Iris Guillemard is a Ph.D student at University of Paris-Nanterre / UMR AnTET (France) and University of the Witwatersrand / School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies (South Africa). Her study focuses on the transition from hunter-gatherer to herder communities in the SLCA area (Shashe-Limpopo Confluence Area).
She agreed to tell us a few words about the difference in the French and South African research traditions.

In the light of the 'Wonders of Rock Art | Lascaux Cave and Africa' exhibition, Iris Guillemard will talk with Karim Sadr (Wits University) as part of the public lecture series 'Rock Art and Symbolic Expression | A Southern Africa - France Dialogue', on July 3rd 2018 at Origins Centre, Johannesburg.

What is 'Wonders of Rock Art | Lascaux Cave and Africa' ?
Until 1st October 2018, an exact reproduction of over 2 000 figures painted on the walls of the iconic French Lascaux cave is exhibited at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg. For the very first time, French rock art is displayed next to some of the world's oldest instances of human graphic expression, which earned Southern Africa the title of "Cradle of Humankind". Some artworks are dated up to 100.000 years ago...
