South African TV 1980s

Ripped from a DVD in 2023. DVD compiled by KZbin user RGC198, from a VHS video tape recorded by me.
***Due to the trend of comments on here, I need to mention, that this footage was recorded from the erstwhile SABC Astrasat analogue satellite service in 1997, as part of an historical television retrospective, broadcast one evening on SABC 3.
I am not South African, and was not in South Africa in the early 80s, when this programming was the norm, on the TV channel for "Europeans" prior to partial abolition of Grand Apartheid 1986.
[There were separate channels for "Africans" during that time period featuring different programming and advertising reflecting the ethnicity of the vast majority of South Africans.] ***

Even in the UK funnily enough, provincial accents weren't really accepted until the 1990s. Speaking of Australians though, some of the old cockney Londoners before the 1960s used to have a slightly Australian twang on TV which has completely disappeared today.

RSA had its use by the West towards the Soviet Bloc which is one reason why it survived until just after the end of the Cold War. Yugoslavia was another. Very useful to the West for its non-aligned commitments. Once the Wall came down Yugoslavia was thrown aside by the West onto the trash heap. Yugoslavia and RSA had one major flaw, they were built upon an ethnic/racial fault zone. They were countries existing on borrowed time. Had the Cold War gone on so too would they.

At least I still have my RSA passport and last time I went there few months ago the country still seemed to exist. When folks say "Apartheid was better" what they really mean is that they missed the days where completely segregated white communities didn't have to deal with the fact that the state actively stripped black people of their land, access to education, access to basic public services, access to housing, and citizenship and then cramming them into tiny reservations which made up less than 15% of the country' total land area, devoid of any investment or infrastructure financing, and then being shocked that those regions were cesspools of crime and violence. Why were they? Don't worry about that They are fundamentally saying they miss the days where mass black impoverishment wasn't their problem even though they actively supported a state that did it. What's crazier is how Apartheid is not Jim Crow, apartheid literally ended barely a generation ago; memories of the state police brutalising black kids is still fresh in the minds of many in the country. An ex-work colleague in 2005 showed me a photograph of his home before he left SA for good. With iron gates, razor wire and spot lights his home looked a prison to combat such high rates of crime. Keep in mind that 🇿🇦 dod not have a television station, until 1970’s. Also at three minutes noticed that all the South African people have Anglican accents. Even the commercials are usually narrated by people with English accents Even the Ford commercial had a British dide maybe since they were colonized by the English they thought that American accent was uncivilized? I also know back in the day in many of the commercials were like that, featuring people with English accents 😂
