cartooonish humor. This movie is a lovelettter to other movies and martial arts films too. Those are a lot of a-listers in chinese cinema. There's loads of things I'm leaving out here, but I love this movie so much, just randomly came across it one day and instantly it was one of my favorite movies.

The first time I watched the knife scene, I laughed so hard that I literally couldn’t breathe. Unfortunately there’s no sequel, however, there has been rumors that he might consider doing a sequel in the near future. I doubt it though since he has retired for so many years. You should check out his other movies. The one that is just as good as this one is Shaolin Soccer. A lesser known one to the Western audience is the God of Cookery. Many of his other ones are more steep in Chinese cultures and folklores so might be harder for foreign viewers to appreciate.

As a kid who grew up in the 90s, Stephen Chow is the GOAT! He is all-in-one package. And personally for me, this movie is his GREATEST. I just LOVE it. I still remember my stomach felt crammed from laughing too much after coming back from the cinema. And since this movie was released in 2005, it was the era of Matrix trilogy and 1st Spiderman movie, thus the slo-mo camera movements, and the two quotes, "He is The One" and "With great power, comes great responsibility." If I am not mistaken, mid of this year, Stephen Chow confirm that there will be Kungfu Hustle 2, but he's still ironing out lots of things, and he also has other movies to complete. But for me, I don't mind the wait, he could take his time to create another Kungfu Hustle, but please don't take too long.

There's a lot of martial arts in China's history, they usually get exaggerated in movies/novels. There're famous/iconic moves in these martial arts such as "the Buddhist Palm" (as seen in the movie), "18 Dragon Subduing Palms", etc. The ending is just a reference to those moves. So sadly, there's no other part to this movie.

The reason why you think the moves are smooth and nice, is because all these are done by real martial artists, they have the training, physical form, strength, stamina to show for it. And they train continuously as their profession. A lot of stuntmen actually get hit, kicked, smacked and fell down for real. all for work. Like Jackie Chan. All the fight scene choreography by done by Mr. Yuen Woo-ping, who is a Hong Kong martial arts choreographer and film director, and also the action choreographer of The Matrix (1999). Sad to tell you, this is the last movie that Stephen Chow acted as the main character back in 2004. There is no sequel. He directed, written and produced other movies since, but did not act as main character anymore. So you are looking at his prime moment now as actor + director + writer + producer when he is 42 years old, and as you can see, he is physically fit and martial art trained. Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is Stephen Chow's masterpiece. You guys enjoyed the comedy a lot, but it is also filled full of references paying tribute, like really a lot of references from western and eastern culture. but its understandable the new generation era from other countries would not know the references he placed in this movie, except for the english movies references, like the blues brothers, looney tunes, spiderman, matrix, the shining, forrest gump, etc. Also the movie looked really good and flows well because generally Hong Kong are masters in movie making. You guys noticed the music, sound design. But you probably did not have time to discover the creative styles and cinematography, complete with serious tone, complex story and artistic scenes. Its all beautiful work. You should watch Shaolin Soccer (2001) next since you liked Kung Fu Hustle (2004). Please get the original hong kong version (cantonese language) with original english subtitles and original cut of 113 minutes. Pls dont get the Americanized version (which is also cantonese language) but it has been cut short 26 minutes (87 mins), english overlays over chinese words, simplified english subtitles, sound effects are changed, some music are replaced with english music. Its terrible artistically. Fun fact : It is because of the success of Shaolin Soccer (2001) that Stephen Chow got his biggest budget ever to make Kung Fu Hustle (2004). Fun fact : Stephen Chow was originally supposed to direct Dragonball Evolution (2009). but it was switched to a director who has no idea what dragonball is about. Can you imagine what Stephen Chow could have created.

This movie is about the past (real kung fu action) the present (using wire to assist) and the future (using CGI) of the Kung Fu movies.

It's action comedy because it's Stephen Chow! 😂 The main character is the director. Shaolin Soccer is another masterpiece of his, also an action comedy. Let's see if you recognizes his friends in this movie and in Shaolin Soccer
