My mum did a Slum Tour in Mumbai, when she traveled to India last year. I scolded her for doing this, when she told me. But when she described it, i didn’t perceive it as all too degrading. The guide showed them all the infrastructure, people have built there. There are a lot of different shops all over. Barbers, tailors, leather shops, electricians, all sorts auf craftsmanship, aso.. People recycle whatever comes from the richer parts of the Town. Local authorities know how much big towns profit from the slums. To them it´s a sort of waste management. So they are trying to preserve them, whereas the government would like them to disappear.The guide was brought up in this slum. He will soon have a masters degree, because his parents put all their means in his education. Still, i think my mum, who normally is a friendly and well behaved person, should have restrained herself from taking pictures of little kids in dark, deplorable rooms. I think the guides have to intervene in this cases. Tourists as a mass are stupid and know no respect. They have to get educated.

@mottedreissig7874
@mottedreissig7874 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ravenkiko This is not my point of view. According to the tour guide, if they were to remove the slums, the cities would be buried in their waste within a couple of days. This is, why they don´t touch the slums. Supporting or protecting impoverished areas would include sewage systems, electricity, any kind of infrastructure. But they are denying those people any help, because the slums are „illegal.“

I’m going to NYC and London later this year and would like to visit some poor and deprived areas - does anyone have some recommendations? I hear that Camden, NJ and Luton, Beds are great! Has anyone been to these places and if so can you recommend a local guide that gives money back to the community.

When I was in Joburg aka Johannesburg back in 2002 I had both the honor and privilege of staying at Lilliesleaf. It was a very special experience for me to learn and see where Nelson Mandela and other revolutionaries used to hide out and were arrested during the fight to end apartheid. Truly learning how "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter". The U.S was calling the revolutionaries terrorists meanwhile a fellow African from the north was funding Nelson Mandela's cause. So wouldn't the man or country who helped the cause of fighting and ending apartheid also be considered a freedom fighter... but that man was called a "mad dog " by the U.S.. That's correct Muammar Gaddafi was the man who help fund Nelson Mandela's revolution against apartheid and Mandela never forgot that and became very close friends with Gaddafi after being released from being imprisoned. Mandela even referred to Gaddafi as the Guide Gaddafi. Mandela even ripped Obama a new ass when asked why would he invite Gaddafi to South Africa. I still have no clue why Jim Jefferies moved to the U.S when he's so much more of a humanitarian and realist than the warmongering irrational fascists of the US.

I can only speak for myself, but I know why someone would want to make such tours: If you save the money to travel the world for two weeks a year, you also want to get to know the people and culture. Also you feel the urge to give these people something back. Because the most beautiful places in the world are in some of the poorest countries. So you can either choose between staged cultural events (e.g. a village that 'performs' for you) or 'poverty tourism'. I personally find both options very, very cringy. But I also don't to hide the walls of an All Inclusive hotel. So, what's the right thing to do?
@jglobetrotter2830
@jglobetrotter2830 5 жыл бұрын
In the Philippines I paid a private guide directly. He took me around the island on his motorcycle. I didn't ask for a "poverty tour" (imagine he would have been offended if I did) but he took me to the neighborhood his family lived and told me about the houses and restaurants, and little places. Took me to the local church, then to the big fancy catholic church, then to see the natural sights, then to do touristy things like zipline. I probably ridiculously "overpaid" him, but it was the off-season, and I am sure he needed the money, and the five or ten bucks I could have bargained down just don't mean as much to me. Plus, it was a fantastic experience, totally worth it.

@@jglobetrotter2830 - Nobody is fucking asking for poverty tours. This is just something that guilty white westerners have called it to make themselves feel better for being rich without actually having to do something constructive to alleviate poverty.
