I was in Rundu in 1987 on a recovery project, was stationed at 101 workshops in Grootfontein as a Tiffie. The best memories of my life. Respect to every one who served in the SADF!

i was there from 5 Feb 77 until about 25 june 77, was in Pantzer Korps, Staff sergeant Nel Baker he had such a comical moustache, short guy, was such a nice man, but never took nonsense from the other staff, slept in tents close to the airfield, went any times to Bagani on patrol.that part i enjoyed because he never allowed us to do any guard duties as he used the excuse that we can be called out anytime to go on patrol, but rest of army days was not good,

From about 1975 to 1989 many thoudands of South African troopies passed through Rundu, some never to return to the "States". It was a passage for those generations from being school boys to manhood. In retrospect, this was the end of a remarkable era is the history of SA.

in Feb 77 we still rode train from Zeerust to Joburg station, then caught a train to Potchefstroom then to De Aar and then to Grootfontein, was 5 full day on train,was hell train ride, , the food was bad, when we arrived at Grootfontein the Friday morning one of the carriages was completely broken down,, one could look right through the carriage from one side to other side as the 3 month campers who went with us did it,, when we got to Rundu we got them at Bagani , thy had to do a extra 3 months without pay to pay back the damage ,lol luckily we could fly back to Zeerust on a C160 ,

If you refer to the S A Air Force being really quiet during the Rhodesian crisis, you are so very very wrong....make sure of your facts before you start talking crap again
@gotterdammerung55272 жыл бұрын
@@heuwel I'm aware that they "loaned" a few aircraft and flew occasional reconnaissance and transport flights. I was just more or less shocked that considering how close the threat was to home they didn't hit them as hard as the Rhodesians were. In my opinion I just think that a little more anti-communist collaboration between the two would have helped with their major rebel problem because it was obvious that China was going to keep supplying them with red books and RPGs...
@heuwel2 жыл бұрын
@@gotterdammerung5527 I say it again, do some research....they loaned more than a "few" aircraft to fly occasional recces as you say....
