Regarding Kai and Oogway - it's somewhat implied that it's not Kai that changed, but Oogway. Prior to Oogway's injuries, they were both warlords of dubious nature, and Oogway's time with the pandas taught him a more peaceful way of being. Then, he travelled to the birthplace of King Fu (from kp1) and combined his own knowledge of combat with the philosophy he picked up from the pandas to create Kung Fu. Some of this is my own headcanon, but the warlord thing is at least pretty heavily implied.

That makes sense. If Kai was a warlord, then surely Oogway was one too, since they were close friends and even fought together. Also, maybe it's just me, but it did seem like Kai's fighting style was different from Kung Fu. He didn't do forms or stances like the other practitioners did, he was just good at fighting, had good combat sense, and had great strength (probably because of him collecting chi). That's also why I didn't like him as a villain as much as I liked Tai Lung. Tai Lung seemed like he had great mastery, you could see it in the way he fought. He also had that intimidating death glare. Kai, on the other hand, was just plainly strong, probably because of chi. In the end, this was a martial arts series, and that's why I prefer Tai Lung's fighting style over Kai's.

Yeah, kai suddenly turning evil outta nowhere didn't make much sense to me. Him already being evil works much better narratively. Oogway is a lot like uncle iroh now that I think about it.

Ping is like..top-tier father/adopted father. That line of "It doesn't mean less for me, it means more for Po", just..it hits so fuckin' hard.

The greatest thing about this movie is how they show that despite being at the pinnacle of Kung Fu and near enlightenment, neither Po nor Oogway really seem all that serious about it. Because that was never what it was about. It was simply knowing who you were, being that person and then understanding where you are in the world. Honestly those two would have an absolute blast just hanging out and geeking out about Kung Fu if they had the chance, and that's wonderful.

One thing I noticed abt Kai that makes me respect him a lot, especially as a character is that he never uses Oogways Jade form. This is probably due to how much respect he has for Oogway since they were friends before becoming enemies at the end of day. Another thing I picked up on is Tai lung got skadooshed which means he was also sent to the spirit realm and that means, Kai also probably turned him into a Jade warrior. Although we never see him change back when Kai is defeated so my assumption is Kai is making a return for the next movie.

Can we just point out that Tigress 100% trusts Po putting her in the Wuxi Finger Hold? No matter how klutzy he is, she trusts him with her life! ETA: Still feel robbed we didn't get as much of Po with the Five this movie.

I know a lot of people consider this movie the weakest of the trilogy, but it's my favorite after the second one. J.K. Simmons is incredible as General Kai and his villain theme goes so hard. I love Po's struggle to become a teacher and master chi, and I love how well his biological and adoptive fathers eventually get along so well. That thing Mr. Ping said about how we sometimes "do the wrong things for the right reasons" has always stuck with me. Overall, a pretty good conclusion to the trilogy.

If you want more Kung Fu Panda without watching the entire animated series, there were 4 short films released with each movie. Secrets of the Furious Five, Secrets of the Masters, Secrets of the Scroll, and Kung Fu Panda Holiday. They're really good and mostly animated in the 2D stylized animation. I think you should check them out.

There's actually three TV shows... 1. Legends of Awesomeness: It's basically adventures of Po and the Five that we don't get to see in the movies. 2. Paws of Destiny: Po is at the panda village and teaching little pandas. 3. The Dragon Knight: I don't know much about this one, except for the fact that it's on Netflix and it's serialised.
