The fact that this movie manages to be a dark comedy for the first half and a thriller/horror for the second is amazing. It’s almost exactly in the middle in the run time. Highly recommend ‘Memories of Murder’ if you liked this movie

I've seen a few reactions to Parasite, but no one seems to understand how the rich family is also bad. The director said he wanted to show that the parasitic relationship goes both ways. In the first drafts of the movie, he called it 'Decalcomanie'. The rich family does many shitty things that go unnoticed by the other characters and audience alike, and are really subtle IMO. One of the first instances is the rich mom paying the poor boy less but telling him she gave him more. The rich family lives off the labor of poor people and they easily fire staff who have worked with them for years, without confirming any of the alleged wrongdoings. The rich dad tests the poor dad's driving skills but tells him it is not a test. The entire conversation between the dads in the car after the maid's firing, super shitty. The smell thing is the trigger point, but that shows the rich families' discrimination toward the poor. They are oblivious to the fact that the rain ruined the lives of the poor who live in the slums, while the mom says the rain was a blessing that improved air quality. At the kid's party, the rich dad snaps at the poor dad and tells him to do as he says which is why he is compensating him with money. Guests and the poor girl are dying, but the dad, instead of aiding the wounded, yells for the car keys and is bothered by the smell when retrieving them. These are some of the things i noticed.

Also also, - spoilers I guess - but at the end of the movie, the soundtrack is a song about how "Kevin" is never going to be able to make the kind of money he would need. It would take him 400+ years to work his way up to that kind of money. "Jessica" was the only one that had a chance, since she was very smart, talented and ruthless, and the movie foreshadows a lot that Jessica is the only one who "belongs" in this kind of house. With Jessica gone, the family has no chance.

While I understand your hatred towards the family, they’re certainly lacking a bit in morals but I think the idea that people in poverty can even get to a point of earning enough money to buy a whole mansion isn’t realistic. The director himself said that it would take 100s of years for the son to earn enough money (the right way) to buy the mansion. People who are wealthy are often born wealthy or steal from the middle class on their way to the top, I thought it was entirely fair that this family in poverty found a way for their family to get even an ounce of the wealth the rich family had

yes you’re supposed to empathize with the main family lmao there is a south korean satirical phrase called “Hell Joseon” which just means that living in Hell would be equal to living in modern South Korea due to the huge socioeconomic gap between the wealthy and the poor. not to mention the high rates of youth unemployment, high demands of higher education, crisis of home affordability. so with that information you kinda understand why the family did what they did lol. also “fun” fact: it would’ve took the son approximately 564 years to purchase the house he was looking at near the end of the film. p.s.s. and yeah the rich family isn’t your stereotypical evil but they constantly didn’t see their lower class employees as equals Mary 😭💀
@JokerCrowe
@JokerCrowe 2 ай бұрын
The director Bong Joob Ho described it as "a comedy without clowns and a tragedy without villains", which I think is very apt. Also, did you know that they built the house specifically for the shoot? Bong thought that the house should be its own character.

I find amazing how almost no one talks about the contrasting lives of the Kim and Park families symbolize the gulf between social classes. The film’s message lies in its exploration of inequality, exploitation, and the desperation for survival. The rain serves as a powerful symbol, a blessing for the wealthy Park family and a curse for the impoverished Kim family.

Fantastic movie. I remember watching 1917 and PARASITE in back-to-back days when it released in the cinemas back in December 2019. These were the last 2 films I saw in the cinemas before the pandemic. Given that 1917 was winning all of the Picture/Director awards at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs, my jaw legitimately dropped to the floor when Bong Joon-ho won the Director Oscar for this (and the film for Best Picture) since I didn't expect it, but it was so well deserved!

