To better understand the reality of South Korea. 1. Syngman Rhee (1948-1960) - overthrown 2. Yun Bo-song (1960-1962) - overthrown 3. Park Chung-hee (1962-1979) - assassinated 4. Choi Kyu-ha (1979 - 1980) - overthrown by military coup 5. Chun Doo-hwan (1981-1988) - sentenced to death after completing his presidential term. 6. Roh Tae-woo (1988-1993) - sentenced to 22 years in prison after completing his presidential term. 7. Kim Young-sam (1993-1998) - imprisoned before his presidential term. As president, he secured the conviction of his two predecessors. 8. Kim Dae-jung (1998-2003) - Impeached and sentenced to death before becoming president (later pardoned). Nobel Peace Prize laureate. 9. Roh Moo-hyun (2003-2008) - Impeached (overturned by the Constitutional Court). Under investigation for corruption after his term ended. Committed suicide 10. Lee Myung-bak (2008-2013) - Arrested after completing his presidential term and is currently under arrest on corruption charges. 11. Park Geun-hye (2013-2016) - Impeached. Arrested on corruption charges. 24 years in prison. It is immediately clear that this is a model democratic state with rich traditions.

South Korea's President: "Check THIS out"
@타마-w3j
@타마-w3j Күн бұрын
As a South Korean, The first ridiculous move was that, while I’m not sure about how things work in the U.S., in Korea, martial law can be canceled with a majority vote from both the ruling and opposition parties. Knowing full well that the president's ruling party allies were outnumbered by the opposition, declaring martial law was a foolish act. The second issue was the absurdity of declaring martial law and then immediately going home for the day. Historically, declaring martial law is a highly sensitive issue that stirs up painful memories for our country, and doing so in an inappropriate and unjustified situation was utterly nonsensical. As an ordinary citizen with no interest in politics, even I found these actions outrageous and concerning, leaving a strong impression on people like me who normally don’t pay much attention to political matters. It simply looked like the president throwing a tantrum.
@christopherlane5238
@christopherlane5238 Күн бұрын
I hope everything turns out well for you and your country. That being said, normal people SHOULD pay attention to politics. Look what happened in America in our last election. Lost of us decided to not actively take part in the election and we ended up with a lunatic in the White House. I beg you to take an active part in your countries political process.
@타마-w3j
@타마-w3j Күн бұрын
@@christopherlane5238 Thank you for your concern. Surprisingly, the martial law declaration was revoked just six hours after it was announced, which was as absurd as the initial declaration itself. Given the ridiculous circumstances under which it was imposed, the outcome was entirely predictable. I hope this incident serves as a wake-up call for young people in South Korea to take an interest in politics, even if just a little.

@@JooDawg The Republic of Korea Army is a national resource and workforce, and as such, it cannot hold any political beliefs. Rather than supporting any particular side, it operates under the government. Since the government is created by the citizens, the military's duty is to protect the country, safeguard citizens' assets, and ensure their safety. Ultimately, both the government and the military belong to the people, and therefore, their support should be for the citizens.

Hi, guys. I'm Korean. President Yoon has become a lame duck following the general elections. He faces significant legislative challenges and is embroiled in various scandals involving his wife. Recently, the national budget was slashed, and he was unable to veto the cuts. In response, he made the shocking decision to press the nuclear button. What is most surprising is that even the Prime Minister of South Korea was unaware that President Yoon was about to declare martial law. This situation has dramatically increased the likelihood of an impeachment motion against him. Furthermore, he now risks being charged with treason for inciting a national rebellion.

It was a desperate situation for the people who were awake and at the scene, though. It was a very clumsy coup, but could well have worked if the opposition wasn't fast enough to act. The troops were sent to arrest the main opposition leader, the Speaker of the House, the ruling party leader, and even some anti-gov journalists - it could've been entirely different story if some of them did get apprehended, and you and those people you talked to who shrugged it off now could've woken up in a military dictatorship this morning.

The statement reflects a harsh and cynical perspective on South Korean political history, which is marked by a pattern of dramatic downfalls for former presidents. It’s rooted in the historical reality that many South Korean leaders have faced legal troubles, public disgrace, or even tragic ends after leaving office. Here’s why someone might say this: Context of South Korean Political History: 1. Historical Precedent: • Park Chung-hee (assassinated in 1979). • Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo (both imprisoned for corruption and their roles in suppressing democracy). • Roh Moo-hyun (committed suicide after being implicated in a corruption scandal). • Park Geun-hye (impeached and imprisoned for corruption). This pattern creates a perception that leaving office often exposes presidents to severe consequences, whether due to political rivalries, public backlash, or unresolved scandals. 2. Current Political Climate: The suggestion that declaring martial law is a way for the current president (Yoon Suk Yeol) to retain power may reflect fears of a president resorting to authoritarian measures to protect themselves. This could be seen as an attempt to avoid accountability or the potential for retribution after leaving office. Emotional Reaction to the Statement: This statement paints a grim view of leadership in South Korea, and it might evoke a mix of empathy, frustration, and concern: • Empathy: It highlights the immense pressure and risks associated with South Korea’s presidency, where political and public scrutiny can lead to tragic outcomes. • Frustration: It suggests systemic issues in South Korea’s political and judicial systems, which might lack safeguards to ensure fair treatment of former leaders. • Concern: If true, such a dynamic could perpetuate cycles of authoritarianism or extreme political polarization, undermining democratic institutions. Why Someone Would Say This: • Cynicism about Political Power: They might believe that the stakes of losing power in South Korea are so high that leaders will go to extreme lengths to maintain control. • Skepticism of Reform: The statement suggests a lack of faith in South Korea’s ability to address its political culture and protect former leaders from disproportionate consequences. • Historical Observation: It’s also likely an acknowledgment of repeated patterns in South Korean history, which might feel inevitable to an observer familiar with the country’s politics. Overall, the statement is a critical reflection on the challenges of leadership in South Korea, and it underscores the tension between political accountability and the need for stability and fairness in a democratic society.

