Thanks! We contacted the Tasmanian Museum when we got back to Hobart & they were great. Turns out it was an Australian Fur Seal.

Antarctic beech doesn’t exist in Tasmania. What you were looking at was Nothofagus cunninghamii (myrtle beech) which is found in cool temperate rainforests and mixed forests in Tasmania.

Good call, I’m from NSW where the beech are the Antarctic, mainly in Barrington Tops & New England NPs where I’ve done quite a bit of walking over the years.
