I love all of John Philip Sousa's marches. He had an enormous impact not only on American marches per se, but on marches from around the world.

I love the way Sousa gives the lower and middle brass sections interesting parts... not just Oompah, Oompah!

That's what makes Sousa's counterpoints on par with the great classical composers. His work sounds like he writes his concert band arrangements as if they're symphonic arrangements.

This was the first march I played when I got into my high school wind ensemble. I had so much fun, doing all the trumpet double tonguing and stuff... John Phillip Sousa, you are a man of incredible talent! May you forever rest in peace.

I notice other Marine Band versions of SF have a trumpet fanfare on the pickup to bar 17 that is omitted in this version (0:20, 0:36), just wondering if anyone knows the origin of this fanfare and what makes it "authentic" Sousa or otherwise? This is almost undoubtedly one of JPS's top three marches of all time, and he described it as the best piece he ever wrote. However you rate it in comparison to his other works, certainly the simplicity of the three-times repeated trio goes to show how immortal one simple four-note, sixteen bar melody can be.
@LyleFrancisDelp4 жыл бұрын
It should be understood that many of Sousa’s marches underwent an “updating” of scoring as the band instrumentation became standardized in the early 20th century. Sousa did not write the original for trumpets, or 2nd flute, or 2nd sax, or horns in F. Also, he didn’t use low clarinets back in the 1880s. When all of these became standard in the band instrumentation, it became necessary (to some at Carl Fischer) to bring Sousa’s great marches up to date. I believe an in house arranger was tasked with doing this, and they added the trumpet parts, as well as the extra flute, sax, and low clarinets. These parts were not originally from Sousa’s hand. In our edition, we returned to Sousa’s version as he performed it from his Encore Books.

I never knew what I just read about this march. As a child, I had an album of Sousa's marches but didn't know the names of any except "Stars and Stripes Forever." I shouldn't have to ask, but did Sousa write "The Thunderer?" Jean Shepherd wrote a piece about his high school band and mentioned that one in particular.

Probably a copyright issue as the sheet music is held at the USMC Band Music Library. They hold performing rights I think. Not sure how it works in the United States. Best contact their CIMIC or Press Department of the band and enquire. Or submit a Freedom of Information request and ask very nicely?

Ngl I do not like playing this cause Sousa gave third clarinet our altissimo range. Which yes first and second is a lot higher but it’s still high for third clarinet. And the rhythms are interesting. So yeah don’t like it. But it’s a beautiful price that I gotta play for this NJROTC inspection thing. Which I atleast get out of three/four classes to do
