The South Coast Track is a challenging multi day hike in South West Tasmania that follows the rugged southern coastline of Tasmania from Melaleuca to Cockle Creek.
0:00 Introduction
0:19 Day 1 - Melaleuca to Point Eric
3:55 Day 2 - Point Eric to Louisa Bay
7:36 Day 3 - Louisa Bay to Louisa River
10:25 Day 4 - Louisa River to Little Deadmans Bay
13:16 Day 5 - Little Deadmans Bay to Osmiridium Beach
17:21 Day 6 - Osmiridium Beach to Granite Beach
19:54 Day 7 - Granite Beach to South Cape Bay
23:06 Day 8 - South Cape Bay to Cockle Creek
24:56 Conclusion
I accidentally dropped the Sony in a creek at South Cape Bay, but luckily it only malfunctioned temporarily and has no permanent damage. Overall the hike was just incredible.
Shot entirely with the Sony A7C (16-35mm F2.8 GM), iPhone 11 Pro Max and the iPhone 13 Pro.

A great film which demonstrates the real difficulties of that country. I walked the South Coast Track 53 years ago, East to West and thence to Lake Peddar, before it was drowned, three weeks in all. We met Denny King and his daughters and spent a few days at Port Davey. While the South Coast was very beautiful, it was without a doubt, the hardest part of the trip and it wasn't as wet as your trip! The Iron Bound range lives vividly in my memory still .....!! The pay off was experiencing the Western Arthurs and spending a few days at Lake Peddar. It was a life changing walk.

Thanks Jeff. I am glad to hear you had a life changing walk out there. I imagine the track would have been a lot tougher back then without some of the recent duckboard improvements, etc. Thanks for watching. I hope it helped you relive some of those moments 👍

Great video Aaron. It brought back great memories of when I did it in 1985. We couldn't land at Melaleuca beach because of the high tide, so we had to land at Melaleuca airstrip, which added a couple of hours to our hike. The upside of this was that we met Denny King, who was the only resident of SW Tasmania. I'm surprised your video camera malfunctioned when it fell in the water. I thought Go Pros or the like were waterproof.
@AaronGrayOutdoors
@AaronGrayOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Thanks David! I’m sure the track would have been a lot different back in 85. I don’t use a GoPro. I carry and film with a full frame mirror less camera. Luckily, after being left off to dry for two weeks it started working normally again 👍

Hi Aaron, absolutely amazing video here once again, you have such great skill at cinematography and story telling. I'd just like to ask you about the water you get from the streams do you treat it in any way or is it safe to drink as it is? thank you so much!
@lukeblackeby28
@lukeblackeby28 Жыл бұрын
Also do you bring lots of camera batteries or somehow charge as you go?
@AaronGrayOutdoors
@AaronGrayOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Thanks Luke, really appreciate it. As it’s the SW of Tasmania (there is no infrastructure, just wilderness) the water is generally safe to drink directly out of the streams. If the water flows anywhere near grazing lands or humans I would always treat it first!

I think I carried two spare batteries for this trip. I usually also carry 2x 10000 mAh power banks too and can use them to also charge if required. The Sony Z batteries are pretty efficient though and tend to last long periods.

Beautiful, thank you. I have to ask, what's the deal with walking through creeks etc with your boots on, do you just have drenched feet for the rest of the day/trip. Or do you have some super boots your wearing that I should know about?! Thank you
@AaronGrayOutdoors
@AaronGrayOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The entire track was pretty wet and muddy at that time of the year so it would have been impossible to prevent the wet shoes / feet, so often it’s better to just embrace it. I generally walk in trail runners so they are fairly quick to dry. No tricks or anything super here, although I wish! I hope that helps 👍
@NeilJ894

@@AaronGrayOutdoors certainly does help.. Thanks so much for the quick reply. I hear you, it makes sense to walk in trail runners and embrace the trench foot! Good advice, thanks and keep on hiking :)

@AaronGrayOutdoors
@AaronGrayOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It’s a great hike. I walk in a pair of trail runners - Topo Athletic Ultraventure Pro. I find them light, super grippy, quick to dry and more comfortable when wet compared to boots. I did some ankle damage a few years back and had to wear boots whilst I rebuilt the strength but overall do prefer walking in the lighter shoes.

@AaronGrayOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Thanks! November is fantastic, same month as when we did it. Although, you should expect the track to be fairly wet and muddy and most crossings to be quite high at that time of the year. You can’t keep the water out of your shoes, you just have to embrace it. Have a great time out there!