At the Oscars it won Best Picture (first non-English language film ever to win), Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Film. This film was also a huge box office success outside of S. Korea as well. Bong Joon-ho was the talk of the town back in 2019. Great reaction Mary! Inspired by your openness to popular movies in other countries, I decided to challenge myself to come up with a list of great movies from different countries in said country's language. I also remember that the first reactions that I ever saw from you were back when you did the tv show Dark and at various times tested yourself in German. It was all very lovely and there are definitely way too few non-English movies being reacted to! So here we go. My only rule is that it will only be movies that I've actually seen myself and unfortunately that will result in a couple of almost impossible choices for youtube, but if a country had many candidates I tried to weigh in YT-possibility as well as going for stuff that at least some people will have seen or movies that have been very acclaimed (home country and elsewhere), but mostly I just tried picking great movies, but also movies not reacted to all the time. If ever. The List: China (Hong Kong) In the Mood for Love (2000) (one of the greatest film love stories ever that everyone loves. Incredibly beautiful film. Both picture and sound.) Czech Kolya (1996) (heartwarming story that won Oscar) Denmark The Celebration/Festen (1998) (Druk from the same director starring Mads Mikkelsen is recently widely beloved but this is the acclaimed Dogma95 masterpiece. For dark Danish humor maybe very hesitantly try In China they eat Dogs or Klovn the Movie but I'm really not sure Mary could make it through that one) France Raw (2016) (choosing one French movie is almost impossible but I'm just going by what I would like to see reacted to the most and personal favorites. Recent Cannes winner Titane from the same director I like even more, but maybe it's too impossible. I will also mention Cache (Hidden) from Haneke just because it's annoying that there are no Haneke reactions on YT apart from Funny Games) Germany Toni Erdmann (2016) (This movie must be reacted to! It's so original and amazing. Everyone who has seen it are blown away. It has an out of this world performance from Sandra Hüller who is now more famous because of Anatomy of a Fall) Greece Dogtooth (2009) (Yorgos (Poor Things) breakthrough movie and maybe it's impossible for youtube but unfortunately I have not seen a lot of Greek movies.) Ireland In the Name of the Father (1993) (Great Daniel Day Lewis performance. I have not seen it reacted to. They do of course speak English.) Italy I am Love (2009) (Very beautiful and stylish Luca Guadagnino (Call me by your Name) family drama) Japan Our Little Sister (2015) (Didn't want to pick an anime or very old movie. There is also the more famous Shoplifters. Touching movie!) Romania 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days (2007) (won all the awards. Grim difficult drama that's kind of hard to imagine being reacted to on YT but ultimately everyone loves it.) South Korea Burning (2018) (Very intriguing movie with some great performances. Quite popular!) Spain Thesis (1996) (From the same director as The Others and this is even better thriller/horror! Not well known outside of Spain where it was quite the sensation but it deserves to be and I'd think a great reaction-movie.) Sweden Force Majeure (Turist) (2014) (Seeing Mary react to this would be so great. Part cringe comedy, part relationship couple-drama. Very entertaining!) Turkey Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011) (It seems impossible anyone will ever react to this. It's very long and at times quite slow but a masterpiece it truly is and ultimately very rewarding.) The former Yugoslavia Underground (1995) (Cannes winner and speaking of impossible... mostly because of length and it can be tough to follow without some pre-knowledge, but hey maybe it will make one fascinated and wanting to learn. A wildly entertaining and original masterpiece.) Keep doing great!

50:22 They were good, yes but no, if you see they have subtle demeaning actions towards the poor people, They are gentle but not entirely good, and youcan see that in the last part, the sister was stabbed and the man wanted the keys only to get his son to ER, he never cared for the onther injured person even though they seemed to care before. they were nice but not entirely good So, in the end you can take it 2 ways, the kid did got better, got a job, graduated university or bought the house, but remember he was hit with a rock in his head and got permanent damaged, so maybe the outcome we saw was just in his head and his father was convicted or something

love this movie, and how he is floaded with class society simbolism, its a harsh critic on neoliberalism advance on south korea and how its geting harder and harder to get jobs, neolib its a boom of third party companies to intermediate hiring and elitizing even the most servitude jobs, so that is crushing middle class to lose everything and getting even more poor, at the same time as its cheapens and demands more from the workers in the serving of the dominant class, and of course that could only lead up to conflict, criminality and increase of inequality, the fortune rock represents the meritocracy, its a hollow promise (the rock its literally hollow on the inside, it floats in the water) and its the elite's tool that makes the working class fight each other instead of uniting, its the individualism ideology that will maintain the upper classing parasiting on the work of the working class.

At the time this film was made, the age of consent in South Korea was *13.* They changed it to 20 in 2020. As for the movie, where the Kim family messed up was they got so greedy and complacent that they killed the host off of which they were leaching. They were fools to hold a party in the house. Mr. Kim, knowing that Dong Ik smelled the smell and disliked it, should have put in the effort to wash it away or conceal it. Most importantly, there is no reason why they couldn't share with the former housekeeper; it's as though the Kims forgot that they were not the owners of the place and, given their own conduct, would have had a rough time in court, and therefore should have found the most unconfrontational way to resolver it. It wasn't as though the Park family wasn't rich enough for all of them to leech off of.
