As an Aussie who does competition steak cooking, I’ll tell you I’ve never used it on steak … BUT … if I did I wouldn’t have used salt first, I would have used the chicken salt INSTEAD of salt. Also, don’t put powdered sugar on meat pies😂

As a non competition steak enthusiast. You're right on the money, it replaces salt not an addition for. Shame Gouga used that brand, but i strongly doubt he could have gotten a good takeaway one made by the owners, imported. Question: You ever used vegemite on steak? i fkn love it lol

I respectfully disagree with you - I find tomatoes wholly unappealing. I'd much rather put barbecue sauce on my food than tomato sauce (and yes, I am aware barbecue sauce includes tomatoes - but it also contains other ingredients too, to create a wholly different and much-improved flavour).

Aussie here. There is no MSG of Australia. We just use MSG. Chicken salt is not used like MSG. Chicken salt is just salt with a little extra flavour. In Australia we have charcoal chicken shops in most establiished suburbs. That and fish and chips places are probably the only places you will find chicken salt. Many places don't even use it to marinade their chicken, it's just something a lot of people like to put on their chips instead of salt as it adds extra herby flavours. Chicken salt is just salt and herbs, sometimes it might contain MSG, but the good brands don't. Although we don't put chicken salt on steaks normally, i did recently and it was very very flavoursome, just not the best flavours to complement steak in my opinion.... BTW if we need MSG we go buy MSG. We have a huge Chinese population here with several Chinese restaurants and a Chinese stores in a lot of areas. Chicken salt is nothing more than a dry rub that was specifically created to complement chicken.

Australian here - I'm sorry to say, that is nowhere near an Aussie pie. First you used filet whereas we use the cheaper cuts like chuck because of the fat and collagen that breaks down when stewing the meat to make it rich and tasty. Two - the best pies have a shortcrust base/ shell, which adds to structural rigidity and stops the pie falling apart in your hands. Only the lid of the pie will be puff or flakey pastry. Oh, and gourmet pies may add a touch of Vegemite to the stewed meats to add a boost of umami. Also - with the steaks - you should not have added salt/ pepper/ garlic powder to the chicken salt steak - just the chicken salt would have been enough and might have changed the result.

We don't put chicken salt on steak, or chicken, or any meats for that matter (I mean, I'm sure _someone_ has done it, but it's not "a thing" in Australia). It just goes on hot chips (fries), potato scallops, and other deep-fried bits and pieces from takeaway shops - like those giant dim-sims, spring rolls and chiko rolls. Those little meat pies, the filling seems reasonable enough, but if you put sugar on top, any self respecting Australian would throw it at your face. If you want to know what the "Australian MSG" is, it's simply MSG... Other than that, some chefy tips used for enhancing those deep umami flavours of stews and the like, is to add things like a dash of soy sauce or Marmite - so being Australian we would use Vegemite instead of Marmite. But that's hardly something done by a majority of Australians. Covering an entire steak in chicken salt like that (as well as having already liberally seasoned it with regular salt) would be disgusting. Just _waaay_ too salty

3:58 guga, if you want to make them crispy and flaky, work the dough in cold temp but not frozen, then bake the lower layer first before you put in wet fillings. why in cold temp? the lamination between layers are touching each other when its in room temp, the fat/shortening between layers melt away and its just gonna become clumped dough like what you find in croffle instead of raising puff pastry . when you put in wet filling before baking the bottom layer, they dont have room to raise as flaky puff pastry thats how you get clumped dough

Another Aussie here. Clearly the most recent online marketing by this chicken salt is working. Rewind only a few weeks and this was not considered our version of msg, many homes have it in the pantry but equal numbers or likely more have other brands of chicken salt, this is not the Vegemite of chicken salt where 99% of households have a jar at all times. That said, I do like this brand and my kids put it on chicken nuggets and roast potatoes & fries, but if it’s not in stock I have zero hesitation buying almost any other brand of chicken salt. Yes I know of people putting chicken salt on veggies but never of people putting it on stake…but I’m going to try it on my next sous vide stake..whichever brand I have at the time. I’ll likely use it like salt on a steak per your steak No 2. THANK YOU!

The powdered sugar could make sense if he was specifically going for a sweet and savory meat pie. But it'd probably have been better to use it in a marinade for the meat prior to making the pie and definitely not sprinkled on top like that. (Possibly a marinade of ketchup, worcestershire, raisin paste and brown sugar instead of powdered white)

Edit: I know this is an experiment, and I can appreciate it for that, however it's still a little odd to label this as Australia's MSG... Another Aussie passing through, we only use this on Hot Chips, also the brand 99% of Aussie will use is "Anchor - Chippy Original Chicken Salt".. the one you used tastes like crap in comparison haha. I've never known anyone in my 34 years of life to use this on anything other than battered/crumbed Fried foods or Hot Chips. Also, a pie with icing sugar is bloody weird, never heard of that.. A hot pie + tomato sauce (the aussie slang for Tomato Sauce is "dead horse") is how it goes.

That is the most extravagant meat pie I have ever seen as an Australian. Some interesting ideas for it (generally we mainly use the beef or mince, make the gravy with flour and jus, and add other stuff if we wanna alter the pie, like onions etc.). Powdered sugar is probably not something I would consider mind you. Tomato sauce on top though? That's classic. As an aside, I never actually figured chicken salt was "Australian". I actually thought chicken salt was prevalent in other countries too. I suppose it's cause we to love the stuff a lot. Was a good video to watch overall! Glad to see some other Aussie stuff in there. :)

G'day, Guga. Yeah, someone is telling you porky pies (lies). We usually only use chicken salt on hot chips, aka fries. When you go to a place that sells chips, they have regular salt and chicken salt, and you get the option of which one you prefer. You did a really nice job on the pies by the way, though as others have mentioned, no sugar on your pie, usually a little bit of tomato ketchup. Thanks mate.

😂😂😂😂 Either something got lost in translation or your Ozzie mates pulled a fast one over you Guga. A mince pie is an british desert pie with mince meat that has that powdered sugar over the top. A meat pie is 100% savoury pie. They are also double the size of those tiny pies. Similar to a shepards pie… Although we do make them out of drop bears traditionally which is a much more tender softer meat.

Powder sugar on a pie, may as well just dry age it in vegemite and serve with the vegemite still on. If you want to do justice to a pie, tomato sauce: it contains a little bit of sugar which adds a very low sweetness and tang to the pie. BBQ sauce is an acceptable alternate.

Australian here. Chicken salt is used on fried potatoes, so chips/fries, potato cakes/scallops/fritters (depending which state you live in), and maybe tater tots, but I have never had chicken salt on a steak. That is way too much chicken salt for anything to be edible. It’s an alternative to salt. It’s in the name. Also, who taught you how to make a meat pie? The ingredients in the gravy sauce are wrong. soy sauce? It’s supposed to have tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce and red wine. And sugar on top?! That’s supposed to be tomato sauce/ketchup. Mate, you have made a whole country ashamed. Also, short crust pastry for the base, puff pastry for the lid.
