In England we call it 'brown sauce', the famous brands are HP and Daddies, but most supermarkets have their own branded versions. It's used more with pork products than with other meats in my experience. A passable replacement for Branston pickle on a ploughmans lunch if your Branstons jar is empty..

As a Brit I can't say I've ever had brown sauce (that's what we call HP, Daddies et al.) on steak, I don't class it as a steak sauce, it's better with bacon/sausage sandwiches or a full English breakfast. If you absolutely must have a sauce with your steak then leave it to the peppercorn or blue cheese, but if your steak is good then you really don't need a sauce at all.

OK so the hp brown sauce is definitely not for streaks. The brits tend to use it with the full English breakfast, presumably because of its high vinegar content it somewhat balances the flavours of the fried items or something like that, I've never really liked that sauce personally. As for your cottage pie, folks usually add carrots alongside the peas and those 3 get drowned in a beef gravy before the mash goes on top. I had to ask my Mrs about that because I used to have my own special recipe to make it with my preferred veg.

As a fellow brit I would NEVER put HP Brown sauce on Steak. As many have said it's normally a breakfast sauce, sometimes you MIGHT find some in a Fish & Chip shop although it's more likely the Fruity flavor version than the original. (Fruity version is sweeter and less tart than the original). Honestly the only thing that comes to mind for anything going on Steak in the UK is putting Boveril on it. Although thats basically just slapping Beef Extract on Beef and it's better in a stew or soup.

I learned a long time ago from an old man that ran a corner diner… The best way to cook a steak is over fire (charcoal) with a mix of A-1 and Heinz 57 steak sauce. You can blend them or use each one on one side. Applied while grilling near the finish, this is how to make steak right! Season your steak with garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Get the grate hot, you want those grill marks!

Oh yeah HP Sauce, it's the best. You can get other brands of Brown sauce in the UK, but HP (Houses of Parliament) sauce is the original and the best. It is a condiment sauce like Ketchup or Mayonnaise not specifically a steak sauce. It's works great with a full English breakfast, a sausage roll, a Cornish pastie, a scotch egg and even some grilled cheese on toast.

I love HP sauce. I always bring some back when I visit my home country of Scotland, not only because it is much cheaper than in Norway, but also because here we only get the glass bottles and not the larger, plastic ones. I also always bring a couple bottles of HP fruity!

Not a Steak sauce, and more than that you dont use it as a marinade or cooking sauce its a condiment, you serve it on the side to dip in. IF you really want to try it right use it on a paper thin beef sandwich or on Flat square slice sausage (yes im scottish) or thick cut bacon on fresh morning rolls... perfection.

Watched the whole thing, UK does NOT use HP for steaks! as a sauce or anything. As someone from the UK, no one uses HP sauce for steak. We use it for fry-up breakfasts and pies

In Canada we love both sauces just makes a steak bite extra good. It's more of a dipping sauce for eat bite.

Guga, A-1 is for dipping, not cooking, and only for a lower quality steak. Probability the same for HP is true.

HP is mostly for dipping or meat sandwiches rather than for cooking, but is occasionally used for stews and pies (including cottage pie). It isn't for steak at all!

Bacon sandwich, that's what HP brown sauce is for. Also try HP Fruity with sausages. (Whisky pepper corn sauce maybe with green peppercorns much more likely)

I make my own version of A1 but not for steaks. I use it as a glaze on meatloaf or I dip fries in it. Sometimes I pour a bit on mashed taters.

A1 on burgers is great on occasion. I used to put A1 on steaks but over time I realized there are better options if you want something on a steak. I have a fantastic Sheppard's pie recipe.

Even in south africa hp is mainly used for bfast like worchestershire or tabasco. Not even by everyone. I use it to make bbq sauce with other ingredients

We use mustard on steak; only old men put HP brown sauce on anything. A1 is almost like HP Brown, but I can't understand why people put either on steaks. Try Dijon mustard on steak, or French brown mustard; but definitely not Colman's (English) or American Yellow mustard ... they'll ruin your steak. Over here in England your side dish was cottage pie because you used beef, a Shepard's pie is made with lamd, and HP brown sause is not used on a steak its best with a full English breakfast (sausage, bacon, fried egg and black pudding) they are the essential 4 things but then you can also add baked beans, fried mushrooms, fried tomatoes, fried bread but toast is also ok and some people now add hash browns although they doesn't turn me on lol : ) x

Hello from the Uk. No one marinades their steaks in HP sauce. Hp is mainly used as a condiment for breakfast like putting it on a bacon butty 🥪.

Nice shepherd's pie (shepherd's when made with lamb, it's called cottage pie when made with beef)!! Right there all the way Guga. On the HP sauce thing, in the UK it's either red or brown sauce as in HP or Ketchup. HP sauce is mainly used on say a sausage and egg sandwich for breakfast. The connection to steaks I don't het. America took the idea of "steak sauce" but using this stuff on a steak is far from what us Brits do. It's also used on things like grilled cheese on toast etc.

HP sauce mixed with honey and maybe some garlic powder is really good if you put it on chicken before you bake it. You usually like chicken quarters with the skin on. I was doing this over 40 years ago. Just be careful you don’t burn it because of the honey.

I'm from the UK and I would never put HP sauce on a steak, Ive never heard of anyone else doing that either, its a bit rough around the edges for that!! Its great on a Full English Breakfast, Bacon Sandwich, Sausages, Beans and Mash, meals like these, but never on a steak. But if thats what you like then go for it!!!!!! but it wouldn't be for me, Steaks need somthing a bit more refined. I sometimes mix it in with Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce to add a bit more acidity if im in a rush and want a really nice punchy BBQ sauce. But be warned!!!!! Dont mess with the UK Army of HP sauce lovers!!!!!! We know where you Cook!!!!! Great Video as always.

As I'm sure you know, HP sauce isn't steak sauce, it's a sweet and sour condiment. Wherever you use ketchup, which we call red sauce, brown sauce (HP) can be a contender depending on your pallette.
