South Africa's university dropout crisis

Recent studies have revealed a disturbing trend about South Africa's higher education academic progress trends.
This relates to a high tertiary dropout rate, leaving many families worse off than they were before the dropout joined university.
Although limited university allocations make headlines at the start of the year, South Africa's dropout crisis is occurring as first-year students move into the second semester of 2024.

School fees are high and they come to the reality that they won't have jobs or will earn the same amount as a pick n pay employee. Which is bad considering they have a degree

The curriculum system has been a very big issue and the issue of bench marks .A 30% free mark and a student adds a 30% of their effort and now we have a 30% average student moving into university institution.They find if difficult to cope .Monetary issues are secondary the issue is the child wel l prepared for the prospective area of study.The curriculum needs a total.overhaul

Nobody gets accepted in SA universities with a 30% pass. The 30% is just created to increase the pass rate thats why you find a matriculant with a soo called bachelor pass not being accepted to varsity. Side note.. I went to varsity with people from private schools and former model c schools they themselves were struggling in varsity.

University admissions are very strict as of late....most kids get straight 100% which makes it harder to get in

In my class there were students from private schools, they themselves were suffering some even dropped out. Varsity is a different ball game

Because admissions are not based purely on merit. If you want to reduce the dropout rate, we need stricter admission requirements that are devoid of racial criteria. Basic education also has a role to play, standards have been dropping consistently to improve throughout in primary and secondary schools, widing the gap between higher school and university. It's too large for many students coming out of our terrible public schooling system.
