Washington was born in 1732 so that must have been the occasion to write this. It's always great to think you've heard a lot of Sousa and then to hear a new one. This is really first rate - wow! What a national treasure along with this band that he loved!

Looking further, Washington was born Feb 22, 1732 and Sousa died March 6, 1932 after a long career of writing and performing.

Flawless, outstanding performance! I've always felt this to be Sousa's most technically demanding march, especially for the trombone section. You guys came through again at the most demanding part of the piece. Awesome clarinet performance, too.

What a band, must be the finest of America's Military Musicians, absolutely the definitive versions of Sousa's marches. I've not been able to spot any badges of rank on the musicians, is there a tradition of not displaying rank in this unit?

The US Marine Band has not displayed rank insignia on their concert dress uniform since the mid-1950s. Everyone onstage ranks from Staff Sergeant (E-6) to Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-9). Perhaps apocryphal, but I was told it was a budgetary issue. As the dress blouses are issued, the rank insignia, once removed, leave stitch holes which cannot be covered up. A blouse turned in with E-9 insignia will leave stitch holes which cannot be covered by the smaller E-6 insignia.

I'd hate to march at this pace, but IMO this is one that should be played at 130bpm. USMB does a great job of keeping it lively that is lacking in slower recordings.
@tristanwhite20125 жыл бұрын
@@LouisE-mp8lx Look at JPS himself conducting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4LNh4imosyGn6s. Don't think that's 120bpm! (Of course it could have always be sped up). But JPS did stress that his marches were mainly for concert, rather than marching, use. In that case he was determined to "get the blood moving" and liven the show with brisk performances.

Heck, I’ve never played trombone in my life, but I’ve read orchestration textbooks, so I know how it’s done, and the very first time I heard this (in a concert by the New Sousa Band), my eyes bugged out, and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It reminded me of the scene in the old movie where Sousa demonstrates to a hapless auditioning cornet player how “Carnival of Venice” SHOULD be played.

This march did not get its' proper due and credit for several reasons. Sousa died within weeks of premiering this March. He did not have a band to record it before he died. He had broken up his last band in 1931, so it was not promoted by touring or by recording. I do not have any idea if RCA Victor, his longtime record company, would have had any interest in recording it. Even if it had been recorded, record sales were way down in the depression year of 1932, so it is doubtful it would have sold well. I first heard this march as background music in the movie "Jim Thorpe, All American", when Thorpe witnessed the opening ceremonies of the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. I will give the producers and writers of that movie credit for including it.
