Progress on the South Coast Track upgrade..
Work is now under way on improvements to the South Coast Track as the second part of a four-year, $2 million project to ensure we can continue to provide a world class walking experience in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
The South Coast Track is one of Tasmania’s Great Bushwalks, attracting approximately 1,200 walkers per year. The 87 km track runs between Melaleuca and Cockle Creek. Walkers must either fly in, travel by boat, or walk in to Melaleuca.
However, track erosion, overgrown areas, difficulty accessing beaches along the walk and infrastructure in need of repair has contributed to a decline in the overall experience over recent years.
Planned works include infrastructure upgrades on priority sections of track from South Cape Rivulet to Lion Rock and the Buoy Creek Plains to prevent erosion, installation of new toilets at major campsites, and improvement of all beach access points and water crossings. In particular, a track re-route over the Black Cliffs will significantly improve visitor safety.
This will build on the work already completed, which includes track maintenance and delivery of improved toilet facilities, brush cutting and windfall clearing on more than 40 kilometres of track from Cockle Creek to the Ironbounds, construction of 900 metres of new boardwalk in the Deadmans Bay/Turua Beach area and new footbridges at Melaleuca Inlet and Moth Creek.
