As a South Korean, The first ridiculous move was that, while I’m not sure about how things work in the U.S., in Korea, martial law can be canceled with a majority vote from both the ruling and opposition parties. Knowing full well that the president's ruling party allies were outnumbered by the opposition, declaring martial law was a foolish act. The second issue was the absurdity of declaring martial law and then immediately going home for the day. Historically, declaring martial law is a highly sensitive issue that stirs up painful memories for our country, and doing so in an inappropriate and unjustified situation was utterly nonsensical. As an ordinary citizen with no interest in politics, even I found these actions outrageous and concerning, leaving a strong impression on people like me who normally don’t pay much attention to political matters. It simply looked like the president throwing a tantrum.
@christopherlane52387 күн бұрын
I hope everything turns out well for you and your country. That being said, normal people SHOULD pay attention to politics. Look what happened in America in our last election. Lost of us decided to not actively take part in the election and we ended up with a lunatic in the White House. I beg you to take an active part in your countries political process.
@타마-w3j7 күн бұрын
@@christopherlane5238 Thank you for your concern. Surprisingly, the martial law declaration was revoked just six hours after it was announced, which was as absurd as the initial declaration itself. Given the ridiculous circumstances under which it was imposed, the outcome was entirely predictable. I hope this incident serves as a wake-up call for young people in South Korea to take an interest in politics, even if just a little.

@@JooDawg The Republic of Korea Army is a national resource and workforce, and as such, it cannot hold any political beliefs. Rather than supporting any particular side, it operates under the government. Since the government is created by the citizens, the military's duty is to protect the country, safeguard citizens' assets, and ensure their safety. Ultimately, both the government and the military belong to the people, and therefore, their support should be for the citizens.

Hi, guys. I'm Korean. President Yoon has become a lame duck following the general elections. He faces significant legislative challenges and is embroiled in various scandals involving his wife. Recently, the national budget was slashed, and he was unable to veto the cuts. In response, he made the shocking decision to press the nuclear button. What is most surprising is that even the Prime Minister of South Korea was unaware that President Yoon was about to declare martial law. This situation has dramatically increased the likelihood of an impeachment motion against him. Furthermore, he now risks being charged with treason for inciting a national rebellion.

The statement reflects a harsh and cynical perspective on South Korean political history, which is marked by a pattern of dramatic downfalls for former presidents. It’s rooted in the historical reality that many South Korean leaders have faced legal troubles, public disgrace, or even tragic ends after leaving office. Here’s why someone might say this: Context of South Korean Political History: 1. Historical Precedent: • Park Chung-hee (assassinated in 1979). • Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo (both imprisoned for corruption and their roles in suppressing democracy). • Roh Moo-hyun (committed suicide after being implicated in a corruption scandal). • Park Geun-hye (impeached and imprisoned for corruption). This pattern creates a perception that leaving office often exposes presidents to severe consequences, whether due to political rivalries, public backlash, or unresolved scandals. 2. Current Political Climate: The suggestion that declaring martial law is a way for the current president (Yoon Suk Yeol) to retain power may reflect fears of a president resorting to authoritarian measures to protect themselves. This could be seen as an attempt to avoid accountability or the potential for retribution after leaving office. Emotional Reaction to the Statement: This statement paints a grim view of leadership in South Korea, and it might evoke a mix of empathy, frustration, and concern: • Empathy: It highlights the immense pressure and risks associated with South Korea’s presidency, where political and public scrutiny can lead to tragic outcomes. • Frustration: It suggests systemic issues in South Korea’s political and judicial systems, which might lack safeguards to ensure fair treatment of former leaders. • Concern: If true, such a dynamic could perpetuate cycles of authoritarianism or extreme political polarization, undermining democratic institutions. Why Someone Would Say This: • Cynicism about Political Power: They might believe that the stakes of losing power in South Korea are so high that leaders will go to extreme lengths to maintain control. • Skepticism of Reform: The statement suggests a lack of faith in South Korea’s ability to address its political culture and protect former leaders from disproportionate consequences. • Historical Observation: It’s also likely an acknowledgment of repeated patterns in South Korean history, which might feel inevitable to an observer familiar with the country’s politics. Overall, the statement is a critical reflection on the challenges of leadership in South Korea, and it underscores the tension between political accountability and the need for stability and fairness in a democratic society.

New information for you guys. President Yoon, when deploying troops to the National Assembly this time, reportedly instructed them to "harm no one and not to carry live ammunition." Upon declaring martial law, the target was not the National Assembly but the National Election Commission (NEC). South Korea's NEC has faced various allegations of misconduct regarding election management, such as negligence in handling ballots and hiring scandals. As soon as martial law was declared, the martial law forces accessed the NEC servers and seized them. There are rumors that they are currently conducting forensic analysis on the server data. In other words, the theory is gaining traction that the assault on the National Assembly was merely a diversion, a camouflage tactic.

This claim is a conspiracy theory made by political KZbinrs that is not true. President Yoon Seok-yeol chose an unreasonable claim for martial law In conclusion, the above comment is wrong and appears to be a comment writer hired by the government. In fact, politicians in South Korea often use comment writing services. Korean citizens do not make this claim at all. The text I wrote may be awkward because it was translated using a translator.

South Korean police were asking for directions from their superiors, people were protesting peacefully, the parliament was on the people's side. There was no way this would have turned violent for as long as the entirety of South Korea was against the president on this matter. I am Korean and I oppose the martial law that President Yoon is explaining in the video, but I agree with the reason. (It would have been better if it had been translated into English...) Currently, Korea has lost the function of the government because of the leftist opposition party leader who is on trial for various crimes with three previous convictions and the opposition party that has almost a majority due to election fraud. (Perhaps there was preemptive intervention by China and North Korea...) The unilateral cut in the government budget, the investigation of the opposition party leader, and the 22 impeachments of government officials have made the president lose his motivation to govern. I think President Yoon made a final decision for the sake of the country rather than spending the remaining term in a state of inaction.

@@tony-xd4bl thanks for sharing this info. It’s interesting because it seems like maybe he did this as a “cry for help” or as we say “pulling the fire alarm” to get the attention of the citizens & rest of the world. My cousin is in US military & stationed in South Korea. This situation definitely shook them up 😂

@@scarletsletter4466 Unfortunately, the media in Korea, like in the US, is almost completely dominated by the left. (Suspected of being bought by North Korea or China...) As a Korean, I see a very dark future for Korea. The US is hopeful because it has a right-wing Trump, but Korea is facing the crisis of a second impeachment of a right-wing president by the left.

@@tony-xd4bl & he just went home after that announcement. Like what??? There should be a real reason for that, because i don't think mr. president is making bad decision (He knew he would lost before announcing his martial law)

My guess is someone in the military was supposed to be loyal to yoon and stop lawmakers from assembling to declare the martial law illegal. That person probably got cold feet or motivated to bot get involved. The lawmakers then were able to meet and everything falls apart from there for yoon.

That is most likely why he declared martial law, a parliament member got their arm broken by law enforcement

Even if the lawmakers werent able to vote, the sight of the military arresting and possibly executing political opponents would not have been passively accepted by the citizens or the US and its allies.

Yes & even the English translations of the alleged “scandals & corruption” involving the presidents wife seem a bit overblown. For example, it says she’s being investigated for being gifted a “Dior pouch” worth $2200.” 😂 Now don’t get me wrong that’s a nice gift but it’s normal birthday/ holiday type gift for a politician’s wife, not something you’d think of as being a huge scandal (like getting a house, plane, millions of dollars in consulting fees like Hunter Biden, etc)
