Very nice. I went a little further with my 13" South Bend and tore it down completely. Gear box, apron, everything. There are a lot of oil wicks that need to be replaced in those things.

Love it,, I've bought and restored 6 atlas lathes in the past 2 year's and a Sheldon horizontal mill,,, just got a 11 inch Logan lathe,, getting ready to sell off the atlas's as prices have tripled since I've gotten them but the Logan and Sheldon I will never sell and will get for free with what I'll make,, can't beat the vintage machines.

Thanks Brett! This is very encouraging for someone like me with an old SB 9B that needs a thorough going-over, but have been intimidated by the dozens of disassembled parts and work involved in a full resto! Great video. 👌

Young man you do good work. Thank you for a very good video. I will give you one word of advice, put a piece of hex stock in a stuck threaded chuck and use an impact wrench to break it loose. The impact works wonders for old threaded spindles. I have rebuilt many old machines, wish I could still do that kind of work. Again thanks for a neat video.

That’s a great tip! I’m in the middle of restoring a 16” SB that i believe is from early 40’s…. By no means my first vintage or antique shop equip tool i’ve restored but yeah, i have run into that very problem of stuck chucks &, that “natural engineer” part of my brain always wants to way over-think things! 👍🏼 side-note, if you happen to know of an “easy” means of possibly rewiring the original 3 phase 15 hp Westinghouse motor to single phase, please let me know!

I had a heavy 9" that looked just like this and wish I had never sold it. Great lathe, but mine was such a rare version it was a pain to get attachments and parts. Needless to say I had to make many of the extras like follow and steady rest. I believe mine was like a 1937 if memory serves. Awesome video!

WOW! Granted, it's not a resto, but to bring that rusty hulk back to functional life is a feat unto itself. I recently purchased a 1942 SB10R (199-Y), 36" bed. Badly worn ways, and scored spindle and bearings, but I might be able to make it work. Thanks for the inspiration!

There will always be a soft spot in me for the old South Bend lathes. The first full sized lathes I ran were the classic 13" machines in a college continuing education classroom. I recently purchased a 1988 model Taiwanese lathe and didn't intend to paint it but by the time the whole thing is degreased, painting is just a small step.

Have the same lathe ,loved the love journey you took to restore it, they are wonderful machines, 1946? Next time try a motorcycle/ snowmobile impact driver for your stuck straight and Phillips flat head machine screws. It uses special bits and a surface you hit with a hammer to pound the bit into the slot at the same time as it twists the screws loose. The impact of your hammer drives a helix within the driver, same principle as a rotary jackhammer. They can be used to tighten or loosen based on how you preload them i.e. twist them by hand first. Rarely a screw they wont loosen. Great job. Were you able to find anyway to tighten or adjust the play on the in feed. The crank that moves the tool perpendicular to the lathe, mine is loose.

If you need a new variable speed pulley, Speed Selector makes pulleys that replace the Reeves, Hi-Lo, TB Woods and Lovejoy pulleys that went out of business or got bought. Most are in stock or Speed Selector will custom make if needed. They have an actual engineering department; very helpful.

I didn't see you install the felt in the bearing ex pander , do you need them? Mine came out in parts . I can't find any videos on shimming up the spindle Did you have one or know of one? I'm in the middle of a rebuild of a south bend 10 heavy. Very nice video, Thanks

I would not have left them out. Yes, you do need them. They are placed under the expander on each side. This is a critical part to keeping the bearings lubricated.

I’m in the market for a lathe. I’ve been looking at the soutbend heavy 10. Is that the best lathe for chambering and threading barrels? Also having a hard time finding anything close to Texas. Seems the majority of them are in the Midwest. I really enjoy your channel and would appreciate any insight on purchasing a lathe. Thanks for your time
@precisionmachineshed9 ай бұрын
If you find one in good shape, they are more than capable of doing a barrel. That being said if you are doing anything other than hobby barrels, I would suggest something better. I have a Harrison M300 for my main lathe and a really nice 10L as a backup lathe. Day to day turning barrels on the M300 is much easier and quicker, but I do it as a business so time is money.

@@precisionmachineshed yes sir I have a small rifle business I’m trying to expand my capabilities. So what else would compare to a Harrison M300 so I can keep an eye out while I’m looking? Also how do you go about looking for lathes? I’ve just been searching internet and eBay. Thanks again for your input
@precisionmachineshed9 ай бұрын
Facebook and searching, that's about it. As for other lathes, there are too many to list. A lot of guys use grizzly or precison Mathers. In general, one with high precison bearings and not all worn out along with 1-3/8" or larger spindle bore will do the job. Depends on how you chamber. I'm looking for a bigger lathe to do more ELR builds.

It is in working condition. The gearbox may not need any work. I have a lathe from the 50s and the gearbox is in near perfect condition. Regular maintenance is sometimes all you need. While I probably would have gone a little further, it did go from non functional to a working lathe.
