Actually, it’s not that unusual for white people who grew up in rural South Africa to speak the vernacular. White children who grow up on farms in that area all speak Zulu. What is unique, in this case, is that Mayor Pappas has used his knowledge as a tool of cooperation rather than control. Our country is hugely polarised, so it’s heartening to see this. We need many more leaders like him, who see politics as a vocation to a life of service, rather than a career with prospective financial gain

Chris doesn't only speak the language, his mannerisms portray an understanding of the people he's leading. Watch him pass the phone, that hand coordination and courtesy is representative of someone appreciating you. It's sad that there are people who would like to see such efforts fail. @samazwe
@samazwe Жыл бұрын
@@lm_b5080 Absolutely! I'm in the under 30 demographic and run a small local business. What he has done for black youth owned businesses has been a boon, opening doors for funding and facilitating free business development programs. These were unheard of in the old leadership, and the little opportunities that were available only benefited those who had special connections to the leadership. Along with igniting a sense of pride in our culturally diverse community, he has revived our sports and tourism sectors, which were previously neglected by the old administration. In short, despite the decades of damage and inequality that still need to be reversed from the old guard, there is a glimmer of hope in the horizon. We are tired of being guilted for not supporting a failing party still holding on to it's past freedom-fighting past. There is a great sense of a need to move on from all the race politics and get things done interms of economic development and service delivery. That's where the majority of young black voters are as we head to the polls next year!

Do you know that the City of Cape Town under the dynamic young leadership of Mayor Geordin Hill Lewis is spending 75% of its budget this year on uplifting and building infrastructure in previously disadvantaged areas of the City like Khayelitsha? See " Budget comparison confirms Cape Town delivers the most for the poor while offering ratepayers value for money ", Geordin Hill Lewis, Daily Maverick and " Cape Town breaks all- time record for municipal infrastructure spending ", Cape Business News.

I am so very proud of both the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor of Umngeni! Mr Mayor you have motivated me to learn to speak isiZulu properly. I became so jealous of your fluency in speaking. I realised something whilst watch you in action: this additional skill could really boost the success of really making a difference to my work as a strategy and design consultant! Just learning Zulu would change so much for my stakeholders!!!! Thank you for the inspiration!

I hope he succeeds in his journey to change the province. This is what the SA needs. Years of corrupt ANC government crippled this beautiful and rich country. Examples like Zuma, Eskom, Gupta's just to name a few. This set the country back with poverty and crime. It's time for the new generation to take over and turn it around. Let's look beyond Race, sex, gender etc. It's time for a wave of change.

The corruption and incompetency of ANC led government has not helped at all but let’s not pretend that the problems of inequality and relative deprivation are 29yrs old. It’s not like domestic infrastructure like water, sanitation, electricity, housing, quality education etc were widely available. These are centuries old problems which were deliberately engineered, and will need sober minds to take deliberate measures to fix… not this let’s all hug trees and let bygones be bygones. The fact that they voted this man to be mayor it shows that majority have no malice. Unfortunately the Mayor even if he had the best intentions is in the wrong vehicle for that. Democratic Alliance does not believe in redressing these historical injustices in particular denial of access to facilities and equal opportunities by the previous apartheid government.

70% of the Westen Cape budget is towards rural and under developed areas. Considering cost in major Cities are much higher this should be 60:40 and not 30:70. I also only heard amount the Cape Town or it may be the whole of the Western Cape, not sure but the principle applies. They are doing more than we get to hear about