Well Kim Yong Sam getting the predecessors sentenced was a good thing since those two weren't technically president since it was dictatorship made by military coup and they massacred civilians who cried out for democracy but you are correct almost all the president had bad ending since the opposing party is trying to undermine them. It is like that saying no human is 100 percent clean. If we shake them enough, there is bound to be dust coming out of them.

As a Korean, I can clearly explain this issue to you. The political landscape in South Korea is quite similar to that of the United States, with both left-wing and right-wing factions. 1. The Left Over the past seven years, it has come to light that there are many spies among the left-wing factions in South Korea. Additionally, radical feminists, such as those who advocate for movements like the "4B" that Asmongold discussed previously, are strong supporters of the left. The online communities that these radical feminists use have shown signs of infiltration by spies from China and North Korea. Furthermore, there are approximately 300 radical feminist civic groups suspected of being linked to espionage activities, and these suspicions are widely known among the public but have been left unaddressed. In this situation, Lee Jae-myung, who was the rival candidate in the last presidential election, is refusing to pass the 2025 budget bill due to investigations into his corruption and the political controversies surrounding him. 2. The Right At first glance, it may seem that the right-wing faction is in the right. However, the reality is that they, too, have significant issues with spies. For example, the right-wing party ousted a highly capable leader who had won two consecutive elections, citing allegations of sexual misconduct. Additionally, issues like the First Lady’s controversies, stock manipulation allegations, and various regional corruption scandals have caused significant political turmoil in the last three years. As a result, President Yoon Suk-yeol's approval rating has plummeted to 17%. With his position weakened, President Yoon has decided to invoke martial law under the pretext of dealing with spies. However, the public believes that spies should be dealt with democratically, not through martial law. Many fear this could lead to the rise of another dictator, which has prompted people to take to the streets in protest. Thank You for Your Interest in Korea P.S. There are many spies within South Korean media as well. While American media outlets often cite South Korean reports, they should critically analyze and remove any biased elements. Imagine if your country had two additional major news networks similar to CNN and MSNBC. It would be a nightmare.

thank you for your explanation it seems to make things more sense now. its incredible that people just suddenly jumped to conclusions knowing that traditional media are compulsive liars, like havent we learned the lesson? apparently not. but anyways it seemed very weird to me that the president would just declare martial law because hes a deluded fascist i hate when people come up with these dumb quick answers and more dumb even people followed it like sheep KEKW. For people who don't fully understand what actually happened in Korea yesterday, this incident ironically proved that Korea is a very solid democratic country where it's now impossible for a leader to have a dictatorship. As soon as the president declares martial law, millions of people got furious and running to the street, every media talked about how moron this guy is, and people are now ready to impeach him since yesterday. Hi, another Korean to explain what had happened here. His approval rate is 19%(as of 4th week of November) and that's because 33% of people 60-70 still supports him and 42% of people who are 70+ supports him. In the other age groups, from 18 to 59, his approval rate is 11.10%.(8% to 11% in 10s to 40s group and 15% in 50s age group.) The funny thing is that he actually tried to detain the leaders of both political parties and the Speaker of the National Assembly to prevent the vote to block martial law. However, they happened to be out of their offices when the special forces broke in. What’s even more insane is that the majority (90 out of 108) of the politicians from his political party refused to vote to block martial law, and their absence wasn’t because they weren’t at the parliament. They were at the parliament but left as the vote began, trying to buy time for the soldiers to break in. So, if they had succeeded in detaining the Speaker of the National Assembly or the party leaders, or if people hadn’t gathered around the parliament to block the soldiers from breaking in after martial law was declared, the martial law could have actually proceeded successfully. As ridiculous as it seems, those guys were serious about it, and his supporters, along with some politicians from his party, even officially declared their support for martial law and headed to the parliament through SNS lol.

Problem is in South Korea the left liberals there are very influenced by North Korea and China. That’s not an exaggeration. Foreigners may view this situation negatively, but I would like to explain why I support President Yoon Suk-yeol. During the Korean War, President Truman sent U.S. troops to fight against North Korean communism, with General MacArthur crossing the 38th parallel. At the time, global consensus leaned toward halting the war, especially with China aiding North Korea. From a Korean perspective, countless citizens lost their lives, and many nations sacrificed to defend freedom in Korea. President Syngman Rhee, in those dire times, firmly opposed the withdrawal of U.S. troops without a mutual defense treaty with the United States. He fought against communism, foreseeing the disastrous consequences of allowing it to prevail - a scenario where the free world would inevitably be overrun. At a time when Koreans could barely distinguish between communism and democracy due to their dire circumstances, President Rhee took bold actions, even releasing anti-communist prisoners, to prevent the fall of Korea to communism and to rally global support for freedom. Although he faced heavy criticism domestically, President Rhee tirelessly persuaded others to stand for liberty. Achieving freedom required significant sacrifices. Korea, too, participated in the Vietnam War to oppose communism. Today, Korea is in a crisis. Internationally, the term "martial law" evokes strong, negative connotations, and domestically, it is met with widespread disapproval. However, the 2024 declaration of martial law was likely an extreme measure to confront what the government viewed as anti-state forces within the National Assembly that threatened liberal democracy. While controversial, this action reflects the gravity of the current situation. The opposition party, the Democratic Party, has paralyzed national governance to an unprecedented degree. They have frequently resorted to impeachment proceedings against officials they oppose and have even proposed budgets that allocate zero funds to crucial administrative functions like the Prosecutor’s Office, the Police, and the Presidential Office. The leader of the opposition party has a criminal record with four convictions. In his past, he engaged in deceit, such as impersonating a prosecutor to secure his position as the mayor of Seongnam. As Gyeonggi Province Governor, he was implicated in numerous scandals, and during the 2022 presidential election, he faced accusations of electoral law violations and perjury, which are still under trial. He has already been sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year probation for election law violations. If this is upheld in the Supreme Court, his election will be nullified, and his party will face a fine of 40 billion won for campaign expenses. Despite his current status as a member of the National Assembly, his legal troubles persist. One particularly serious case involves allegations of perjury. Although the first trial resulted in a not guilty verdict, both ruling and opposition parties expect a guilty verdict in the appellate court. Evidence includes recordings that suggest the leader coerced perjury from subordinates while serving as Gyeonggi Governor. Additionally, he is under trial for bribery and corruption linked to development projects during his governorship, with many close associates either convicted or having committed suicide. He denies responsibility despite being the top decision-maker in Gyeonggi Province. The opposition leader is also accused of sending money to North Korea. His associates have already been convicted, but his trials are delayed, likely extending beyond the current president's term. Over two years were spent on the first trial alone due to continuous delays. Despite mounting evidence of deceit, the opposition leader continues to undermine the ruling party and President Yoon's efforts to strengthen South Korea’s trilateral alliance with the U.S. and Japan. He engages in extensive propaganda campaigns, which are deeply concerning. Recently, a Chinese national was caught using drones to capture footage of Korean military bases, sharing the data with foreign authorities. Additionally, spies affiliated with North Korea, disguised as members of civic organizations, were apprehended and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Despite this, the opposition party is blocking critical legislative measures, such as expanding espionage laws to cover foreign agents. The opposition has also initiated 22 impeachments against government officials, including ministers, the prosecutor general, and the head of the Audit Board, effectively crippling the administration. It is crucial for the international community to understand the gravity of South Korea’s current situation. Of course, using martial law as a means to address the situation was a mistake that has led to the current state of affairs, but I hope you can understand the underlying context and interests.

It's hilarious that only American media thought this would turn violent. South Korean police were asking for directions from their superiors, people were protesting peacefully, the parliament was on the people's side. There was no way this would have turned violent for as long as the entirety of South Korea was against the president on this matter. But I guess given recent american goings-on, it is not surprising that they think a coup is happening at the first sign of political distress.

I am Korean and I oppose the martial law that President Yoon is explaining in the video, but I agree with the reason. (It would have been better if it had been translated into English...) Currently, Korea has lost the function of the government because of the leftist opposition party leader who is on trial for various crimes with three previous convictions and the opposition party that has almost a majority due to election fraud. (Perhaps there was preemptive intervention by China and North Korea...) The unilateral cut in the government budget, the investigation of the opposition party leader, and the 22 impeachments of government officials have made the president lose his motivation to govern. I think President Yoon made a final decision for the sake of the country rather than spending the remaining term in a state of inaction.

Is it really a dystopia when the checks and balances work? Does your utopia involve certain people being above the law?

@@puenboy1 Yes, yes it is. JUst because checks and balances works doesn't exclude a society from being a dystopia. Yes, in some types of Utopias there may be people above the law, or not. Those things don't make or break utopia/dystopia

Well if he thinks North Koreans are infiltrating his government, just accusing someone of being a spy makes you sound paranoid, but if you declare martial law then suddenly people have to take the problem seriously. I hadn't even heard of this issue until now

Yes & even the English translations of the alleged “scandals & corruption” involving the presidents wife seem a bit overblown. For example, it says she’s being investigated for being gifted a “Dior pouch” worth $2200.” 😂 Now don’t get me wrong that’s a nice gift but it’s normal birthday/ holiday type gift for a politician’s wife, not something you’d think of as being a huge scandal (like getting a house, plane, millions of dollars in consulting fees like Hunter Biden, etc)
